Grey Searching Screen

Hey,

I use LimeWire 4.9.37 on my Windows XP Pro (SP 1) and recently it stopped searching. Or rather, it starts up, it shows uploads, but whenever I search for something the screen that usually shows the results just turns gray. I can not click on anything, because it's just gray.

It can't be my hardware because LimeWire worked fine up 'till a few days. I already uninstalled and re-installed once. Then uninstalled again, cleaned up my registry with a registry cleaner to remove any obsolete keys and re-installed again, but it still doesn't work.

Does anyone have a clue as to how to solve this problem?

Thanks already,
Wolve

Don't suppose you have played any games lateley. The link below might help.

It is not the starting screen that is gray. The whole of LW works, even the uploads, it is only when I enter a title for a song (for instance) and I click "Search" that the part of the window that normally shows your search results turns completely gray and does not respond to anything any more.

Otherwise LW works fine. And, like I said, I already re-installed and clean re-installed. Still no one got a clue?

Lord of the Rings December 8th, 2005 09:47 AM

Which version of Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.

Wolve December 9th, 2005 08:57 AM

LW Version 4.9.37
Java Version 1.4.2_04

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2005 09:31 AM

This may or may not help, but you could try upgrading to Java 1.5 (take the JRE) (click on link) but I'd recommend getting the "Offline" installer as this is much safer to install.

Wolve December 10th, 2005 05:34 AM

LW Version 4.9.37
Java Version 1.5.0_06

Still doesn't work. I can re-install again but I don't think that'll help much. So, this appears to be an unique and unsolvable problem? =/

Lord of the Rings December 10th, 2005 05:44 AM

When did the problem start happening? Was it due to you updating to LW 4.9.37 or have you recently installed other software or made any other system changes such as settings of graph card or monitor or OS updates?

If not any of the above, try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 in Fixes for Limewire (sample at bottom of page.)

Wolve December 11th, 2005 04:29 AM

No, I haven't changed any settings nor installed any programs that should cause any problems to LimeWire. In fact, the only thing I installed was that Registry Cleaner to Clean Install LW again.

Anyway, what exactly do I have to delete? Just the entire content of the map? For I see no file named "Preferences", nor a map (If that's what I'm supposed to delete).

Anything specific or just everything?

Lord of the Rings December 11th, 2005 04:41 AM

I'm not sure what you mean by map. But delete the folder called .limewire The previous link I gave has a sample image of how to find & delete it.

This might not be the solution but it sometimes fixes little anomalies like this.
BTW next time you open LW you'll need to go thru the set up process again.

Wolve December 11th, 2005 04:53 AM

IT WORKS!

Seriously, I wuv U!!11!

:p

Nah, really serious now, lots of thanks. I was beginning to worry quite seriously about my future abilities to download. Thanks a lot again :D

Lord of the Rings December 11th, 2005 05:19 AM

Excellent! I'm not sure why I didn't suggest this earlier. But good news! :)

Wolve December 13th, 2005 11:38 AM

NO!

It worked for a while again, and now it stopped once AGAIN!

Problem is, I don't have a .limewire folder any more. I re-installed it on D:, instead of C:, and it worked for a while when I deleted the old .limewire folder, but now I can't find the folder at all!

*Blank stare*

This is freaking me out.. =/

Lord of the Rings December 13th, 2005 03:26 PM

If you're still logged into the same account & the account is in the same location then the LW prefs will be in the same location. Each time you open LW & make any settings, a .limewire prefs folder will be created. Search all drives for .limewire

BTW which skin are you using? If you changed LW's skin there may be an issue with your skin V's system perhaps. Change back to the default skin.

Wolve December 14th, 2005 12:06 PM

I use the (Downloaded) Black Skin, yet the problem appears with all skins (I tried). I also couldn't find a .limewire folder anywhere on my computer.

Grandpa December 14th, 2005 07:01 PM

Go to start/search/all files and folders. Type .limewire into the box then click on search.

Before you delete the .limewire folder switch back to the default screen and do not change it after you start limewire again.

