which codecs

hi there, I,m a newby 2 this forum so please don,t get angry with my stupidity but pc jargon is not my strong point. I,ve been reading through the forum to get some tips and advice to my problem,(not being able to play movies),and came to the conclusion that i need to update my codes(whatever they are) i,ve dwnld Divx create although it is only on 15 day trial, and to my amazement i can now play film but also suggested was to back it up with VLC, however i am unsure what one to dwnld. the one i tried did not have a valid signature so i did,nt run it. Have i done the right thing so far and where do i go from here? I also wasn,t sure as to how many codecs i need any help or suggestions very very welcome
thanks in advance

Here"s a link to a thread about codecs:

I use VLC www.videolan.org/vlc/ and it plays any video I've tried so far and it already has the codecs in it.
And it's free.

DivX codec

If you want to keep the DivX program on your computer without purchasing it go into this site http://www.divx.com/

Download the one that DOESN'T have the converter in it. You probably downloaded the one with the converter in it that's why it's only a 15-day trial. The program without the converter is the one you want and it's FREE!
