Tigerlily, You can not find your system32 because it is a hidden folder. In the first thread by kc0rkx_finch is mentioned the following: 3)Open My Computer. Select Tools from the menu, followed by Folder Options. Click on the View tab. Make sure that there is a check mark next to the following items: Display the Contents of System Folders Show Hidden Files and Folder 4)Now, make sure there are no checkmarks beside the following: Hide protected Operating System Files. Did you do those steps also? The missing regedit.exe i can not explain but try and search your pc for the file (If you allready didn't do that, that is). For TrendMicro: I don't understand. I have an ADSL connection and installing the files for TrendMicro didn't take all to long. And i completely don't understand the WORM story. Where did you go to to download TrendMicro??? And how did you find out a WORM was attached? grtz |
I recieved some pop ups from MangnetMix.com and from Bitzi.com then after that Limewire opened up 10 times with 10 Limewire icons displayed in my task bar I thought these were safe sites I am doing virus scans and spyware scans couldn't find Winupdate at all any help would be appreciated thank you |

Man I dont know. I followed the instructions on here and still have the popup and VERY SLOW computer problem, so I uninstalled limewire and that java program, I think that java program is the worst thing ever invented. Jeez. Im tired now, but I will take a look at this again over the weekend and let you know what happens. But man, what a hassle, WinMX never did this to me and I used it for a couple years. They should find the *** that attached the worm to this. I guess its a trojan? horse, whatever its still BS. Is there a diff? |
BeerBottleBill, Did you follow the instructions by kc0rckx_finch? That should get rid of the annoying limewire popping up every 10 secs. And by the way, i had something called MsUpdate.exe not WinUpdates.exe so it can have a different name. TigerLily, Try to copy the taskmgr to your desktop if you can't open it normally ( CTRL-ALT-DEL ). Then kill the process that's taking up all the resources (90+%). (That should give you a better performance and thus a faster PC. Then you can continue with the other steps mentioned in this thread.) When the process keeps starting itself up, find the process on your pc and replace/remove it. I had the luck i didn't have such a process but i did have the popupvirus. After replacing the inected files i didn't have the problem anymore. Hope to be of some help. grtz |

Thanks darlin. I followed your instructions and there were no processes taking up that much resources. I already uninstalled limewire and java and all their files and everything seems fine now; except for the missing files I already mentioned. Havent had time to play with that yet though. I am afaid to re-install LW and of having the same problem again. Its really trying my patience, lol. |
Ok I'm a bit confused here, I followed what kc0rckx_finch wrote but: 1. there are no winupdates files in c:\windows\prefetch 2. I still can't open taskmgr with ctrl+alt+del, I opened taskmgr the way kc0rckx_finch said, it worked, the only process taking up the most CPU was System Idle Process so does that mean I have to end it? For some reason I can open regedit normally but not taskmgr 3. limewire still tries to open every few seconds... |
What's up with this??????? I can't beleive I paid for this virus!!! What the F*** was the creater thinking? Sheesh, I tried everything to fix it on this post, but it still keeps popping up. |
dannysummers, if you don't have the winupdate files you may have other files. I had something like msupdate.exe. It may vary so it seems. Use the free virusscan (homecall) from trendmicro.com. It's good and it's free. Then: 1. Uninstall LimeWire and remoev every file containing limewire in it (Search your entire pc for it and remove it without doubt) 2. Locate the virus-files (with trendmicro) and a. Kill them if they are running b. Remove them 3. Reboot 4. Reinstall LimeWire If everything went ok the popping up should be over. If not, post a msg here. :D. hope to be of some help... :S grtz |
I have problems. I can't find anything with Winupdates or MSUpdate in it. Nothing besides System Idle Process takes up any memory. And my Internet Explorer is corrupt. Any help |
Cheathie Your problem from what you described does not sound like the virus they are talking about in this thread. You might want to go to norbies world they can probably help you there. You will have to register there it is a really good site for figuring out computer and virus problems. http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/ |
Thanks. Limewire keeps opening up it's annoying |
I have what appears to be this same virus on my computer but I have a problem. When I get to the step after I have opened the task manager (with the desktop shortcut) I have no processes named winupdates or anything like that. I have a process called kpf4ss.exe that is hogging like 11 K but thats it. I dont know what all of the processes running are (I know a lot of them) but nothing appears to be using anything even close to 100 percent. I have a process called winlogon.exe but it has always been there. You mentioned that not all users will have this 100 percent problem. What do I do if I dont know which process to end? Thanks alot |
I have that exact same problem. The virus is called Worm.win32.VB or something like that. There are many pages with descriptions, but none that tell how to get rid of it. |
I uninstall it after I download what I want. It NEVER FAILS to ***** up my computer. Limewire developers WHERE ARE YOU and why arent you FIXING this on-going problem?? |
The worm just died... I didn't do anything. That's weird |

