Opening problem

Theres a previous post on the same topic, but didnt solve my problem.

I did a spyware scan, and limewire came up twice. One was limewire.exe, and I dont know what the other one was. I had my computer set to delete automaticly, so they were both deleted. Now, whenever I click the limewire icon, It dosnt load. I've tried re-installing limewire, turning off the spyware scan for a second, but nothing seems to work. Im usually computer smart, but this ones got me stumped. Any ideas?

Hi Nebuaka

Follow these instructions exactly.
So, you need to Go, Start/All Programs/LimeWire n Uninstall all L/W versions.

Now Go to, Start/Search/click on all files n folders/more advanced options/
& make sure, case sensitive, is not ticked. (all other boxes should be ticked)
Now!!, Put limewire in box, (all or part of file name) & click search.
Delete everything found, including Prefetch folder, (I mean everything)
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now! Go to,
START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs,
now completely remove all versions of java.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

mickjapa108 May 14th, 2007 01:26 AM

Arvn4u Hi.
You have a worm I believe, so follow this exactly

> First remove Limewire(Start>All Programs>Limewire>Uninstall)
> Download "Brute force Uninstaller" to Desktop
>To download http://www.merijn.org/files/bfu.zip
>Right click the "BFU folder" on your desktop, and choose "Extract All"
>Click "next"
>In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
>Click "Browse"
>Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
>Click on "Local Disk (C: ) "
>Click "Make New Folder"
>Type in BFU
>Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".

Then,
>Download Alcra PLUS Remover at this link
>Right click link underneith and select "save target as" Save it in the same folder you made earlier "(c:\BFU)".
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/alcanshorty.bfu

>Reboot to "safe mode"
>Go to "My Computer>C:/BFU folder".
>go to "BFU.exe"
>Select "folder icon"(top right)
>click "alcanchorty.bfu"
>Press "Execute" and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
>Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press "OK".
>Press "exit" to terminate the BFU program.
>Reboot into normal windows.

IT'S GONE

It is not absolutely necessary to uninstall Limewire or go into safe mode.It just makes it easier to do with Limewire not popping up all the time
Tell us how you get on.
Peace.

mickjapa108 Hi,

I have just followed the steps completely however LW still does not open

mickjapa108 May 15th, 2007 04:18 AM

Arvn4u Hi
Sorry for the late reply, very busy.
Download AVG free AV program from this blue link, Update it first, then Boot into safe mode & scan, (remove all it finds)
AVG Free Advisor: AVG Anti-Virus Free

If that don't fix it, Try this clean reinstall.

Follow these instructions exactly.
So, you need to Go, Start/All Programs/LimeWire n Uninstall all L/W versions.
Do Not Uninstall From Change or Remove Programs.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now Go to, Start/Search/click on all files n folders/more advanced options/
& make sure, case sensitive, is not ticked. (all other boxes should be ticked)

Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

now completely remove all versions of java.

Arvn4u May 16th, 2007 08:39 AM

Hi sorry to report but tried all 3 and no go

mickjapa108 May 16th, 2007 08:48 AM

What!! they could'nt fix it or found nothing.

muhctekdano May 16th, 2007 11:36 AM

I had the same problem.

Control Panel...System...Advanced...Settings...Data Execution Prevention

Add Windows Explorer to the list and check it.

You can read about DEP while you're in that window. It's supposed to protect your computer from viruses wreaking havoc. It just annoyed me, though, and I don't think I've had any problems since I made this change (it's been quite some time).

Hope this helps

Perhaps you could reinstall your Java? There's a link in this post:

Good Luck

Reinstall Java & use this version.
Java SE Downloads - Previous Release - JDK 5
Use the JRE offline installer, remove your current version of Java before installing this one.

If that doesn't fix things, try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 below (also point 2, if you've used much older versions of LW in the past...there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things;)

If it's still not opening, try changing compatibility (point 5 in the 'fixes' thread).

Or reinstall LW & make sure to use the offline installer (not the recommended one). But if you're going to reinstall LW, make sure you've reinstalled Java first.

No, I'm just too lazy to write a decent response! :coffee1:
