Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default Problems with movies crashing Windows Shared folder

I've had Limewire for about 8 months, and have been downloading movies and audios files for all this time. I have a problem which I did not find covered by searching on my topic. Some movies that I have downloaded seem to have an inherent problem. Perhaps they have been pirated or the creator has inserted some sort of code which causes them to crash the Windows folder in which they are stored??? I only have a few movies that do this.

What happens is they download great, and I can even view them by opening a different viewer than Windows Media player, but when I go into my Shared file where they are stored, they cause the Shared folder to crash and close. This is very irritating and the only solution that I can think of thusfar is to remove the offending movies from the Shared folder so that they do not cause the folder to crash. I'm not sure what causes a movie that is playable and even a great rip to crash my Windows folder. I know it's the movie because as soon as I isolate it by quickly moving it out of the folder before the folder closes, then the folder is fine after that.

What are some solutions for this problem?

I have visited the page with the video codecs and have found several of the links out of date. So, please, before directing me to the video codecs page by ContraBanned, know that I have already tried many of these links and have found that at best they do not work, or at worst they cause even worse problems to my computer to the point of having to delete the offending application.

You don't say what kind of PC you are using, or if it's new. A friends of mine had a similar problems with an older PC. He solved it by putting every movie in a new folder within the folder, one for each movie, and everything worked after that. The PC couldn't support a folder that big, thats why it keept closing on him.

I'm using Windows XP, and it's about 2 years old. This problem only occurs with one or two movies out of 40, not all movies. And, as soon as I take them out of the Shared folder, then the folder is fine. I can't even put them inside the Windows Shared folder because then it crashes. So, they are sitting on my desktop. I'm just thinking that there must be some reason this is happening, I just don't know what it is.

According to my XP's specs, I have 512 MB of total physical memory. I think that's RAM. I know I have a 160 GB hard drive.

This problems only happens when I download movie files from Limewire, which leads me to believe there's something attached to the file, or it needs a codec of some sort. It's frustrating to have the only copy of a movie (that I find on Limewire) cause the Windows Shared folder to crash every time the file is inside the folder. No one else can share this file because it causes crashes to the Shared folder.

I've actually just exprienced this again this morning, as it has happened to me before....
When the MS error report appears click on details now look for the file name for instance mine was xvid.ax. you then do a search in your HD and locate the file and delete it.....

As far as I can tell the problem file excisted in my dvd santa and when I deleted the bad file it stopped santa from working, so I reloaded santa, so I can finish my burning and haven't opened my shared folder again today(want to finish the burning first)

The 1st time I had 3 files, and they were movies that must of gone wrong and I just deleted them and everything was fine after that.
Its not a virus, so dont worry about that....
I hope this helps you, please let me know how you go.....

Of course, but thanks for asking.

I scanned it with 2 different AVs and an online scan. No virus. Just some problem with certain files.

Oops, didn't see the post by Wondering Why before I responded to Grandpa.

It doesn't seem to be a virus, nevertheless, it keeps causing weird problems. Anything that crashes files on your computer is suspect. I've checked my my computer for spyware, and found some several times.

I think the nature of Limewire and other file sharing apps is that you tend to pick up more spyware than you might otherwise. I could be wrong about that, but it seems like every time I open Limewire and use it, I find spywares related to file sharing. Specifically, tracking cookies related to downloading music and movies. That's my biggest beef about using Limewire. It seems like the price you pay is getting infected with spyware, which if you don't know (like I didn't), can be pretty nasty and cause horrible problems, not unlike a virus. Problems such as crashing your computer daily several times. Problems such as weird things happening, like extra drives being added onto your computer without you having put them there. Problems like removing your drives without you having removed them.

I have found www.trendmicro.com to be extremely helpful. They have a free spyware check. They used to have a free online virus check, but I think they are asking for donations now, since every time I try to use it, I get a blank page. Anyone else use housecall.trendmicro.com?

Hi, I think we hit the send button at the same time lol...
Limewire itself doesnt contain the spyware and stuff its the crook people out there that include it in the files they share always be careful of file sizes and such to avoid these problems...I have used trend before but not for some time so im not sure if its still free or not, but if your AV is up to date you should be fine...
Maybe try burning the movies and then delete them to stop your shared folder doing this, it is a pain I know, Im still to go back into mine as I know it will happen again as soon as I do...
Best of luck....

I'd burn the movies if I could. Are you talking about burning to a CD? I understand that the quality is not very good, so I didn't want to do that. My DVD burner (ripper?) doesn't work on this computer - never has - it was a lemon (jus the DVD burner).

If you are talking about CD burning, how is the movie quality?

The quallity of the burn depends on the file that you have if its not a good copy of the movie it doesnt come out to great, but if they are good they come out good, I also think that some converting programs are better than others....
