Windows stops responding when running Limewire 4.9.28 With version 4.8.somthing i forget and 4.9.28 windows seems to consistantly crash on me. Not a blue screen of death, but rather the screen freezes and the red "working" light stops flashing. A curious point however is that the modem "working" light keeps going. I have nothing to do but hit the reset button <ctrl><alt><delete> does not work. Any suggestions? I have add-aware and AVG free edition both come up clean. I have re-installed windows (i have XP Home) nothing seems to remove the problem i dont want to stop using Limewire so any help would be apprieated. (This problem also happened on the beta) very confusing indeed. Please Help. - Jonathan2133 *Edit* *Edited again* Please if you have this problem reply and outline the following: 1. Version of Limewire 2. Version of windows (pro and home are different. If you dont know then go stert>run>winver it should pop up 3. Any other information that may be useful - processor speed, time before problem started, attempts at fixing the problem, etc. 4. Grafic card and driver version if you have it 5. Buddy I got the exact same problem. I tried reinstalling J2SE update 4 again and updated to the new ver 4.9.29 limewire and the thing still crashes everytime I open it. I want to fix it but at the same time don't want to reinstall and lose all my files. -Mouze |
mouze i feel your pain Glad (sorta) to hear this is not only my problem. Firstly if anyone else has this problem please list specifics as to operating system, versions, solutions and failures, etc. I will keep an eye on this as long as it is active. Secondly, Most other instances of this problem or similar problems have had the grafic driver or java version to blame. I know that some of the issues have been fixed with the new version of Limewire, but there could be more issues who knows. I have a redion 9600 pro and dont know what driver, but it seems to make sense as soon as i started updating it screwed up. most solutions for other cards said roll back the driver. Thirdly (and probably lastly for now) I hope the creators of Lime Wire can take note and try to fix this problem. Please fix this! Thanks for your hard work in the program hope 4.9.30 is problem free! Input is welcome! - Jonathan2133 |
Can those infected with the problem do me a favour...Install AVAST! antivirus software and do a On Boot Scan..See if u can solve the problem... The link ... And by the way...The virus scanner is free...;) |
I do not believe it is a virus problem but rather a system problem, however i will try this bot scanner. Who knows, maybe i will need to come back and eat my words :) Any more help would be greatly apprieated. - Jonathan2133 |
1 Attachment(s) A little more Info is needed you have a start but it is still pretty vague. O/S windows 98/2000/XP Ram 256/512/1gig Hard Drive space free Video card Radion 9800/Nvidia/Intel on board LimeWire Version Java Version Connection Type and speed Are you using a router Firewall or walls Anti Virus A good description of your problem. Open Task Manager by holding down Ctrl+Alt then push delete see what is running and how much memory and cpu each program is running especially LimeWire. |
Same problem. Tried reinstalling. Run weekly virus scans, and bi-weekly spyware scans (Adaware, Spybot). OS = MSWindowsXPHome RAM = 1 gig Processor = Pentium 4 3.4g Video Card = NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Limewire version = 4.9.30 Java version = Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 1.5.0_04-b05 Connection = 100kbps Intel 537EP V9x DFV PCI Modem Router = Broadcom Nextreme 57xx Gigabit Controller Firewall = Windows firewall Anti-virus = Norton 2004 Limewire was working fine. Then one day it started crashing my computer. Less than a minute (but not immediately) after Limewire starts everything freezes up and you can't open the task manager. You have to turn of the power to restart. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Including any other decent file sharing software (not KazaaLite, Soulseek or Bittorrent). |
Check out the link below if any of you do not fall into that category please post back. These types of problems can be very hard to figure out. Please read the whole thread. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=45184 |
I'm having exactly the same problem, but with LimeWire 4.9.30 and it was consuming like 112 MB of my memory. |
In my case I do not get the "blue screen of death", Limewire simply causes my PC to freeze within a minute of it starting up. My version of Windows is completely ligit. The problem started seemingly out of nowhere. One day it worked, the next it started doing this. I made no major changes to my PC between the time it worked, till the time the problem first manifested itself. Help would be greatly appreciated. |
Butters86 Try downloading LimeWire to your hard drive do not install it over the net. When the download screen appears click on save and save it to my documents or where ever you want. Then do the same with Java. Then manually install them by clicking on them and follow the instructions. Install Java first. Make sure you uninstall your existing Java and Limewire first. There is a link to java in the first thread choose which ever version you want. The second link is to the official LW site. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420 http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml |
I tried deleting Limewire and Java then reinstalling them again. Same thing occurs. I kept Task Manager open while I attempted to run the program. Limewire never took up more than 50mb of memory before and up to the crash. After the crash the blue screen of death eventually did appear. The error message was: KERNAL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR. With technical details reading: *** STOP: 0x00000077 (0xC00000B5, 0xC00000B5, 0x00000000, 0x02131000) |
