what is a avi file and how do i open them up?
 
hey gang, i've had no luck in opening files with ...avi. what are these? and why do i get an error about how it was compressed and windows can't open it. please answer in laymen terms.

avi is a video format. Are you trying to play the file with WMP? Maybe you need codecs for the player. Have a look below for links to codec packs, I've used the XP Codec Pack for WMP. Or, you could try VLC player. It's free & has codecs already installed;) You'll find a link for download, plus more info below.
