Benyo14,
You really should take LOTR's advice & go see Norbie
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=55862

Even if you are convinced that it's not a virus (bet it is:)), he will be able to help you to fix whatever is stuffing up your computer. We don't send people to Norbie for personal gain... all his help's free. It's rather because he knows what he's doing & sees these problems every day.

Bobby Naini

I am getting the same thing but was not able to follow your directions. Here is what is going on with my system (P4 1.2, 700+ MB memory, win XP fully updated).

As you said Task mang. would not run with the normal key strokes.

I could not find system32 in the win dir, it wasn't there. I did a search for taskmrg.exe and found it and put it on my desktop.

I ran it and found cpu usage to be at most 11%.

I looked for winupdates.exe and did not see it.

I was able to uninstall LW and of course it no longet starts every few sec. or when I open some programs ......but I get a java error message telling me it can't start so it's still there just the program is not there to run.

Have you any help for me to get rid of the POS?

Thanks,

Steve:mad:

Bobby Naini hasn't posted on this forum since June last year. That's 10 months ago. Go to Norbie's site to get him to help you sort it out. Follow his directions carefully; NorbiesWorld (click on link)

Lord of the Rings,

Thanks for the advice but for most of us this is not a config. issue.

Thanks L of theR

Thanks, I'll go there.

File won't delete!

O.k. I followed all the steps given for deleting the bug (my file name was winupdates as well). Thanks so much for posting the instructions on deleting the stupid virus! Saved my computer! But i'm still having a little problem because there is one file in my registry editor that will not delete. The file name is just (Default) it is a REG_SZ file type and it says the data value is not set. When i hit delete it says unable to delete all specified values. Any ideas?? Thanks

whau April 17th, 2006 05:35 PM

wonderful

all of my friends have downloaded limewire and always said how they never had problems with it so i downloaded it...what a mistake. but after following these step's i removed anything that looked suspicious and now im a happy man!

what if...

what happens when you uninstall limewire, but a notice keeps popping up that says copy report at the bottom. it has a bunch of descriptive errors and such in the document. i shut it all down and when i came on today, i tried to open up Word, and it froze. word has been doing that ever since i got limewire. what the heck is happening?

I believe this virus is a little file that you can download by mistake that is around 800 kb in size. I was searching for things and i downloaded a file of that size. There were like 50 of them, all the same exact size with different file names. I downloaded one thinking it was legitimate but it just had a short movie of a girl dancing in front of her webcam. Then all of a sudden all this stuff occured. I'm assuming this movie and the virus are connected. By the way, NONE of the file names everyone listed here are in my task manager's process tab. I only got to page 6 so far though so maybe I'm mistaken, but I know its the same virus because I had the same exact problem as the topic creator.

Bladecutter May 27th, 2006 08:01 AM

Oh, by the way, sorry for the doublepost but yeah, I'm using that one guy's fix where you rename your limewire folder and download Windows Anti Spyware or whatever the name was. I don't care if it slows down my computer a little, I'm used to it, and I can live with not having the task manager come up with Ctrl + Alt + Delete. So far limewire has not popped up again, but of course the Task Manager doesn't come up. But since I have it on my desktop I can get it when I need it. But this virus ticked me off and I will take great pleasure in dismembering it piece by piece myself. I hope the limewire staff purges this virus from the searches forever. :)

can some one please please help me

 I downloaded lime wire and the player on it will not play my downloads when it does play it sounds as if its jumping and freezing all of the songs are doing it.Iv tryed uninstalling it and re installing it and nothing its still the same. :(

Lord of the Rings May 27th, 2006 11:14 AM

LW's media player can sometimes have that problem if LW is very busy downlding, etc. So what you can do is go to LW's menu bar, Tools>Options>Player & uncheck the option to use LW's media player. I'm not sure if you need to restart LW, but after that your default audio player will play them instead.

BTW this thread topic is about viruses. Your topic is different. :D ;) But the thread title does seem to justify your posting here. :)

Who said anything about config. I said to go see Norbie because he is an expert at helping people eliminate viruses & get their system back in order thereafter. There's no one answer to all virus problems.

you think you got it bad, i hit NINETY THOUSAND!
all were in some volume thingy. idk what they were but deleting them sure fixed everything. this program rocks!~ thanks grandpa

lime6 June 30th, 2006 08:18 PM

PROBLEM: the limewire virus corrupted my system so badly that it hangs / freezes every minute and it destroyed my firewall as well. volume control is disabled and internet access is forbidden..limewire keeps popping up and advertistments are getting on my nerves.