Wolve December 15th, 2005 10:21 AM

I did that and it said it couldn't find it.

It is not there. You guys think re-installing will help?

Grandpa December 15th, 2005 06:04 PM

You will need to install Java and LimeWire manually First go to the first link. You can find Links to java in there Download Java to your hard drive by putting a mark in the save to disc box. Save it to my documents or wherever you save downloads from the internet. Do the same with LimeWire the second link will take you there.

Now with that done click on start then control panel add/remove programs and see if Java is listed on the list if it is uninstall it. Do the same with LimeWire if the un installers were not loaded you may have to manually delete the files. But in most cases this is not necessary.

Now click on the Java installer you saved to your hard drive and follow the instructions after you have completed that do the same with LimeWire.

Please post back and let us know if it worked. If it did not I will give further instructions on manually deleting Java and LimeWire.

Wolve December 16th, 2005 07:20 AM

I did all that. It did not work.

Right after finishin the LW Installation I said "Start LimeWire now" and it did, opening in my downloaded Black Skin. I then typed in a search and it failed, showing the same gray searching screen you all know off.

I have a Registry Cleaner. Should I use it and try again (and again, and again, and again..?)

Grandpa December 16th, 2005 04:34 PM

My guess is the black screen is causing the problem try following the instructions below first after you uninstall LimeWire and Java go to C:/Program Files and see if there is a file named LimeWire in there if there is delete it. Then go to the instructions below

First uninstall Java and LimeWire if you can then follow the instructions below.

You will need to go to Start/Run type regedit into the box this will open the registry editor

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER go to software expand it look for Java Script if you find it delete it. Now collapse it.

Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE go to software expand it look for Java, LimeWire & Magnet delete them if you find them.Collapse it

Now go to HKEY_USERS go to S-1-5-21 the first one then go to software expand it look for java if you find it delete it. Collapse it. Close registry editor now go back to the original instructions and manually install Java then LimeWire.

Be careful when you are in the registry do not delete anything other than I listed above you can mess up your machine if you accidentally uninstall something or change your registry settings

Wolve December 17th, 2005 07:15 AM

Uninstalled Java and LimeWire. Removed 2 Java Maps (C:/ and D:/) that contained Java 1.42.0_2 still. But then...

I typed 'regedit' into Start/Run and it says: "Registry editing has been disabled by your Administrator".

First off, I AM the Administrator.

Second, I disabled Remote Registry in the Services in my Administrative Tools in my Control Panel and still it says so (It's on again now, just for safety reasons).

Third, I have a Registry Cleaner (Program), should I use that perhaps?

Grandpa December 17th, 2005 07:24 AM

I really don't care for registry cleaning programs sometimes they remove things that should not be removed. But I will say go ahead and use it if you have used it before and had no problems.

Wolve December 17th, 2005 08:35 AM

So you don't know how to de-activate that Admin Veto of me trying to clean up my registry on my own?

EDIT - I used the Registry Cleaner and removed some LW stuff, re-installed, yet it still opens in Black Skin (What if I'd remove that? Where is it located? My Search can't find it) and still has the problem.

This is getting pretty irresolvable, innit? =/

Grandpa December 17th, 2005 08:49 AM

You should be able to change it by going to Start/Control panel/User accounts/Pick a account to change/change my account type then tick computer administrator.

Grandpa December 17th, 2005 08:56 AM

Look ic C:/documents and settings/user name/.limewire/themes

As a matter of fact you just as well delete the .limewire folder again

Wolve December 17th, 2005 05:48 PM

The fun thing is that I AM Administrator of my Computer

and even funnier is that I have no .limewire map any more.

Funniest of all is that I found a map called LimeWire (No dot) in a hidden map called Application Data. I deleted that, for it contained a map called Themes and, just as with removing the .limewire Map (With dot) I got to choose my options again whilst LW was starting up.

I started without a Black Skin, aka in the default skin, and my search worked again.

What a strange yet wonderful world we live in.

Grandpa December 17th, 2005 11:50 PM

Glad to see it is working again thanks for letting us know