Have a very close look at "all" the links here: WARNING: Viruses on network you should be aware of! as some of them have something you don't know about yet. Stay away from files below 2 MB is size. Don't get confused between MB & KB. As soon as you do a search, double-click the top of the size coumn of the search results & the largest files will be listed at the top. Any of these above 2 MB in size should be safe; re: virii. |
Hi all. I followed step by step the instructions just starting this thread. Everything is great. My computer is not slow anymore, LM is not poping up, Performance at Task Manager is ok.... even the fan is not runing all the time The only one thing I need to ask is this: There is still a process that makes CPU usage almost up to 100%, and its name is "Proceso inactivo del sistema", Im using winXP in spanish, so it might be SYSTEM INACTIVE PROCESS or something like that..... Is that one normal?? At a begining it seemed to me that this process just took the place of winupdates, but the good behave of my computer makes me to think this is normal. Other history part 1: Thanks to those who are helping us to get rid of this problems. Other history part 2: To those who have not been helped yet... be patient. This is not easy |

yesssssssss.... that's so good to know!!! :D |
here I come with another question: In my shared folder i have around 36 files, some of them are downloaded, some other I decide to put them there to share. In the green box of LW, it shows 169. I think that means I am sharing 169 files. That amount became big while I was having the virus im my PC, now should I delet them?... where are they really located?? |
Scan them with your AV. Are they zip files? If yes, then delete them. Check their sizes & compare them to the sizes listed in the link above. These zips will multiply. |
Quote:
but I dont have that amount of files in the share folder, and then I dont know what files those are, neither where they located are! Is there a way to know it? PD. If there is something that doesnt make a sense, try to get it!, English is not my native lenguage |
Go to your LW Library window. This window shows which folders you're sharing. You can use the Explore button to look at what's in each folder. Go to your LW Library window, select Saved Files folder & press the Explore button. Sample image here: Using Library Explore button to access downld folder (click on link) But that's for the Saved Files folder. You can use the explore button on any of the others. The saved files folder is not itself shared, but the "Shared" folder is. Saved files folder is purely a reference folder within LW to show you what your most recent downlded files are. Sorry if that sounds confusing. BTW if you speak spanish, there's a Español section on the forum: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/forumd...ne=&forumid=79 & backmann is the best person to speak Español with. |
humm... I got to see something extrange in a folder called UPLOADS. There are 170 zip files, I have no idea where they came from, I mean, I have dowload only music no zip files. I will not open them, they will be deleted right away. Right? |
Yes you should delete them asap. Double-check your system over to make sure you don't still have any virus. Do you have these utilities: 1. ad-ware (FREE), & also 2. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE), 3. Keep your AV & firewall active. 4. It might be worth talking to Norbie here http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Downloads/c=2.html |
I am having the same problem that a few users in this thread are. When I get the task manager up, there is no process that is taking up space, and thusly I can't find anything on the Registry Editor. Limewire still pops up and then I get a bagillion files downloaded into my "Complete" folder. Any advice would be appreciated. |
F^%^&%*ing thing... Can't Trick into opening Task Manager!!! Ok, so my daughter caught a slough of malware through a kids game site!!!!--SICK F**KERS, anyway...now i have the limewire bug that keeps popping up (so does Hello, the pic program, though not as much), and I did all i could to get task manager to run from my desktop, but I think this thing has outsmarted that manuver... any help greatly appreciated!!!!!  |
1 Attachment(s) My only question is what if you don't have any files that have the name, "Winupdate(s)" in it. The only one near that file name that I found was swupdtr.exe. Thanks to the list of how to get the virus off that was prepared by kc0rkx_finch , I was able to stop limewire from poping up all the time, and remove all of the zip files that messed up my system. But I still cannot access my Task manager using ctrl+alt+del. Also when I go into my Registry Editior, there are some files that it won't let me delete. I still get a Virus warning from my anti-virus software when I boot up as well though, (AVG-FREE edition). Does anyone have any more ideas that could help me, I will be very much appreciative. Thanks! |
You might want to go to the link below Norbie will be able to help you with the virus. http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Forums...ic/t=1295.html |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks, It's kinda funny, but the virus just up and died a day or two after i posted this reply. Thanks for all of the help! :D |
Ok but others have said that also and it was still there if I was you I think I would make sure. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for the warning, but I was also a little bit unsure of it being gone, until I ran a couple of virus scans, a couple of adware/spyware scans, followed the directions 4 times and couldn't find the said file (from one of my previous posts) after the first deletion of it, and 1 or 2 restarts of my computer I was pretty sure. The fact that limewire doesn't open and close on its own now is my proof enough. Thank you again for your warning, it is good to see that there is some good people out there. |
Im not sure I want to do this. My dad just restored everything on my computer once again without losing it. Everytime i make a different option (on those get rid of the bug instructions) my computer has this popup saying stuff like "are you sure you want to do this? it can make your computer inopperable.": and such.. i dont wanna cause more trouble than this damn computer is already in. .. ill ask my dad to do it.. but PLEASE let me know these instructions have been confermed by the limewire... people and such. :( |
I looked at your other post and that is the only way I have any clue of what you are talking about. You should stick to your original thread if you want help figuring things out. It can become very confusing if you don't. You can go to Norbies World and he will help you to see if you still have the virus the link below will take you there. http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Forums...ic/t=1295.html |
Please help Ok I had a friend telling me about this. And gave me the topic to this. He said the virus has to be activated and I havent activated it yet. Ok first off do I need to delete it before I activate in. Second off can I delete it without activating it. Because it's not poping up. Only when I click On limewire. I don't have xp of a task manager. How can I get rid of it if I have Windows ME. |
If you are talking about a file you have downloaded but havent opend yet then yes just delete it. If you delete it without opening it you will be fine. |
No I have downloaded limewire and have been download stuff like aqua teen(tv episodes) and Antiflag musc videos. My friend told me when you download limewire it gives you a virus when you try to take out the main limewire file. He said it happend to him. He said you just got to activate it. So I went into windows and deleted the limewire file. (Deleted) Then I looked agian and it came back. I want to take precations and find out if it is activated and remove any possible viruses I may get or may already have. I don't see anyone giving support on how to remove the virus for WindowsME. (Note) I have no virus scan. My mcaffe virus scan never picks anything up anyway. |
You Friend is wrong LimeWire does not give you a virus. But some of the files you downloaded may have viruses in them if you downloaded any files that were 851.7kb and opened them then you have a virus. It causes LimeWire to start up by itself every time you try to turn it off it restarts itself. If you have this virus or any other you can click on the link below it will take you to Norbie's website and he will help you get rid of it. http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Forums...ic/t=1295.html A little piece of advice never download anything off of P2P networks without having a up to date antivirus program you are just asking for a virus if you do. The link below is a link you should read and it has links in it to good free antivirus programs and spyware programs. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=41432 |
Ha, but what if he is right. He said it happend to him when he was tampering with the limewire main file. And this is the first thing he sent me to.... Why isn't there any support for Windows ME? |
If you want to believe him go ahead. This is a user forum none of us work for LimeWire. There are literally millions of people using LimeWire. How many people do you think would use it if it caused viruses. I myself have installed and uninstalled LimeWire dozens of times with no viruses. Why don't you think about it for a minute. Most people run XP now days so there are not allot of people running ME. That is why you don't see allot of ME post here. |
OK I got proof now. I friend read what you said and he told me they don't know what there talking about. He is very intellegent and knows what he is talking about. He's about to make a movie step by step how to activate the virus that limewire installed into the computer and I will post it here. Please realize that you all might be at risk. I will post it as soon as he makes it. |
One thing you should realize is before you post it make sure that you or he got your copy of LimeWire from the official source. There are allot of hacked versions of LimeWire out there. LimeWire is a open source program. If you do not know what that means then Goggle it for a more in depth explanation. Basically it means that anybody can get a copy of it then change the program if they wish they can add a virus to it or what ever they want. The Link below will take you to the official site. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml |
Ya thats were me and him got it from. It might take him a while though. He installed limewire. He opend the file to activate it then about 100 diffrent colors started to flash. So he is making a movie how to activate it and remove it. He Got the virus in his system just to prove to me I had it. |

