Loads on start up w/o my consent I opted to NOT have Limewire load on start up but it still does regardless. I went to the support site and the closest thing i could find was about a virus that causes Limewire to repeatedly open on its own, but it didn't seem to apply to my problem, and i did scan everything for that virus anyway I'm stumped |
In fact, if LW starts up by itself, it is usually a virus. You could try to check with any program of the following list (I reckon using all of them): http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/(free) http://www.grisoft.com(good free AVG) http://www.ewido.com(free trial which can still be used and updated after the period has ended -the best in my opinion) http://www.ccleaner.com/download/(free) Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE) If you can't get rid of it go here and get some free computer help: http://norbiesworld.co.uk/computerhelp :Smilywais: |
i have AVG and CCleaner. I scanned every music file and every file of Limewire's i could find on my computer it's not starting on its own other than to load into my system tray when i first start my computer. when i exit it, it doesnt start up again i think the virus name is ACRA or something similar...in any case i copied the name and ran a search and still nothing |
Well, there is still the possibility of a corruption in the preference folder. Try to delete this folder as described here in Point #2 & 3 in Fixes for Limewire: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420 If that doesn't solve the problem, try uninstalling LW via START>Programs>LimeWire>uninstall... After you have done so, search for any remaining file of LW via START>Search...>For files and folders.... using the search query "limewire". Delete all found files and reboot youe computer, then reinstall LW. :Smilywais: |
i've downloaded Ad Aware and running a scan now, and will check out the suggestions in that link you gave me - thanks:) |
Sativa (and FOTH) I too suffer from this problem of LW starting up when I either reboot or switch on my PC and (panicking) thought it was some sort of virus. So, I did an exhaustive search of my C:\ drive and came up with nothing (but I did find an inactive folder C:\.........\ Teknum\updater .exe’ a notorious piece of spyware) After all this I remembered that I had ticked an option in LW dealing with magnetic links or some such thing, which I have not unticked yet. This option has placed a LW shortcut in my startup folder, when I get the time I intend to delete this unwanted “shortcut”. UK Bob LW can make you go grey having fun:yahoo: :nono: :xirokrotima: |
i also deleted a short cut in the folder yesterday, then today i saw a run at start up option in my start/program files so i deleted that too i'm only concerned because of the possibility of a virus - it's not that big a deal otherwise that it loads even though it's not supposed to. it's more an annoyance |
Satvia Did you check for that ticked magnetic link option in LW, I can't remember which tab it is under because I am still at work but it should be easy to find. UK Bob |
i checked everywhere in the LW options but didn't see magnetic link in any case, because i had deleted the short cut i had to start over (appoint a folder to share, etc) when i opened limewire. it asked then if i wanted to load on start up and i said NO so we'll see next time i turn on the computer |
MagnetMix 1 Attachment(s) Guys and Golls Attached is a screen print of the MagnetMix option I ticked, thereafter everytime or rebooted or switched on my PC LW started. I believe that other users, like me, suffering from LW start-up problem probably has this option ticked. So, the next thing to do is untick MagnetMix and remove LWs short cut from the start-up folder. UK Bob |
