Playing and copying files on networked computers

Recently installed newest version of L/W and am impressed. Only problem is that I can't seem to get files I successfully downloaded on one computer on our home network to play on other networked computers, nor can I copy files from one computer to another. I enabled the compatability option in the sharing function. Files will open in MMJB for example, and the file will be listed, but it won't play. When I try to copy I get a "check to see if file is write-protected" message. Any suggestions?

If Limewire is still open on the computer you use to download. the files are locked cause limewire is sharing them out

of you close limewire to copy the files that should solve your problems

Playing files on networked computers

Your posts are as close as I can find to my problem:

I have a directory with many songs downloaded using a prior platform (KLite) on my laptop upstairs.

I have a desktop downstairs that can access these files via a wireless D-Link router. I use WinAmp. All works fine.

I wanted to try LimeWire for better search results.

I installed LW on the laptop. I made the dir where all of the previous files are the "saving" and "sharing" directory.

I have downloaded three songs. They work fine on the laptop using either Winamp or WMP.

Downstairs however, the Limewire files DO NOT WORK. Winamp gives me some flashing garbage, and WMP gives me an error message (i.e. file in use).

The original files appear in the same directory and still work fine so I know it is not Winamp.

I made sure that LW was closed out on the laptop upstairs (per your suggestion this thread): didn't help.

I also tried to copy the file to the downstairs computer and got the same results (garbage, and error message).

The kicker: I emailed the file to myself from the upstairs laptop, opened it downstairs and saved it to my desktop. And it played fine.

Obviously I do not want to have to do this just to listen to a LW file downstairs. I'd also like to keep all of the files in just one place.

Any help as to why just the LW files do not work?
Thanks.

Hi everyone. Ok I discovered LimeWire around...ooh 3 months ago:eek:

Im having a party on July 1st and instead of having cd's playing, I want to play music from LimeWire. Heres what I need to know: Ive downloaded a load of music...well, about 25 songs at the moment. Is there somewhere I can save them so its like a CD and then start downloading again? So I can have dance music, slow stuff etc.......;)

You could make playlists. The LW player isn't the best but if you want to use it
Playlists

Saving playlists

You might want to make something else your default player though & create playlists within that player.

iTunes generally works well with sharing on other computers. And as birdy suggested, you can create playlists to suit your playing needs.