I like many others downloaded LW from an official site, I'm also very security minded, everything and I mean everything is scanned before installation, LW came up very clean! I would suggest that your antivirus prog is either none existent or poorly installed, I also reckon if I was to probe your computer I would find 1000s of holes in your firewall, if indeed you have one, do not blame Limewire for your own ignorance. And if your friend is using Windows ME, then he has a big problem, Windows ME was eventually taken off the market because it had huge security issues NOT because it was superceeded! I would never take advice from anyone that still uses Windows ME, sheesh!! |
not working for me when i get to loading the copy-pasted taskmgr off the desktop it still loads with only the very bottom part of task manager visible. i had nothing in prefectch but i cleared it anyway, limewire is uninstalled. can you help!?! thanks ben |
Go to the site below he can help you get rid of the virus. http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/Forums...ic/t=1295.html |
major problem:( Well I went through all the earlier instructions but I couldn't find any files that were taking up my cpu usage other then the system one. I have the same problems though, Limewire keeps popping up and I can't use task manager by using ctrl + alt + delete. I've went through all these instructions but I can not find a virus or file that is doing this. This is just getting pretty annoying and frustrating. So if anyone has any idea please message me asap or send me an email. It will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
Go to Norbiesworld. There's a link in Grandpa's post above. |
k thankz |
