I am guessing you were using some of the tools provided in system works. Yeah that is not a good Idea they will remove links and registry items XP needs. I should have guessed that when I read your first post I learned that the hard way when I first got XP. Spy ware Doctor, System Works or any other program that optimizes your computer by removing links or editing the registry will mess up XP. The only thing that I have found that works very well with XP is system restore.
