Default LimeWire popping up relentlessly? Quick Fix here.

Hi, If you previously had a trojan/worm/virus that screwed up cmd.exe regedit.exe and task manager etc, and also caused LimeWire to reopen itself, well I have an easy solution. For starters rune spyware doctor or some other spyware removal program to remove whatever is doing this to you. To get back limewire to normal, you simply go to your c:/program files/Limewire folder. Find LimeWire.exe and rename it, doesn't matter if you delete a letter or rename it completely. After renaming this file, right click it and click create shortcut, then move the new shrotcut to your desktop and delete the old. Viola, now LimeWire once again opens when needed to, not when windows decides to pop it up on you. Also, if you're having trouble getting taskmanager cmd and regedit back, I suggest this thread.

Good luck and take care.

There is only one problem with your quick fix. If LimeWire is still trying to start by itself after you run spy sweeper you still have the virus. The only thing you are doing by renaming the file is stooping it from opening limewire but the virus is still there. I recommend you go to the link below and get some help from Norbie. Register on his site and post a Hijack This log and let Norbie have a look at it. He will tell you if you still have the virus or not.

Actually with one form of a trojan that causes this that's not true, or atleast wasn't in my case, this trojan known as surfsidekick. Even after being manually removed from the registry etc. it has edited into windows somewhere (where I don't know) to cause LimeWire.exe to re-open itself. After I removed this trojan from my pc all the problems stopped, I could use cmd.exe once again etc. But LimeWire still continually opened. Thus I resorted to this quick fix. As of now there is nothing running in the background that is abnormal and my cpu usage is at a steady 0-3% with no spikes whatsoever. This may not be the case for winupdates, but for surfsidekick it is. But I appreciate the assistance and will look into Norbie just in case, can never be too safe anyhow. Thanks.

Hello,

It's always best to get a checkup rather than try running a general fix - if there was such a thing which fixed everyone's computer I would have pasted it on my site (and I'd get some time off :P ).

As I get many Limewire users coming to my site for help I get to monitor the viruses and I keep on saying new variants with different filenames etc. As it keeps on changing, there isn't a general fix that can be used
