CPU usage issues

Limewire appears to be eating 95-100% of my CPU time, from the moment it starts, and about 5-10 minutes after running the application, it has an internal error and then refuses to shut down unless I shut the process down manually. I am using the free version I downloaded from the link located at www.limewire.com [EDIT]It is version 4.12.6[/EDIT] and am running an odd version of Windows (XP Pro x64).

I was simply wondering if this is an operating system incompatibility error, and is common with other users running the same OS, and if there is a possible fix for it.

Thanks,
Pyro109

It sounds like possably a corrupt java download, &/or L/W Prefs folder prob
First! close L/W completly, then Go, START/My Computer/local disc C:/ Documents & settings/Your User Name/Application Data/ Now Delete the LimeWire Folder.
Now! Go to, START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs, now completely remove all versions of java.
Now! Use this Link to get (jre1.5.0 09) Use the off line installer NOT the (recormended) one, http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Hm..... I was running the sixth Java update, not the newest 10th.... And that fix cut down a lot of the CPU usage.... but now it's jumping around erratically from about 5% to about 75%.... This certainly is the most odd thing I've ever seen a program do. Thank you for your help, though!

Edit: Nevermind all that, it's back to the 100% useage and internal errors.

I dont know XP Pro x64 but its sounding more like a trojan, Have you swept your system for problems Spybot search n Destroy is a good free program

ALSO Make a new thread (LimeWire/ XP Pro x64 Compatable ? Help.)

Check your system using any of these programs (I reckon using all of them):
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/(free)

http://www.grisoft.com(good free AVG)

http://www.ewido.com(>>now called AVG Anti Spyware<< free 30 day trial -the best in my opinion)

http://www.ccleaner.com/download/(free)

Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE)

If you can't get rid of it go here and get some free computer help:

Hm, well, that was my first thoughts, and I ran spybot, Windows Defender, and Avast Antivirus. (Most of those programs are, sadly, not x64 compatable), and there is no problem with any program but Limewire. I will make the topic though. Thank you.

for Java based infections directly scan Root:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data....its a hidden folder so you have to enable view of hidden folders to see it....

You could try steps 2-5 here Fixes for Limewire

You could also see if the beta makes any difference http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml
For some people changing version can sometimes fix odd issues.
LW is 64 bit capable. Has been for about a year I think.

Thanks, everybody!

Well, it seems like switching to the Beta version solved my problems, except around startup, but it drops down after a couple minutes, so I can handle that. Does seem kinda odd what it was doing, though.

mickjapa108 December 26th, 2006 02:17 AM

Your CPU will be High at first, how long will depend on how large your Shared
folder/s takes to load then it should drop to 5 to10% .
Just a thought, But Did you scan your com in safe mode if not do it anyway.
Peace.

Pyro109 December 26th, 2006 02:19 AM

Yeah, I ran the scans in safe mode, and it took about four hours or so in total. (Scanned every file on the computer throughly)
