Well Scottyboi You have a problem explaining your problem, unless you can make it quite clear what your set up is, what software you are using your are going to have a hard time getting any help because any potential helper has to fill in a lot of blanks. For example, I guess that you have the following: Windows XP (You could have 2000, NT, 98 or Millenium) Norton AntiVirus (Norton makes a range of products, including a firewall, System Works, Ghost (Back-Up manager), etc. AVG - I believe this is "free" anti-virus app What is your PC specs, i.e. HD size (including free space), memory, etc. What version of LW are you using? I think you get the picture, you have not supplied enough info. However, saying that, are you using Norton Anti-Virus and AVG at the same time? If so, try switching one off. Also, (I don't know much about routers but) has your router got a built in firewall? Again, if so, switch the inbuilt firewall off. UK Bob |

scottyboi The post from ukbobboy01 is correct allot of people post and do not supply enough info. Also I looked at your post the day you posted it and quite frankly I have never seen this problem before and most of us senior members try not to answer if we do not have a good idea of what might be wrong. With the information you supplied after ukbobboy01 asked I can see that your computer is good enough and should have no problem running LW. Also I see you had no problem with a earlier version of LW but I do not know which version there are allot of other ones. XP 2002 was service pac1, Are you now running service pac2 who knows you do but I don't. If it is 1 windows doesn't have a built in firewall 2 does. Your router has a firewall did you configure it correctly follow the instructions exactly. Your router is not one of the easier ones to configure. The first link will tell you how to set up a static IP address. You must do this first. Do everything here there are 2 pages of steps for setting up the static IP address. http://portforward.com/linksys/wrt54g-dhcp.htm After you have completed the steps above do the steps in the link below. http://portforward.com/linksys/wrt54g-dhcp.htm I do not know if this will correct your problem but it will properly set up your Router. Your problem may be a install problem. I have never seen that message prior to limewire loading and starting up. Please post back and let us know if it works if it doesn't you may have to un install LW and then manually edit your registry. Other members may have some other ideas or may have seen this problem before. But this is the first time I have seen this one. |
I have seen it, but you won't like what I had to do to fix it. I needed to un-install SP2 and reinstall it. Also, I got rid of Norton systemworks, but that caused even more problems, because Norton imbeds itself all over your computer from the registry to other primary windows functions. I'm not sure if the Antivirus does the same. Then, I ended up bringing my computer back to factory install. Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of Nortons anymore. Anyway, my advice would be to at least turn off Norton if you can, or get rid of it. Keep AVG active, then uninstall LW, reinstall SP2, after updating SP2, reinstall LW and allow the program to work thru the firewall. Don't forget to run a virus and spyware scan after un-installing SP2. |
well i uninstalled norton and lm and tryed reinstalling lm put still the same thing i did everything grandpa told me to still no luck and what is sp2???? ps:: service pac1 |
Re: SP2---Service pack 2 Go to http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us and update your computer. SP2 has a firewall, but it is easy to configure. There might be some ofther conflicting software issues that could be solved when your computer getting up to date. |
mtntravler Are you sure you did not have a virus when you saw the problem before because I noticed you said that when you uninstalled Norton it messed up your computer. I have run Norton for many years. I have un installed it and re installed it many times over the years. I currently run Norton on 2 computers and avast on one. 2 of the have both on them but I only enable 1 at a time but I use both to Scan weekly. Any way the only time I have had Norton mess anything up is if a virus got in and corrupted it. There are hackers out there that target Norton since Norton is the most widely used anti virus on the market. If you get a virus that is designed to disable Norton before the virus has been discovered by the anti virus developers it can cause allot of problems. This has happened to me before where I have got a virus before there was a definition for it and it corrupted Norton. The virus corrupted Norton and disabled system restore and inbeded itself in the registry and Norton the only way to get rid of it was to reformat and re install. Which to me is no big deal I do it regularly. scottyboi Service pack 2 was the last Major security update for windows PX. It came out a couple of years ago. If you haven't updated to SP2 you probably should you can download it from Microsoft.com. You may want to un install LimeWire after you un install it look in your program files and delete anything that says LimeWire. Default settings for LW are C:/Program Files/Limewire if there is a limewire folder delete it. Now go to Start/Run and type in regedit in the run box it will open your registry go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and expand it. Go to software and expand it look for the LimeWire file if you find one delete it. Now look for magnet file if you find it delete it. Now close your registry. Do a virus boot scan with Avast when you first install it it will ask if you want to do a boot scan check yes then re boot. The link below will take you there. http://www.avast.com/eng/down_pro.html Now go to the link below and download java and save it to your documents or where ever you save files. Once you have it on your hard drive go to where you saved it and click on it and install it. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html After you install go to LimeWire and get LimeWire save it to your hard drive. Once you have saved it click on it and install it. The Link below will take you to the official site. http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml Once again I do not know that this will work I am guessing you have a bad install but I do not know that for sure. If you do not completely understand the instructions of editing your registry or don't feel comfortable doing it, Then don't do it you can really mess things up if you mess up in the registry. |
