Keeps shutting down when not attended

Hi, hope someone has a solution. My Limewire Pro (4.10.9) keeps shutting down on me. Frusterates the hell out of me when I have kicked off a download and come back 30 mins later and it has gone, shut down...no error shows, starts up fine, searches fine, no real symptoms other than sgutting down.
Hope someone can help or has a suggestion.
Cheers
Paul

How many Uploads do you have set, In Uploads/ slots, Per Person & Max.

Ps. LimeWire shuts down,or your Computer shuts down.

pkbrisbane December 4th, 2006 04:17 PM

The program shuts down. Everything else seems fine. When it doesnt shut down it appears to operate as expected. I keep leaving it downloading and when I return say 1/2 hr later it has shut down. I havent actually SEEN it shut down, it's always while I am away. :bangh:

pkbrisbane December 4th, 2006 04:19 PM

I only have 1 upload max and 1 per person

This could sound like a memory issue, but also could be some curruption either in Limewire itself, or in the Java you use for it.

Could you tell us:

Java version
How much RAM

Also have you tried updating Java or deleting the preference folder for Limewire?:

pkbrisbane December 5th, 2006 03:57 AM

memory = 2 Gb
Not sure how to tell Java version...can you advise?
Havent tried to delete preference folder..

I will download the latest Java version and try deleting the .Limewire folder and report back tomorrow. Thanks for trying to help...hope it works.
cheers

Sleepless December 5th, 2006 07:23 AM

Well you will see Java Version anyway when removing it before installing upgrade, but usually you can in Limewire go to Help-->About Limewire and it will show both Limewire and Java versions.

Also your preference folder (unless you had Limewire for a long time) will just be called Limewire and will be located in Application Data (Hidden Folder)

2 GB Ram ismore than enough to run Limewire and other programs at the same time, so that's not the problem.

Vonno82 December 12th, 2006 10:06 AM

Im having the same problem but not sure which one of your instructions to follow

Limewire 4.12.6
Java 1.5.0_09

Help me please..........

radraven January 4th, 2007 08:27 PM

Limewire shuts down as soon as I turn my back!

I'm having this issue too! Limewire is shutting down on it's own when I'm not at the computer for more than 10 min or so.

Has anyone had and then successfully solved this problem?

I'm running Limewire Pro v.4.12.3.
I recently installed the Java version recommended by the "Fix Limewire" thread: Java 1.5.0_10

Other specs:
Win XP Media Center
1 Gig Memory
17 Gigs free HD space
80 files shared on Limewire
Default settings

Already tried deleting the preference folders: .limewire and all that.

Help?!

Sleepless January 4th, 2007 11:33 PM

I had this problem once and tried checking the box for "Show incoming searches" in the monitor window. It seemed to help a bit. I really don't know of a solution, but have almost the exact same specs as you (Well java version was update 6 or something like that)

Did you have the problem before updating the Java?

radraven January 5th, 2007 03:04 PM

Here's the thing, though mickjapa. The virus (I think) makes LW start up on its own. Not shut down on its own. The virus is designed (from what I understand) to start up LW and allow access to file on yr computer using LW's peer to peer technology.

This is a different problem I think.

I'll try the Incoming searches suggestion, Sleepless. Thanks.

Anyone else? Administrators?

Jeffreyi January 10th, 2007 06:00 PM

I have the same problem. On this site there is a suggestion to uninstall Jave 1.5 and re-install 1.4 as directed. I did this and i still crash!

birdy January 10th, 2007 06:18 PM

Try LOTR's suggestions in this post
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showpo...37&postcount=2

You could also see if changing compatibility makes any difference - right click on the LW icon > properties > change compatibility to Win NT or 2000.

Hi, I have a simillar problem but not exactly the same, so I just started a new thread. I hope that's not a bad thing.

When I click the cross-hair in the top right of the window, I have it set to minimise to the system tray. After a few minutes I want to view the progress of my downloads only when moving the curser over the LW icon, it disappears. I then reload LW to find that all my searches have gone and my downloads are having to reconnect. This has never happened before.