SOLUTION: My advice would be to uninstall limewire completely and delete any files with associations to limewire, then download trial files of ewido anti-spyware or etrust antivirus program and do a complete system scan. delete any files that are infected. i did that and i went to http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk and now everything's fixed! it feels so nice to see all the firewalls, updates and virus protection turned on at your security centre (: if you're experiencing the same problem, sign up at norbiesworld and go to "free computer help" =D

lime6, glad that you went to Norbie, he's good:D

I'd have to say that prevention is better than cure though... everybody should make sure that they have a good AV program (no excuse not to as there are very reliable free ones!), keep it updated and scan downloaded files before opening!!!!

However..

all is quite fine right now ;) however my computer still hangs / freezes at times. any suggestions??

lime6 July 1st, 2006 09:09 PM

andokris, perhaps you could try deleting any files with associations with limewire. have you uninstalled limewire? but anyways, try norbie's world ;)

birdy July 1st, 2006 09:43 PM

lime6, is your comp hanging/freezing at any particular time (eg when downloading, while loading LW)? Does it only hang when you've got LW open?

What version of LW & Java are you using? Sometimes, updating your Java will help. Use the offline installer here
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

You can also try switching off ultrapeer capabilities (tools > options > speed. Tick 'disable u/p capabilities' & apply). Also, reducing your upload & download bandwidth a bit might help. There's a good guide for optimising LW here, tells you how your bandwidth settings should be for best performance
Configuring LW for best performance
Try reducing the number of simultaneous downloads too, see if that makes a difference:)

lime6 July 1st, 2006 10:27 PM

hmmm i dont think it hangs/freezes at a particular time. it's just totally random to me. now it's working completely fine, and hopefully it won't do that again ;) but i'll try your links. thanks for your help ;)

lime6 July 1st, 2006 10:30 PM

and i've already totally uninstalled limewire from my computer so now it doesn't make much difference :P

amjad July 26th, 2006 06:52 PM

My LW keeps popping up too, but when I went to my task manager to check for the virus like you said too, I didn't have any programs taking up my CPU usage. Any other ideas?

mannyman789 July 30th, 2006 05:02 PM

i have found a way to do this shorter. first, copy and paste taskmgr.exe and open it. then in your applications tab, there should be a installer app. uninstall this and boom you are done.

doug119 August 18th, 2006 05:57 PM

omg!

I suspect that based on your descriptions of the problem (which I had as well), you are infected with a virus. It's unbelievable that none of my AntiVirus packages picked up this infection.

For me, everytime I restarted my computer, Limewire would automatically load up. Even if I closed it, it would just open back up again. On top of this, I could not even access the Task Manager in Windows XP to allow me to force a shutdown of Limewire. I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and nothing would happen.

Anyways, here are the steps that need to be taken.

1) Uninstall Limewire. You can reinstall it at the end of these steps.

2) Disable System Restore in Windows. This can be done by right clicking on My Computer, selecting Properties, and then clicking on the System Restore tab. Then check the box Turn Off System Restore. Hit Apply, and then OK. If you are prompted to restart Windows, do so.

3) Now we need to fool the virus into allowing us to open the Task Manager. This can be done by copying the Task Manager executable file from the Windows directory. To do this, go to c:\windows\system32, select the file taskmgr.exe, right click on it, and select Copy. Go to the desktop, and click on an empty part of the desktop. Then right click on the desktop, and select Paste.

4) Double click on the taskmgr.exe file on your desktop. This should open the Task Manager. Click on the Performance tab. If you are in fact infected with a virus, you will likely (although not necessarily) see close to 100% CPU usage!! Now click on the Processes tab, followed by clicking twice on the CPU column header. What this does is order the files running on your computer based on the amount of CPU resources they are consuming in real time. If there is a process, other than System Idle Process, that is consuming close to 100% of the CPU, then it is this process (or file) that is infecting your computer. For me, and likely for a lot of you, that file will be winupdates.exe. Don't be tricked. This is not a Microsoft program. It's a virus masking itself as a legitimate file. Please remember the exact name of this process, because you will need it in a later step.

5) Click on this process to highlight it, then click the button End Process. A warning prompt should pop up. Click on Yes.

6) Now that this process is killed, we need to remove any references to it from the Registry. Once again, because this virus is blocking us from opening the Registry Editor, we need to trick the virus by copying the file to the desktop. Follow the same steps as in number 3, except this time, copy the following two files from their respective directories, and paste them on the desktop.

c:\windows\regedit.exe
c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

7) Open regedit from the desktop. In the left window, click on My Computer so that it is highlighted. Now select Edit from the menu, followed by Find. In the Find box, type the name of the process that you ended from the Task Manager. If you recall, mine was winupdates. Do not include the .exe, just winupdates. Then click Find.

