Crash problem.

You see, I had the free version of LW and I upgraded. The free version rarely had some crashes, but since I upgraded, LW pro, keeps crashing every time i open it. Let me explain my actions: I connect on the Internet regularly (note that I have a 56k modem), and open LimeWire. It loads normally, and it works normally as well. However, after some minutes (between 2 and 15 min. since I open LW. Also, when i'm not searching it goes normally for about 30 min. until it crashes) the program stays frozen and I'm clicking everywhere with no response. If I minimize and maximize it, i get a blank screen. If I close it with task manager, the system continues to react slowly to my actions, or crashing, leaving me with no options but to push the reset button. What is my problem? Any help would be appreciated.:o

Baring in mind you haven’t said much about your PC, I wonder could you be running out virtual memory, i.e. the space on your hard disk windows uses for temporary memory.

It may be an idea to check this setting.

My computer has: AMD Athlon 64bit 3200+, 1GB RAM, GeForceFX 6600, 120GB HDD, Windows XP Professional SP1. It is pretty new, I got it in April. Where is this setting you mention ukbobboy01?

1. I'd suggest removing Java using your Add/remove programs control panel. Then re-installing using the "Offline" Java installer: Java 1.5 (take the JRE) which is about a 15 MB download.

2. Also, delete your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire (sample image included at bottom of page.)

3. If still problems, try step 5 in the previous link about changing compatibility mode of LW to either windows 2000 or NT. ;)

You see I encounter a problem. The Java offline installation file is 65 MB big and I have a slow connection. When I start the download, it says that it will finish in about 4 hours. The problem is that I never have enough time to download it and when I go to the Java download history page, it is not there and I have to download it allover again to stay out of time again!!!!!!!!!

Go to this page: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
and download the package described below. It is only 20MB.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 7
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

If you are still having problems try downloading it with Firefox.

By the way. All the files on that page are also on the sharing network too.

Go ahead and start your download from the web site (they love to keep count
and get you to agree to the license) but if you also start another download with
LimeWire or BearShare that will be good insurance.

What the F**K? I did everything you recommended (Changed the compatibility to windows 2000, deleted the .limwire folder, reinstalled java) and it continues crashing ten minutes after I open it!!! What is going on?!

AaronWalkhouse July 24th, 2006 12:40 PM

How much RAM do you have in that computer?
If it is 512 megabytes or less then try reducing the number of programs that load on startup.

stoak July 24th, 2006 12:44 PM

If you can read in one of the previous posts, I have 1GB of RAM memory in my computer.:)

And I also have scanned my computer for spyware or viruses messing with limewire.

Lord of the Rings July 25th, 2006 04:10 AM

When LW 4.12.4 is released which should be within the next 24 hours with luck, then get it http://www.limewire.com/english/content/download.shtml
It apparently addresses issues "some" people have been having with LW crashing. This might not fix your problem but it's a good place to start. If it doesn't fix it, post back & let us know. In that case might ask you to run a console report which may show where the problem is.

Guys, I just downlaoded limewire basic 4.12.4, and it still continues crashin. I don't know what in hells' name is going on. Im gettin desperate(I had Kazaa before and it made me format my disk two times because of their f***ing viruses and spyware. I really liked limewire)... PLEASE HEEEELP!!!!!!!!!

My first reply to you included a link to a thread where users had the same problem like you,......and they also had a GeForce graphic card (one the 6600 and the other one the 6800 Ultra).
And since the crashing happens also with the new version of LW, you'll have to look at this one more time, since it is definitely a problem of your system and not of LW !!

I have the same problem with coz4444 but my computer doesn't restart on its own. I restart it after a short period of time because I can't get any response by it after closing limewire with the task manager. Anyway, I will try to update my drivers and see if the problem continues. ( My question is why does it crash since I upgraded to PRO? ) I will contact you when I'm done with the drivers.:)

Hey guys!:) Guess what? I made limewire working again. It was so simple: I just had to format my disk because I had an other virus problem. Now I downoaded LW 4.12.4 again and it works perfectly.(But don't close this thread yet, because I'm so bad-lucked and if it happens again, I contact you.) Thanks for your help anyway! :) :) :)