It sounds like a windows problem you might want to check out the links below. The third link is windows support. http://forums.pcworld.co.nz/showthread.php?t=60913 http://www.hardware-one.org/new-1669826-4534.html http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? |
Thanks for the help. i am currently in the process of trying the links. Im still thinking its a grafix card problem but at this point its too early to say. As always, keep sending that input and providing as much help as possable. As far as knowing how much of my cpu the thing is using at time of crash, its never very much so i know im not maxing out anything. good suggestion tho. - Jonathan2133 |
My problem seems to be resolved. I doubt this could be of any help to anyone but I'll tell you how it happened anyways. I realized that I HAD made one change to my computer around the time when Limewire started crashing everything. I installed the game Baldur's Gate 2. I decided to delete the game from my computer in the pathetic hope that it would somehow miraculously solve my problem with Limewire. It did. Don't ask me how. Perhaps the geekyness of Baldur's Gate 2 conflicted with the coolness of the indie rock songs I was downloading with Limewire. More likely the computer gods chose to have mercy on me. Whatever the case, maybe somehow this story could prove useful in figuring out this problem. Limewire works again for me. There was a little slowness at the beginning which scared me but since then, no problems. Good luck to anyone dealing with this problem. And no Baldur's Gate 2 for you. |
I have the same problem, if I start up limewire, I have to leave it totally alone or my computer freezes up. So if I try to read my e-mail, preview a file, or play a game, my comp instantly freezes. However, I'm curious as to whats causing it, since my comp seems to randomly freeze up every few hours whether or not I'm using limewire. Its only the extreme reproducability of limewire that led me to these forums. I'm planning to reformat very soon, but hearing that reinstalling windows didn't fix the problem for many is very discouraging. pentium 4 3.0ghz w/ radeon 9800 pro running Windows XP Pro w/ service pack 2 This has been happening for a couple months now. The only thing I changed was my mouse, and I have tried uninstalling and reverting back to an old mouse and it will still freeze consistantly. |
Random freez ups are usually windows problems, Usually drivers, missing dll, not enough memory, missing or misdirected file path, Corrup version of opperating system, The last seems to be the most popular with people who use p2p, Some how they get a free version of there OS and it is corrupt 50% of the time or more. The best cure for that is get a paid for version. |
Actually, I bought mine...from a microsoft employee for 35 bucks when it was brand new :D. I've also run a memory test and it comes up clean. Could it be just a coincidence that it freezes 100x more often when I run limewire? Either way, doesn't look like I can do much other than reformat. |
LimeWire is a fairly memory intinsive program and like most java programs requires quite a bit of resorces to opperate if there is a weak link in your OS it will probally show up when running LW. If it were me I would reformat but I reformat about every 4 months anyway. It keeps my machine at top preformance. I do allot of benhmark testing and you would be suprised how much your preformance drops with time. |
Limewire doesn't work again. Oh well. I guess it was too good to be true that it would just simply start working again out of the blue (like it simply stopped working out of the blue). My computer never crashes for any other reason except for running Limewire. I do not experience any random crashes as others in this thread have reported. My version of Windows is completely ligit. I've tried running Limewire with nothing else running and it still fails. I've tried running it Windows 2000 compatible, no dice. I've tried deleting my .limewire folder, doesn't change squat. I have experienced a new error message since my last post though: The instruction at "0x0103419b" referenced memory at "0x0103419b". The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of "0x00000b5". After which it asks to either terminate the program or debug. If you don't terminate after a few minutes, the blue screen of death appears. If you terminate the following message comes up: c:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe terminated unexpectedly with status code - 1073741818. The system will now shut-down. After which it performs a normal restart. Again any help would be greatly appreciated. I find the prospect of reformatting a little hard to swallow since a)it didn't seem to work for others, b)my problem only manifests itself with Limewire and c)my PC is under 2 months old. |
I did a little search for the error code you supplied looks like you better do another virus scan that error is likely caused by a Virus. Good Luck. The link below will take you to the search page I suggest you do some reading and fix your computer. It is not LimeWire's Fault after you fix it you might want to get a good AV. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search |
Just a little extra information when you removed the virus before if some viruses are not removed properly some .dll and other system components your OS needs to operate properly can be removed. If this happened in your last attempt to remove a virus you are going to have to re install XP. |
Oh Well So far none of the suggestions has helped me. I finally decided to uninstall Limewire and try bearshare, but the same problem, random lockups. That and bearshare is pretty lousy for search results. Oh well. I ended up getting so fed up i uninstalled limewire and bearshare and im running clean, no lockups or anything. Very odd indeed. Grandpa thanks for your help and the link to that ram tester was awsome i use that tool a bunch (I hope this credit is going to the right person) so thanks an keep up the suggestions. FYI i am using an original copy of windows xp home, but i know what you mean about people who use hacked operating systems they are more problems than they are worth. |
