Confused LW 4.18.8 freezes, can't kill proces!!!

Hello everybody

Do I have this weird problem running Limewire 4.18.8!

I used to dl with LW a few years ago, but stopped using it. Now I decided to install again.

When I start LW it launches, connects and I can start searching for anything I like. Until this point everything goes well.

When I start a download, it starts with good speed, but afere 1-5 min running the speed drops to zero. Limewire seems to be working OK but doesn't dl.

So I shut it down, and attempt to restart. Then I notice LW is still running as proces in taskmanager. I can try whatever I like, but LW doesn't shutdown at all. Even with taskkill it says all goes well, but it remains in the task list.

Running W7 x64 on AMD LE1640 single core / 3GB/800(64 bit) / 2,5TB

Things I tried:

- Using LW 4.18.8 I still had on CD from my old backup.
LW freezes in mem. Have to reboot PC.

- Using the newest LW from the forum here, with standalone java 6.20 installer used. Also used the gnutella.net from the forum.
LW freezes in the mem. Have to reboot PC.

- Using latest Frostwire same way...
FW freezes in mem... reboot...

- Using a VM with winXP x86 along with java 5.22 (standalone download from oldversion) and LW4.18.8
LW freezes in mem. Cannot shutdown VM as well! Have to reboot PC again...

- Would try W98 in VM, but can't connect it to internet, so bummer...

Is it my machine??? Is it java??? Seems like lots of users use LW succesfully here... I'm startiong to believe my machine does something wrong :S I couldn't find the solution on the forum, so I decided to create a new post.

Please... Anyone...

H E L P ! ! !

Next thing to try is deleting your LW preferences folder. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/window...ng-should.html see post at bottom of thread about how to save your previous incomplete downloads.
Also try changing compatibility mode (a few options to try) & Run as Administrator, points #5 & 6 in above link. Can also make Java run in Admin mode. Search computer for Java.exe, right-click & choose Run as Administrator. This might help (is mandatory for Windows 7.)
(All the above tips need to be done whilst LW is closed.)

Do you still have incomplete files from long ago? Might actually be wise to remove/delete these if too many it may be making LW struggle.
Do you have lots of files sharing? Might be wise to start with less initially until your LW starts to run properly.

I presently share 6-10 thousand files, have shared up to 16 thousand with LW 4.

It sounds like you are using LW Pro? Or LW Basic?
If you wish to remain with LW 4 (many do), then you could perhaps try downgrading to LW 4.16.7. But there is a trick to do this properly to retain your previous downloads history. Else you might try the LW 5 series, such as LimeWire Pirate Edition (LPE.)

From what I can see from your description, Java is struggling with memory. This suggests settings that are causing a high memory use-age. Memory use-age problem might really be due to various things.
