rar. files ??

Some of the program files i would like seem only available in rar file format as opposed to a zip file.How do i open a rar file?When i click on it post download i get the "windows cannot open....etc"
Do i need an extra software file to help it run?
I am a p2p newbie

The easiest software i found to extract zip and .rar files is called ExtractNow. Free and unlimited usage. Do a search.

I was also looking for a .rar extract program like winrar, not free, so I went to http://www.extractnow.com/ and now I have an rar extract program for free.