I'm not really clued up with all this about updating my java stuff so is there any down to earth solution?:p

"Birdy" - really like your quote ("A clean house is a sign of a broken computer"), I have something smart to say to my girlfriend when she complains about how my desk makes the room look bad. Cheers

birdy January 14th, 2007 06:17 PM

Maybe your LW preferences have got a bit messed up. Try deleting the preferences folder when LW is properly closed (otherwise it won't work)...this will reset all options to default. You'll have to go back through & reset things afterwards as you had them. See points 2 & 3 below for instructions. If you've used older versions of LW you might have a folder in either location...so check both;)
Fixes for LimeWire

Try that first & see if it fixes things!

That quote's my excuse every time my house looks bad:D

I'll delete that other thread now that you're in this one...no worries!

Hannushi January 14th, 2007 08:19 PM

Hi Again,

Thanks Birdie!!! It works beautifully now. Although, in case anyone else asks, i didn't realse it would cancel my current downloading downloads (I should have realised myself). I had only 30 mins remaining for one, now I have to wait 4 hours, but no probs cos now I can leave it for the 4 hours without having to re-connect. yeehaa:cool:

I used the quality line about having a clean house... with my girl. The look on her face when I said it put a smile on my face. Hehehehe:idea:

birdy January 15th, 2007 02:53 AM

This can happen if LW crashes or if LW's not closed properly before shutting down the computer.

What version of LW are you using? If you use version 4.12.3 & later, incomplete downloads should resume from from where they left off rather than starting from scratch again, even if there's an unexpected shutdown. What version of LW are you using?

Hannushi January 15th, 2007 03:35 AM

Good morning,

I am using version 4.12.6 and Java 1.5.0_09

I found the same problem with LW this morning. I left it open before sleeping at 5am and by 10.30am it had repeated that error so it took longer for the error to kick in this time which is why I thought it worked. I will try the same method of solution again soon. I don't have an anti virus on my pc at the moment and I think I have recently received a virus which might also be causing the problem. I think I have an error because 1) I can't access task manager through ctrl+alt+delete and 2) I unzipped a file in a folder recently when I think the error occured for the first time and now every time I open that folder it has about 2000 zip folders in it even after deleting them, i find them there again a little later.

I'm updating my McAfee antiVirus but the framework service is returning an error. When I have delt with this (soon), I'll try your solution again then let you know on the updated situation. Thanks for your interest in my probs.

birdy January 15th, 2007 03:39 PM

Sounds like you do have a virus. Check out the sticky below. In point 5, there's a link to Norbiesworld...he offers free computer help. I'd suggest you go there & register, then follow the steps for computer help (post a HijackThis log in the Viruses & Trojans section).

WARNING: Viruses on the network you should be aware of

anyone one here

Hi guys, i've got the same problem.

No viruses as far as all my anti-virus and adaware programs are concerned, and the issue has only occured since i started using :
Limewire - 4.13.0 with
Java - 1.5.0_10

I can have limewire running in the background downloading while doing other things on my machine, and its fine. But if i leave the computer alone completely, i get limewire silently crashing. Usualy when i return, the programe has closed, but the limewire icon is still in icons in the right of my taskbar. When i click or run the mouse over the icon, it disappears.

Going by the amount of time left to go on my download, it appear to be crashing within an hour.

I have tried taking my computer back to the login screen, minimising everything, keeping everything except limewire minimised and tried keeping other memory intensive programmes running or shut down as well. I still have the same problem.

There is no record of a crash or programme problems in my computer logs.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers
Nic

NicNac January 24th, 2007 02:58 PM

i just had an idea

I'm wondering whether screen savers might have anything to do wth it.. mine goes off after 15mins (i'll turn it off and see what happens)

To the other people who have had the same problem.. do you have a screen saver running?

Just a thought...

Cheers
Nic
