Questions Re: LW Freezing and Download Speed

I've been having a few problems every since I "upgraded" to the Pro version and I'm wondering if someone might be able to help. I checked the FAQs/help pages for answers and didn't find much. I also spent a few hours searching the forums and after doing so I now know what being a clueless newbie feels like. In other words, what I DID find in the forums I had a little trouble understanding. First, fairly regularly LW simply stops responding. For example when I atttempt to add folders which I want to share or rename a file I am attempting to download, the program just freezes and I have to close it via the Windows Task Manager. Also a few other options I attempted to change also caused this problem.

Secondly, is there some reason why when I am downloading a file from 10 hosts the speed is 0 kps? A 4 MB files shouldn't take over 5 hours from 10 hosts should it? I have the latest version of LW as well as Java and my graphics card is not an issue, I use XP and a cable modem (3566 kps down/330 up). What's odd is that I experienced none of these problems with the free version. Thanks for the help and your patience.

Where did you get your Pro version from?? Did you pay $ 18.88 and downloaded it from the official LW site?
http://www.limewire.com/

If your answers to both are yes, then you could try to delete your .limewire preference folder and see if that makes a change.Follow the suggestions in point 2&3 in the post of LOTR:
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420

And post back with hte results;)

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I did pay $18.88 and got it from the official site. I'll take a look at the post you suggested and will report back. :)

FOTH--Well despite your suggestions, I'm still not having much luck with correcting the problem. What's really got me puzzled though is the speed problem which I mentioned. It seems that after first opening LW the download speed is fairly normal but after a few seconds it changes to 0 kb/s regardless of how many hosts are available. Several times I've left LW open for several days and files still don't complete, or even "progress" regardless of their size. A friend of mine who is having similar problems checked the message boards and found conflicting solutions to the problem. Like I mentioned it's odd I had none of these problems with the free version and I don't think I've changed any of the options that would make a difference. Might it do any good to reinstall Pro or just go back to using the free version? This is probably something wrong on my end. BTW I really appreciate your help. Thanks again.

My hint regarding the .limewire folder was meant to solve your problem with LW freezing.
So, does this still happen or did the trick with deleting the folder do it??

Regarding your connection and speed problem (something I haven't try to solve in my first reply due to your freezing problem -having a good speed, yet the program refuses to work properly wouldn't make much sense), who is your ISP?

The best would be you give me some more specs (I know that you've answered already some of those questions):
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
12. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
;)

Yeah I realize your suggestion didn't address the speed question (I probably shouldn't have lumped both problems in the same post) and no I'm afraid the tips with deleting that folder didn't work.

1. XP Service Pack 2, Home Edition
2. Router FW
3. 512 RAM, Pentium III, 863 MHz
4. 10 GB
5. Cable
6. Surfboard SB 4100/Linksys WRT54G (not using it for wireless)
7. Home
8. LW 4.10.9 Pro/Jave 1.5.0_06
9. Comcast
10. Sharing connection with one other machine and no other P2P client
11. New user and new problem
12. The test worked

Sorry I should have provided all that to begin with.

Okay, I assume you've disabled the built-in firewall fo Windows XP and you use only the one you mentioned (with LW allowed to access the internet).

Your freezing of LW still buffles me.........you could try to uninstall LW and all Java versions. Then go and download the Java offline installer (JRE) 1.5.0_05:
http://java.sun.com/products/archive..._05/index.html

Install the Java and then reinstall LW. Again, as long as the freezing problem isn't solved, I do not think that it makes sense to concern with the speed problem. It might be that the speed and freeze problem are related, but to find out we have to get rid of the freezing first...;)
Try my suggestion and post back......

Just another suggestion.......after you tried the Java change and the freezing stops but the speed problem persists.....

Did you check to ensure UPnP is enabled on your router? http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...516#post179516 Linksys UPnP setting (click on link)

Depending on your linksys model, it might be worth manual port forwarding it. You'll find your model here http://portforward.com/routers.htm

Thanks, I'll give that a shot and report back. And yes I definitely disabled the Windows firewall (yikes)

I have the same issue. I have Pro and whenever I start LimeWire it on TurboCharge and 10 host and having T3 connection but still 0KBps. I am thinking of switching to BearShare because LimeWire is pissing me off lately

Yeah well Cox is known to shape bandwidth for some people. Looks like they've started to do it to you also. You can find them listed here ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire
