What do I need to make an mpg movie workable on a tv dvd player other than a dvd burner obviously?

Why not try DivxtoDVD to be able to change format and then able to burn to dvd-+r disk.

I downloaded DivxtoDVD and tried to use it but I get a message that says "Available disc free 0 b. - Required disc free 1.8 Gb. - increase free space on destination" I put my dvd burner as the destination. What am I doing wrong?

Make a folder for the output file to goto, afterwards you can burn it using your choice of burn engine. U do not have to use the dvd burn engine it supplies. U can use: Nero, Dvd Decrypter or other ISO burners.
Is the dvd+/- r your using an empty disk?

Yes the disc was an empty disk. It's a dvd+r.