8) For the item that it found in the right window, click it to highlight it if it isn't highlighted already, and then right click on it, and select Delete. If a prompt pops up, select Yes or OK to confirm the delete.

9) Now, hit the F3 button once. This will find the next reference to that bad file. Follow step 8 again to delete the reference. Repeat steps 9 and 8 until the editor indicates that there are no more references to this file. Then exit the editor.

10) Finally, click on cmd.exe which you copied to the desktop. It will open the Command Prompt (which looks like DOS). Type the following commands in order, and hit Enter after each line:

cd c:\
cd program files
rd /s /q winupdates

11) Now restart your computer. Reinstall Limewire.

This should hopefully fix your problem.

THIS IS FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DONT SEE WINUPDATES:
you should see installer under applications. end it. now go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and the actual file should be there delete it and it should go away it did for me

eek_limewire August 22nd, 2006 12:39 AM

BitDefender online scanner saved me

Its running right now and found the infection that was INFECTING my computer ahh... its has infected(created zip archives) over 5000 files so far (*EDIT now at 7000 while ive been typing this)

damn thing is called Win32.Worm. VB.DW

the file was actually infected in my newly downloaded Lavasoft personal firewall, I cant belive how many zip archives this thing has created.

I also had no winupdates in the taskmanager

TheComingTwilight September 9th, 2006 01:48 PM

I, too, was unable to find any winupdates.exe in my task manager. The one that uses up the second most amount for me is my Norton Anti Virus (and it also is not always the second, it jumps around from 1 anywhere to 25 and up), and I was wondering, if I end that process, does that mean that my Anti Virus goes away? I dont want to end it if it wont come back. Someone please help me out.

my limewire keeps opening itself up also but i don't seem to have a virus as far as i can see is there anyone who might know why this is happening and what i can do to stop it from opening itself thanks for any help you can offer

birdy September 12th, 2006 11:32 PM

Double check that you don't have LW set to run on system startup (tools > options > advanced > system startup. Untick 'run on system startup' & apply). Just because you can't see a virus, doesn't mean that it's not there.
Please see point 4 in the thread below;)

Limewire exits during downloads

My install of limewire is exiting whenever I click on any file and try to download it, this is really starting to annoy me so I am currently doing a virus scan with Mcafee that was provided by comcast, my isp. Does anyone have any idea what needs to be done to stop this? First some darn annoying program started upon login to my account and now this crap. The program was called wmedia.exe and I found it running in my task manager, ended it then deleted the files associated with it.

I was reading this thread trying to find out how to stop the virus i had that kept starting up LW. so i followed doug119's post by doing...

Which is pretty funny that i just so happend to fix the problem by trying to get revenge.

Well i hope this helps someone out. Thanks for all the postes befor mine, i really appreciate everyone trying to help out.

To fix the limewire keeps popping up / no taskmanager bug do the following

> First remove Limewire(Start>All Programs>Limewire>Uninstall)
> Download "Brute force Uninstaller" to Desktop
>To download http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip
>Right click the "BFU folder" on your desktop, and choose "Extract All"
>Click "next"
>In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
>Click "Browse"
>Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
>Click on "Local Disk (C: ) "
>Click "Make New Folder"
>Type in BFU
>Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".

Then,
>Download Alcra PLUS Remover at this link
>Right click link underneith and select "save target as" Save it in the same folder you made earlier "(c:\BFU)".
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu

>Reboot to "safe mode"
>Go to "My Computer>C:/BFU folder".
>go to "BFU.exe"
>Select "folder icon"(top right)
>click "alcanchorty.bfu"
>Press "Execute" and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
>Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press "OK".
>Press "exit" to terminate the BFU program.
>Reboot into normal windows.

IT'S GONE

It is not absolutely necessary to uninstall Limewire or go into safe mode.It just makes it easier to do with Limewire not popping up all the time

Not sure if I understand the question correctly.

>My Computer
>Local Disc (C: )
>BFU
>BFU.exe (Ball and chain icon)
>"The Brute Force Uninstaller" Will pop up
>Click on the little yellow folder at the top, right of the window
>Double Click Alcanshorty.bfu
>Press Execute

To fix the limewire keeps popping up / no taskmanager bug (Quick Version)

>Create new folder "My Computer>C:>"BFU"
>Download bfu.zip Extract to "BFU"
>Right click Link Select "save target as" save to "BFU"
>Go to "BFU" Then Drag alcanshorty.bfu over BFU.exe then release.

No need to go to Safe mode, or uninstall Limewire.I have done it dozens of times and works perfect without that
