LW splash screen dissapears

Limewire was working fine for years and all of a sudden I cannot get the splash screen to get past "Loading User Interface". I have done everything that Lord of the Rings suggests with the same results. Here is what I have:

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
Win98 SE

2. What firewalls you have?
None now, I disconnected my Router just in case it was a problem. Connected directly to Cable Modem

3. How much ram?
512 Meg

4. Hard Disk space available?
10 gigs

5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
Cable

6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
Motorola Surfboard 5100

7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
[B******--Kazaa works fine-[/B]

8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
Newest Java 1.5 Offline installed
Newest LW 4.1.26 Offline installed
Uninstalled my LW Pro 4.10 version to try the free one

9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider)?
Optonline Cablevision

10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
"Your test worked!"

11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
Not now- Disconnected the router.

12. Is this a your 1st try at FW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
New problem with experienced user

13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of FW's interface?
Never gets to that point

Oh Lord, please HELP! :rolleyes_2:

So you tried deleting your LW preferences folder? And all the other tips in the 'Fixes for LW'? Fixes for Limewire

Are you aware that in some areas Optonline Cablevision block ports so you'd get a firewall issue if you could get it started. Answer is to use a high port number such as in the 49xxx range.

Yes sir.

I can't get it started but the test page works on the 6346 port. And it was working last time I used it about a week ago. But those firewall issues would only affect connecting. I cannot get the splash screen to get past the "loading user interface" scrolling message on the bottom of the splash screen. My Java is working fine on other sites that load the console. I just updated it. I tried the newest Beta version 1.6 but it only works with XP or Vista.
And Kazaa works fine so I still suspect a Java problem?.I am going to try and install on the wifes computer which will eliminate any network possibilities.

LW will only use Java 1.6 if no other versions of Java are on your system. So you'd need to remove the earlier versions.

You've got me stumped. I'm not sure what the problem is.

When you deleted the preferences folder, did you look for the hidden folder called Application Data? It can only be found if you turn on 'show hidden files & folders' before searching for limewire.

For windows 98 the earlier versions of LW the LW prefs were found here: Your .limewire folder is in "C:\My Documents"
I'm not sure about now. The new prefs folder is normally found in application data folder.

Yeah I did that but it still gave me a warning that it is only for WinXP and above, but I tried it anyway and got exception errors so I uninstalled it and put 1.5 back in.

It is in Windows folder right at the top.(because of the decimal point first)
I did a search of the hard drive for anything that has the limewire word and there are no other places in Win98.
I am in the process of installing everything on the other computer to see what happens. If it works, it will eliminate lots of things.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks for the help!

Well here is what I found:
Installed LW and JAVA on my wifes computer (win98 SE, only 200mhz. processor, you know the rest- older machine but works for her)
She only had the Microsofts Java so I installed Sun version 1.4 to start to see what happens, and the LW free version. As I expected, everything worked fine first try. Downloaded from LW with no problem. So my problem is obviously some setting that went bad in my computer somewhere. But what and where I don't know. All I know is it was working last weekend when I used LW last. So I reverted my Registry back to last weeks startup (upon start up, get into command prompt only, and type "scanreg /restore". You will get a list of saved registry files (I set mine to save 20 restarts worth using TweakUI) and choose the one you want windows to use. And I rebooted and everything works fine (except I had to reinstall Java again because the old registry didn't have the new changed Java installation in it). Bottom line, I don't know what setting or whatever was changed on my system but it works now. Thanks for all the Help L.O.T.R.