jonathan2133 Before this problem started did you do any system repairs with any programs like System Doctor that searches for windows errors and removes them. |
Yeah its bull crap that we paid for this service and all we get ofr help is we have to buy the more expensive version, or we can come here and be told that our computers are the problem. so does this mean if i buy the Pro version i'm still going to have this problem? well i have had to uninstall Lime wire after: 1. i first uninstalled java due to that was my error creator, reinstalled Java. ( did not work, same error ) 2. uninstalled all of limne wire including Java. ( did not work, smae errors ) 3. reformatted reinstalled a Licensed version of Windows Xp Pro. Yes i got all the updates first. made sure i had my virus scanner installed before i connected to the internet. installed Limewire, i bought a year subscription. ( did not work same errors ) 4. bought a new video card Nvidia GeForce 6600GT installed 1 gig of ram upped my processor to 2.4ghz, formatted all hard drives, ( Low lvl format ) so as not to leave any residual information. then installed my LICENSED version of windows XP pro, got all my updates, all the crap that you do before you do anything else, made sue everything was running correctly, ran all tests sugested, and still Lime wire produces the same errors. Now you wanna tell me its still my computer? Its your friggin program!! I paid for this service, and now i would like an answer or some kind of responce other then my computer is the problem. because we all know now its not our computers. not all of our computers are the same, none of them are connected other then your program so if its a virus its your program spreading it. You need to get ont eh ball and figure this out , due to its been a whole month now i have paid for a service i cannot use. i wnat my money back, or i would like to get a service im paying for. your choice. |
Viyking I do not see where I have or any body else has answered any of your post I do not know what service you paid for there is no LimeWire service. LimeWire basic is free and LimeWire Pro is $18.88 for Pro and 6 months of upgrades. So I have no idea of what you are talking about. I have a feeling you got LimeWire from a scam site and have been scammed. And if you did it is possible you have a corrupt version of LimeWire. I would suggest you calm down and do a little investigating. The first link below is a link to a post about scam sites. Allot of people have been scammed by these sites. The second link is to the official LimeWire site. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=28751 http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml By the way we are volunteers here we do not work for LimeWire |
I do appologize. I in fact was had. I went to the Limewire.com site and was somehow redirected to mymusicinc.com which infact is a scam site. I am in the process of getting a full refund along with purchasing my lime wire pro. thank you. Again i am very sorry for snapping off. Thank you for you help. Viyking |
No Problem, I hope you can get your money back. If you have any problem with LW let us know we will try to help you out. There may be some problems left over from the other version you got. It would be best to get rid of any traces of the previous version before installing the new one. Thanks for the apology. By the way sounds like you have a pretty good system nice video card. Im guessing a AMD 3200+ overclocked or a 3400+ |
yeah i tried the new version, but i am getting the same 100% CPU usage along with some kind of graphical issue. when LW comes up im looking at a white box, and all the tabs are 5x there normal size and across the bottom of the screen. Since there is 100% usage it takes about 5-6 minutes to finally get my mouse to move over to the minimize which will stop the 100% usage instantly, or to just shut down LW. but i am unable to look at the main window or click on anything. very freaky. this was the same error i had with other versions also. I tried reading in other parts of the forum where people had the same issue but there were no answers there and no real discription of what the problem was. if i hit Ctrl alt delete i see that it is using resources like it should, but the CPU usage goes immediatly to 100% which is not supposed to happen. |
The link below should help on the graphic issue. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=39600 |
THat worked. the answer to the graphic problem, is you need to get the old version of Java 1.4.2 and you need to make sure if you have a high end gaming card that you set Anti Ailiasing to 4x and not 8x. this puts LW working beautifuly. Thanks for the help. Viyking |
Thanks for letting us know |
Just thought I'd let anyone trying to figure this problem out that my Limewire is now working again (and has been for a solid week now). My PC had no viruses on it. I had Norton 2005 and had been performing weekly scans that came up with nothing. I removed Norton and switched to Nod32 to see if that would find any viruses. It didn't, but when I tried to run Limewire after making the antivirus switch, it worked. Possibly a conflict between Norton 2005 and Limewire was the cause? I don't know. All I know is that my Limewire is now working. Thanks for the help! : ) |
Yeah i still get the graphical issue if i try to open windows media player with LW. so instead of trying to figure it out anymore, i just don't open Windows Media with LW and everything is fine. Ohh and i have been in an email war with MymusicInc.com They are refusing to do anything, except ask me question , like " how is it a scam" They answer my questions with questions and never really answer anything. so if anyone has heard of this company , or plans on going there remember do not buy their service it is a scam. |
