CPU usage at 99% and does not drop no matter how long program is run I have attempted every solution suggested in the various threads I found running a search of these forums. Basically I start Limewire and my CPU slows to a crawl. First I will give my system specs and then I will tell you what steps I have taken to fix this problem: CPU: Athlon XP @ 2GHz(actual, not plus rating) Memory: 1 GB PC3200 DDR(CAS 2.5) Storage: 3x40 GB WD drives, 1x160 GB USB2.0 drive Video: nVidia GeForce 6600GT, latest drivers I have done the following to fix the problem: Purged Limewire install x.x.28 Purged Java Run Time Environment 5, build 2 Scanned all spyware and virus problems, none found. Many programs used for this task, all came up clean. Checked for overheating problems. None found. Windows is updated. Downloaded and installed Java Runtime Environment 5, build 4, which is the newest version. Downloaded and installed Limewire x.x.30 CPU usage is still immense, and does not improve after time. If anything, it gets worse. Rebooting the system has no effect. I run nothing but essential services and driver control panels in memory. I have a very streamlined bootup. I have no spyware or virii. I have everything updated. This is frustrating because Limewire is an otherwise fantastic program. Even 25% CPU usage would seem absurd on a system like this. Relatively speaking, Windows Media Player rarely exceeds 5-6% CPU usage on heavy process content(hi-res video), and UT 2004, Morrowind, and other high-CPU load games run smooth as silk. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer me. |
I had a similar problem with Bearshare First thing was I had to disable simple file sharing to gain access to a file. I had just formatted and started to download some stuff and would go into my downloads and if I even some much as highlighted this file, my CPU would max out. When I shut down it would say explorer not responding. I reabled simple file sharing and it seems better so far. Not sure about the reboot not doing any good though. |
I don't seem to have any problems accessing the files. I have not toggled simple file sharing on and off though. Does anyone know what that does relative to Limewire? |
go to task manager scroll through all your applications running, it should show a list of objects and all of them should have numbers beside them (XP) these numbers represent the CPU power they are requiring, end-task w/e is taking up 95% or w/e it may be |
I have done that. I always end up closing Limewire because IT is what is using all that CPU. The only other thing is system idle task but obviously I'm not supposed to close that. I should mention I've been doing computer repair for over a decade! |
Well it doesn't look like it should be from your sys. specs. You seemed to have plenty of resources. I was going to say scan for spyware but you already did that. You say you updated windows that may be the problem. One more thing I've been using Bearshare for almost 5 years, I recomend you try out Bearshare |
Mine does same thing My computer does the very same thing... :D was beginning to think I was alone I have very similar system to yours too. Athlon XP x64 3000+ CPU 1Gb RAM 200Gb Seagate HDD nVidia 7800GTX Video card with 78.01 drivers Windows XP Pro + SP2 Latest Limewire Latest Java VM from SUN I see Limewire taking 80 - 99% of CPU, with javaw.exe taking the remainder. I also notice the same with another java program, but I cant remember what it was now. I am a computer technician by profession, and I have taken all the usual steps to work out the fault. It would appear that its caused by the java VM, except that Azureus works on my system, wich is a java Bittorrent client. EDIT: Remembered what the other program was... its the video player at the website http://www.bigad.com.au, which is also java based. |
same thing for me Athelon 64 2800 1GB ram 120GB HD ATI Radeon 9800 Windows XP PRo. SP2 all updates My whole computer locks up when I start up...only when limewire is running. My whole internet connection(cable) goes down the toilet as well..... No idea whats going on |
CPU? Dangus: is your CPU a 64 bit chip? And is anyone having this problem with p4 chips? We may have a culprit ... :( |
this would make sense becuase i too have this problem, and im using a AMD 4200 overclocked too 2.64Ghz, but i have actually successfully used limewire on this computer so i really dont know |
I was also able to run limewire on my system. Maybe try downgrading to JRE 1.4.2? Also, make sure you have AA and AF turned off in your video drivers. I saw somewhere that they cause problems on some video cards with limewire |
My CPU is alwayz maxed out with LimeWire 4.9 dunno y and i have 512 mb, its LimeWire. Cause LimeWire 4.8 i never had any problems, this new one is just problems! Ohh and i Have a Compaq Presario 3300+AMD 64(2.40ghz) 512Mb DDR 250GB HD(7200 RPM) DVD-RW/CD-RW I havent upgraded my graphics card yet so! |
hey all, Just a note to let you know, I have fixed it on my PC. The problem did indeed turn out to be that I had Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering turned on the the video driver. Check your driver and make sure they are set to 'Application Controlled' The setting is under 'Quality and Performance Settings' under advanced in display properties settings tab. To make that easier to follow, Right click desktop, choose properties. Select the settings tab at the top go to advanced. In the new box, choose the tab labelled with your video card. The tab should also have the nVidia logo on it. When you click this tab, a menu will pop out to the left. On this menu, choose 'Performance and Quality settings', and you should see 'Antialiasing settings' and 'Anisotropic Filtering' in the lower half of the dialog box. Good luck all :D |
