Crashmaster

Hello

im using windows xp and limewire 4.10.3 on a DSL connection. the problem i've been having is that occasionally (after 10 mins - several hours) when i close/maximize limewire the computer crashes - no time for warnings, just straight to restart.

error reporting tells me that its a windows stop error caused by a device driver. i have uninstalled limewire and run morpheus and there were no problems there, but download times on morpheus were often hideously slow, so i have reverted back to limewire and am again having this problem.

can anybody help!? i would greatly appreciate it!

thanks,

Do you get a blue screen before the crash? It sounds like a driver, be it a graphic driver, cpu driver, etc, is out of date or conflicting with other hardware. LW acts as the trigger but isn't the cause. See tips here Limewire and Blue Screen of Death (click on link)

i have a geforce 6600 card. i didnt have the most recent drivers (81.08_forceware_winxp2k_international_whql.exe) which i saw had caused crashes in the links u posted, so im still not too sure what is causing the crashes. am installing those drivers now just to see if/how they change the situation, and because i want to keep drivers up to date.

wen comp crashes i dont see a blue screen of death, but the computer goes straight to restart, though it may just be that the BSOD flashes up too rapidly to see. it doesnt happen every time i maximize/exit limewire, just every now and then. occasionally there is a pause on the limewire screen before the restart.

thanks for your help so far LOTR.

A driver error would tend to suggest driver, but that's if it's the same one. There's other tips about the blank screen in lw such as turning 3D rendering off or something to that effect. But that might not apply to your card. (Sorry things are happening very slowly on my comp at present.)

If there's no BSD then it might also be a heating issue.

How long have you been using LW & how when did this problem start? Was it after a LW update or ... ?

my computer is fairly new - i installed limewire last november and it has caused crashes since. i uninstalled it and ran morpheus for a while (which didnt crash, just slow), then installed limewire 4.10.3 wen i saw it had been released hoping that it had been a recognised limewire bug that may have been fixed... alas, no.

i dont see a blank screen, and am pretty confident that overheating isnt a problem, so it must b down to my drivers... i think they are all pretty much up to date, and dont really like to revert back to older versions. just a bit cheesed that i might have to quit limewire for a while as i really like it.

cheers.

What you buy in a shop might not necessarily have the latest drivers. And keep in mind, some shops put together their own combinations. Sometimes not very compatible with each other component or brand of component, etc. So which version of Java do you have? Is it 1.4.2 or 1.5 or less? You can find out a no. of ways. One way is to go to LW's menu bar, Help>About LW & it will show what version of LW & Java you have.

i have java 1.5, and updated as many drivers as i could when i got the comp.