i cant get sp2 b/c my computer didnt pass some kind of valification thing but can i get a link to an old versoin plz or is there anyway i can get v 4.9 runing without SP2? |
Grampa- When I used Systemworks on my old computer (Widows 98), it seemed like the only thing that kept 98 from crashing. It seems to be the opposite for me on XP. When it happened the first time, I thought it was just a virus, but it happened five times to me in a matter of two months. The only thing I kept the same on my machine when I formatted it was systemworks 2005(unfortunately paid $89 for it too). I kept up to date religiously, and used it almost daily too(ie. virus scans, windows scans, cleanup, speed disk...) Ever since I decided not to use it on my last format, smooth sailing all the time. :) :D Besides Windows XP has many of the same functions systemworks has. As far as just the stand alone antivirus is concerned, I have no opinion about it except.... If it was viruses causing all of my problems, then it sucks. Scottiboi- The only verification error message that I can think of is a proper windows key. I know someone else who got the same thing when they had a kid build them a computer. Used the same CD to install windows on multiple computers. Not a good thing. If you have done everything else that people have suggested on this thread, I don't know what else to tell you other than- Get a new computer from a respectable source or run the older version that worked. |
mtntravler I am guessing you were using some of the tools provided in system works. Yeah that is not a good Idea they will remove links and registry items XP needs. I should have guessed that when I read your first post I learned that the hard way when I first got XP. Spy ware Doctor, System Works or any other program that optimizes your computer by removing links or editing the registry will mess up XP. The only thing that I have found that works very well with XP is system restore. |
Windows XP & Norton SystemWorks 1 Attachment(s) Hi Guys Grandpa, mtntravler and scottyboi Got a few mysteries to clear up on this interesting thread, the problem is where to start: OK, I have WinXP SP1 with all the latest security updates and I run LW Pro 4.9.29 along with NSW 2004, NIS 2005 and a host of protective software. Grandpa WinXP SP1 one does have a basic (very basic) firewall which, upon installation, is turned off. It may be possible that one of the security updates (if scottiboi installs them) may have turned the XP firewall on, though this is unlikely. I have attached a screen print of the SP1 Firewall Control, Scottiboi you should look to see if the enabling box is ticked then untick it. mtntravler Like Grandpa I use Norton SystemWorks and have found it to be an essential part of my system maintenance, e.g. Speed Disk helps to maximise HD space and keep the files in a contiguous manner. I have also found that, after a long (2 - 3 days) LW session, I have to run Windoctor to sort XP out otherwise XP will not close or restart without crashing. Scottyboi I'm not sure whether you are on a college campus or not but if you are it is possible that your college may have changed it's policy towards P2P use and is using it's firewall to block you (and other students). UK Bob PS. SP2 may be OK for some XP users but at the moment it is not essential to have. |

yeah i have never had that box checked and im still have troble with all this iv updated all i can and i have another key thing for xp b/c it came with the computer but i never saw a use for it b/c xp worked fine so if u know how to change it let me know |
Scottiboy Please press "Post Reply" instead of "Quote". UK Bob |
well im donw with this nothing has worked thank u all for trying im just going to put all my stuff i want to keep on my sisters laptop and reformate my computer |
the reason limewire is doing this is because either your SP2 firewall is blocking limewire (you need to add it to your exceptions list or disable winXP SP2 firewall altogether) or its norton that is disabling access. which i dont know about norton so i cant tell you if thats true or not. |
ultracross scottyboi does not have SP2 his issue is either the SP1 make believe firewall. His router, Maybe Norton Firewall I don't think he has it but his post are not clear, or possibly a bad Windows XP install since he stated it was SP1 and when he tried to DL SP2 the windows verification could not verify his copy of XP. Which means it is most likely a free version of XP in which case re formating and re installing is going to do him no good at all it will still be a corrupt version of XP. And yes scottyboi allot of the free versions of XP will install and operate they just do not operate properly. The first thing I would do is get another copy of XP preferably the paid for version then you will know it is good then reformat and reinstall. This may not solve your problem though because I have no Idea if you properly port forwarded your router. |
oh, my appologies, i read this from him while skimming the thread: "Microsolf windows xp v 2002 service pack" so i thought he meant sp2.. (i wish users werent so vague  ) |
ok yes it was a corrupt but thankfully the good ppl at dell but a windows xp disk in with my sisters laptop and i used that only now i have xp home 2002 sp2 i havent tryed using LM but if it doesnt work ill get back to u Ps REFORMATTING SAVED MY COMPUTER |
Hi scottyboi Just a little suggestion. When updating the drivers, go to the dell website and use the dell drivers you can d/l. It will save you a lot of grief. Dell is proprietary in nature, which I don't like, but if you try and install drivers for your dell installed products from other vendors, the products just don't run correctly. Examples of this are display adapter, chipset, and other such items. |
