Gray Screen/Very Slow

I've been reading through probably every post on this board that deals with limewire loading and then turning into a gray screen with just limewire:enabling etc.. on top. I did all of the tests and got the "Test Worked" page to come up, I uninstalled and installed java 3 or 4 times, and installed 1.4 2 times and am now back to 1.5. I rolled back drivers on my graphics card.

It seems to come on and stay on for about 5-10 minutes, then it goes to the gray screen, sometimes after a few minutes it will go back to normal but other times it won't.

I have more than enough free space on my computer (100gbs) I have 2gbs ram I'm running Windows xp (i tried all of the firewall tricks)

I've even tried going between 4.10.0 and 4.10.5 and nothing, I have pro if that matters.

Any advice? :(

Have you tried changing video settings?:

yes I did :(

I have/had AA and AF on application controlled.

To give an idea, I started limewire about an hour ago. After 10 minutes the screen went grey for about 15 minutes, then it came back and was fine for the next half hour and then within the last 2 minutes went back to grey:confused:

You didn't say whether you've tried deleting the LW preferences folder. If you haven't, give it a try:

I deleted the .limewire folder

the thing that confused me is that in that thread it says to go into application data. I deleted .limewire folder right from the documents and settings/ my username folder.

And I went into C:/Program files and deleted the limewire folder there (after doing it from add/remove programs)

I'm completly stumped.

santino2112 February 3rd, 2006 07:23 PM

I could have sworn I went to show hidden files, but for some reason when I went back into it now it didn't show up as show hidden files.

This may work, thank you. I'll post the outcome.

santino2112 February 3rd, 2006 07:28 PM

Ok now another stupid question..

I turned limewire off, am I supposed to uninstall limewire or I don't touch limewire I just delete the limewire folder in the application data file?

Thank you for your help :)

birdy February 3rd, 2006 07:32 PM

Just delete the preferences folder while LW's closed. Then restart LW & give it a while to settle down. You'll have to go thru tools > options again & reset your preferences.

santino2112 February 3rd, 2006 07:33 PM

ok thank you very much.

So far so good, everything seems to be back to normal. :D :)

santino2112 February 3rd, 2006 07:38 PM

I take that back, it was open for 10 minutes and went to the grey screen again. :(

birdy February 3rd, 2006 07:47 PM

Sorry it didn't work. Hopefully one of the gurus will read this thread & have some more ideas for you:)

*Just to make sure, did you get your LW from the official site:
www.limewire.com ?? (if it's a scam version, there's no guarantee it'll work properly)

santino2112 February 3rd, 2006 07:50 PM

I really appreciate your help though.

I have preferences as 10 downloads at once would that make a difference? is there any preference that would be causing this? lol

yes I got it from limewire.com, It's the pro version and I downloaded it off of the download link you get when you sign up (if that matters at all) I'm pulling at straws here lol

birdy February 3rd, 2006 07:57 PM

Well, 10 downloads is quite a lot. You could try setting it to something lower (I have mine set on 3). Depends a bit on what connection & speed you have.

santino2112 February 3rd, 2006 08:01 PM

oh ok, one last question.

I deleted the folder again and went back into LW, it was doing okay, no problems and then I went to preview one of the downloads and the screen went grey:confused:

birdy February 3rd, 2006 08:11 PM

Just try reducing the number of simultaneous downloads (you don't have to delete prefs, just make the change & apply). Are you downloading huge files? When you open LW, give it half an hour to settle before you start downloading. Just try downloading a single file & see what happens.

This thread has lots of info about maximising dld/uld success:

;)

santino2112 February 3rd, 2006 08:18 PM

Now we are getting somewhere lol

thank you. I reduced the downloads to 5 and I'm not having any problems.

birdy February 3rd, 2006 08:22 PM

Good job! Hope it lasts:D

santino2112 February 4th, 2006 05:59 AM

I woke up this morning and the screen was grey again, I set it to 3 downloads last night. Then on top of that, whenever I have to exit LW and restart it from going grey it says sorry we can't start any of your old downloads.

Any help please:D

I've tried to do a bunch of things you guys have mentioned in here, and I'm still having troubles too. I really like LimeWire, and really don't want to have to switch. I mainly like the 'Whats new' feature.

If you guys happen to find the answer to this problem, I would greatly appreciate it as well. :)

Lord of the Rings February 4th, 2006 03:29 PM

Which version of Java are you running? Go to LW's menu bar, Help>About LW & it will show both LW & Java version. Tell us what version of Java & LW you're using.

Try changing skins. Go to LW's menu bar, View>Change skins & choose another skin option. Do you still suffer the same problems with the new skin?

Set your graphic card settings back to default &/ set 3D to minimum. As suggested earlier, see GeoForce 3D setting, or/and this one The way to fix the Blank screen on startup
Sometimes the problem can be solved by the particular driver version used. Be that updating or downgrading the driver version.
