Install does not recognize Java 2 REse v1.4

:( If I try to install Limewire on WinXP (PIV, 1Ghz, 256MB ram), they ask to install Java RE v1.3. Java REse v1.4 is currently installed but not recognized. So the install stops because I don't want to install an earlier version of Java RE. How do I fix that LimeWire recognizes v1.4? THNX:confused:

registry

I'm sure the registry has a key in there someplace about your java RE version number. Try running regedit and searching for "java". If anybody knows where the key might be, please post it.

I tried a search ('java') in REGEDIT and that's what I found:
My Computer->HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Javasoft->Java Runtime Environment->CurrentVersion = 1.4

What do I have to do with it?

value

finding it was the hard part. First, do file->export registry value when the key is selected. then call the file something you can remember. change the value to 1.3.1, reboot and try to install. if that doesn't work try 1.3 and retry the install. If you get it to install, double click on the .reg file you made and reinstall your old value. I would also reload your old value if you can't get it to work at all. I think this is all you can do without installing the old version. If this doesn't work, repost your question in this thread and I'll see if I can't figure something else out for you. Best of luck.

16 bit

If you haven't installed java 1.4, then there will not be this registry key. try installing 1.3.1 and doing the install with that. Also, windows has not been 16bit since windows 95. 98/me/nt/2000 are all 32bit. xp is either 64bit or will be soon, i haven't kept track in the last while. I would try installing 1.3.1 and seeing if that error goes away. Also, you may have downloaded a wi*** version if such a thing exists. If anyone else has some thoughts, I'd like to hear them as well.

Hope this helps.

i downloaded 1.31...installed, and tryed to install lw....the same error....
there's only one version for all windows, i think

Did you try installing with the administrator priviledges? Did you try using the win 95 compatability mode with the LW installer?

The above user was correct in identifying the registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Javasoft->Java Runtime Environment->CurrentVersion

as the one that we check. We check for the presense of 1.3, as this is the version that LimeWire is really tested with. LimeWire will work with 1.4, although we have not thoroughly tested it with this platform. You can, however, install LimeWire and then uninstall the 1.3.1 JRE. For LimeWire to work after doing this, though, you would have to change the targets of all of the shortcuts to point to your jave 1.4 version of javaw.exe.

Note the parts of the GUI will look a little funny, but you might see some nice performance improvements.

i installed winxp new and now i can install imeh without any problems....

Hi Adam,

I was wondering if you could change the check for the version to something like "You use 1.4 but LimeWire was tested with 1.3.1. LimeWire may not work properly. Continue anyway? Yes/No". Also I think it's not a good idea to automatically start to download the JRE needed.

So we don't need to mess around with the Registry.

Btw, I installed 1.4 and then 1.3. So my setting is 1.3. When I tried to install LimeWire I received the message mentioned in another post. I changed the current version to 1.3.1 and received the same result. So actually I think I'm not possible to install LimeWire at this point.

I'm really looking forward to a fixed version.

Thanx,
Vermi
