Auto-uninstall? I was running LimeWire 4.9.30 on a computer using MS Windows XP and it was working okay. However, for the past two days, it seems as if LimeWire auto-uninstalls. When I click on the desktop icon, the computer searches for the shortcut and eventually comes back with an wrror saying that the launch file could not be found. When I do a search, I can find the LimeWire installation files but not the actual executable program (LimeWire.exe). Has anyone experienced this or know what could possibly be causing it? |
Which spyware programs are you using? There's some that are not very good at all & make errors. Some will remove LW despite the fact it has no spyware or adware. Recommended are 1. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE), & 2. ad-ware (FREE) The spyware forum (spywarrior) gives the above 2 the royal thumbs up: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_...are.htm#online |
I use both Spybot and Ad-Aware weekly. I run the latter on Fridays but LimeWire disappeared yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday). I also use Norton AntiVirus for my daily virus screening. |
Auto Delete Edonline Your problem seems interesting and mysterious simply because what is happening to you should not happen. There are a few questions I would like to ask: 1) Do you share your PC with anyone else? (An obvious question but I had to ask). 2) What version of Norton Antivirus are you using and do you have the up to date virus definitions? 3) What website did you get your Limewire app from? 4) Do you have any windows utilities that auto run when you switch your PC on or when windows starts up? 5) Do you have any other spyware apps that you use? Once you have answered these questions I, or someone else, may be able to help you. UK Bob |
1. I'm the only person who uses my computer on a regular basis. My father uses but very rarely. 2. I am running Norton AntiVirus 2005, Version 11.0.16.2 and all of the definitions are up to date. They download and install automatically but every now and then I also do a manual Live Update. 3. I downloaded the LimeWire installation file from the official site, www.limewire.com 4. The only program that runs on startup besides the antivirus, firewall protection, etc is HP OfficeJet StartUp 5. The only spyware programs I use are Spybot, AdAware and AOL Spyware Protection BTW, I tried running LimeWire while doing this message and it opened and ran perfectly fine. I will have to see if it continues doing so over the next few days. |
Okay, I just tried running LimeWire again. The icon was missing from the desktop and when I click on the location, I receive a message saying "Missing Shortcut". When I try to browse, I cannot find a LimeWire folder under programs on my C: drive. I didn't do anything between my two messages (i.e. run antivirus or spyware programs). |

Edonline I think I see the solution to your problem, I seem to remember that AOL Spyware sees Limewire as spyware, and so always wants to delete LW. So I guess that your AOL Spyware is auto deleting your Limewire.exe file because AOL has, in it's backwards wisdom, classifisified LW as spyware. That is why I, and most forum members, only recommend that you use Ad-Aware, Spybot or MS AntiSpyware, any other spyware product is likely to give you false positives where Limewire is concerned and will delete parts of LW's program. Thanks for the advice. I will try removing the AOL software and see what happens. |
I have the exact same problem and i know for sure its Aol Spyware Protection But the question is how do i remove that or disable it? There seems to be no option to turn it off and not in add/remove programs either. |