I have an Athlon XP not a 64 chip... I checked the anti-aliasing and filtering settings and they are set so the application determines the settings. So much for that option! I guess I'll just have to run it on my laptop which is running Ubuntu... |
OK, assuming that the Graphics card is not the problem, there seems to be a general consensus of downgrading your Java VM to 1.4.2 That means uninstall Java, reboot, then download the JRE 1.4.2 from Sun's Java Site Give that a go, and report back :D Cheers, Chard Edit: Also, if either of these methods do work, please post back here and say which one. Thats how forums work best |
ok guys ive used both version of java, turned off all special effect on my gfx cards, disabled sli, installed all current drivers, and whole smoregusbord of other things, and my problem is, when i start up limewire nothing happens, except i see limewire.exe in my task manager, it doesnt show up in the system tray though and it doesnt even seem to load. Specs: AMD 4200 OC 2.64 2 EVGA 7800GTX 460 mghz each, 1.3 ghz ram 160 gb western digital ata-100 2 corsair xms 512 (1 GB total) Asus A8N-sli deluxe windows home anything else? |
Booman You games might be changing you graphics card settings I know from personal experience. The 64 bit chip has nothing to do with it I run a 64 and on C:drive I run XP Pro on D:drive I run XP 64 limewire work great on both. Best guess it is a graphics issue the link below may help. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=39600 If that doesn't do it post back it is possible you have a bad Java install. AMD 64 3200+ OC 2.3Gh/z EVGA e-Force NVidia 6200 ASUS A8N Deluxe 4 - corsair 512 registered 2GB 2 - Fujitsu 74GB Ultra 320 15K RPM SCSI 0-RAID 1 - WD 120GB C:/ Windows XP PRO D:/ Windows XP64 Beta |
I wouldn't be so quick to rule out the AMD x64 chip as being a contributing factor. It seems that everyone here is using an AMD chip, and the majority are x64 based. Maybe x64 combined with advanced video cards is causing problems. This issue does seem to be exclusive to AMD cpus. I too run XP x64 OEM on annother hdd on this system, but hardly ever use it becuse I dont have any antivirus for it yet. The fact that your using an x64 chip with no problem doesn't rule it out as a contributer to the problem, just means you dont have the other contributers. Thanks for the link though, seems to be the same solution as previously mentioned here for ATi based cards. Booman: under the processes tab in Task manager (Cant remember if this works in XP Home) check to see if limewire.exe is using some huge amount of your cpu. If not, I would suggest that your problem is not the same as the others here. If it is, recheck your display drivers. Your system is so uncannily like mine, that I would be very suprised if it was a different cause. fingers crossed, Chard |
achard I believe you are wrong there I actuall run 3 AMD 64 CPU and 1 Intel and none of them have problems related to the CPU but both AMD and Intel have had the graphic card issue. |
Alright, I stand corrected. ;) Anyone here still having problems? Chard |
ok well i just checked my graphics card, i disabled all the AA and AF, and that didnt work, and ive attempet multiple reinstalls of both ver. of java (offline) that doesnt seem to work, and limewire.exe when running uses 0% percent, and im just theorizing here but shouldn't only one of my cpu's get used for that leaving one free one? since i have a dual-core chip |
Booman I do not know if you have tried editing you registry usually you dont have to. But LimeWire should be using some CPU it sounds like a bad install but I do not know for sure. Step#1 First uninstall Java and LimeWire if you can then follow the instructions below. You will need to go to Start/Run type regedit into the box this will open the registry editor Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER go to software expand it look for Java Script if you find it delete it. Now collapse it. Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE go to software expand it look for Java, LimeWire & Magnet delete them if you find them.Collapse it Now go to HKEY_USERS go to S-1-5-21 the first one then go to software expand it look for java if you find it delete it. Collapse it. Close registry editor now go back to the original instructions and manually install Java then LimeWire. Be careful when you are in the registry do not delete anything other than I listed above you can mess up your machine if you accidentally uninstall something or change your registry settings. Step #2 You will need to install Java and LimeWire manually First go to the first link. You can find Links to java in there Download Java to your hard drive by putting a mark in the save to disc box. Save it to my documents or wherever you save downloads from the internet. Do the same with LimeWire the second link will take you there. Now with that done click on start then control panel add/remove programs and see if Java is listed on the list if it is uninstall it. Do the same with LimeWire if the un installers were not loaded you may have to manually delete the files. But in most cases this is not necessary. Now click on the Java installer you saved to your hard drive and follow the instructions after you have completed that do the same with LimeWire. Please post back and let us know if it worked. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420 http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml |
