Freezes and goes to grey screen during search/download I am a first-time user of Limewire. I have been impressed with the program so far; however, I am experiencing some problems. I installed LW 4.10.3 and updated to Java 1.5.0.60. Whenever I attempt to perform a search or download, the program freezes and locks up. After awhile, the screen turns to grey and will eventually reload. The search or download will complete itself after multiple cycles (freeze, grey screen, reload). Sometimes I get disconnected or the program becomes “not responding” during the cycle as well. I have searched the forums for an answer to this issue without success. I have double checked my firewall configurations, and they are correct. Any suggestions to fix this problem would be much appreciated. I’m not sure if this issue relates to LW program, Java version, connection (firewall), video card, or system compatibility. Here is what I have: Windows XP SP2 64 MB RAM 4 GB free space ATI 3D Rage PRO LAN (Comcast Cable modem- Toshiba PCX 1100) Limewire 4.10.3 Java 1.5.0.60 Also run Symantac Antivirus 9.0.310 (no added firewall) and CCleaner 1.26.218 I also tried the test (as posted on other forums) and “Your test worked!” I know I have an outdated computer, but all my other programs run fine. Thanks so much. |
I'm new to the forums and was wondering if the Windows Support forum is the correct place to post the previous issue. Thanks for your help. |

birdy, thanks for the response. i looked at the link you gave me and attempted the suggested fix. i deleted the .limewire folder and tried to load up LW. i was prompted to complete the initial LW setup again. i followed through with the new setup but still encountered the same problem. whenever i try to search or download, i get a grey screen and the program eventually becomes "not responding." I'm thinking about uninstalling LW and Java. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which versions of LW and Java I should reinstall according to my system settings (see previous post)? Currently I'm running LW 4.10.3 and Java 1.5.0.06. Thanks. |
You need to uninstall the Java version you have and install j2re-1_4_2_10-windows-i586-p from the sun website . I had the same problem. This cured it. Enjoy ! |
