What version of Java are you using? Try installing this version. Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java version before you install this one.

That sounds really hard to do, i will see if i can work it out, thanks for that.

RBPme June 11th, 2007 09:04 AM

hello , is Birdy still about?
I have found JRE 5.0 update11
and Java2 Runtime standard edition v1.3.1_01
and Java (TM)SE Runtime Enviroment 6update.
or near to those titles.
which do i get rid of ? and what is the

I am having the exact same problem. LW has closed on me 5 times today. I looked at the Java in the control panel but could not find what version I have. How can I find that information?

I just looked under add/remove programs and it says I have Java SE runtime environment 6 update 1 which was what someone here told me to install several months ago. What else could be wrong?

RBPme,
Remove all of those Java versions & start again. Just install the Java version that I linked to before.
When you click on the blue Java link, then click on 'Download JRE'...you'll be sent to the download page. There, you'll see that there are 2 Windows versions of JRE available for download. The top one is the offline installation (15.80 MB), the bottom one is the online installation (245.76 KB).

Attachment 3571

Put a tick next to the offline installation & download that one. Don't forget to accept the license agreement first;)

cosmosis66,
A few people have had trouble with Java 1.6.0_01, try the other Java version that I've linked to in post #2. Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java version before you install this one.

so the thing to do is not to update Java that is telling me there is an update available?:super:Cheers

Java update the cause of Limewire fault

Tests have proven a bug into the Java runtime environment V6.1 for Windows XP users.

Users will experience the Limewire application crashing shortly after it loads.

I have emailed Sun Microsystems, the makers of Java to advise of the bug.

In the meantime 'Birdy' is correct. go to the control panel & Uninstall Java Runtime v6.1

Users can download the older version 5.11 which runs the Limewire app no probs.
Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

I truly hope this is a bug & not Sun caving into copyright holders - by trying to strangle a 3rd party filesharing application.

I'm eagerly expecting Java RE 6.2 to see if the bug gets fixed.

What a pain in the ****.....

RBPme June 14th, 2007 12:54 AM

Thanks for that tonytau , the Limewire problem is cured, but there are strange things going on. I lost all access to my different programs last night, but got them back by rebooting. I have noted a large amount of Java 'Bits' in my zone alarm program section ,many more than there was before,is this normal?
when i deleted the old versions there were some 'Bits' that would not delete, and they were listed and an instruction came up that said "could not be deleted, you will have to delete manually". not knowing how, i did not. Do you think this is causing problems?
thanks for help:confused:, just as i minimised this window a note saying "a runtime error has occured do you wish to debug"? anything to do with java? i would not know how to de bug but it may help?
lots of questions sorry

tonytau June 15th, 2007 04:35 AM

blow it away

Uninstall Java from control panel.

Goto program files = c:\program files

Delete the Java folder = c:\program files\java

double click 'internet options' in the control panel.

Scroll down to 'Microsoft VM'

untick "java console enabled" & "Java logging enabled"

Tick "JIT compiler for virtual machine"

Click OK

Restart Machine

Hope this helps

ignore update

Java 6 update 1 has been proven to be the fault.

Suggest wait until 6.2 is released

cosmosis66 Hi

Follow these instructions exactly.
So, you need to Go, Start/All Programs/LimeWire n Uninstall all L/W versions.
Do Not Uninstall From Change or Remove Programs.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW
Now Go to, Start/Search/click on all files n folders/more advanced options/
& make sure, case sensitive, is not ticked. (all other boxes should be ticked)

Now!!, Put limewire in box, (all or part of file name) & click search.
Delete everything found, including Prefetch folder, (I mean everything)
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.
Now! Go to,
START/Set Program Access/Change or Remove Programs,
now completely remove all versions of java.
Re BOOT Your computer NOW.

Now! Use this Blue Link to get "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 12" Use the off line installer, NOT the (recommended) one, 4th one down.
Java SE Downloads - Previous Release - JDK 5
When Download is completed.
Disconnect from internet, close ALL apps n reinstall java.

Now!! Use this link to download latest L/W version using the off line installer
LimeWire

can someone help me i need help getting a licence cause it wont let me download song and being a new user dont know where to get one from

mickjapa108 June 15th, 2007 07:23 AM

Hi Benny J

It could be the License warning thing.
Just have a look,
Go, Tools/Options/Searching/Basic, it says, "Show License Warning"
Untick the box if you don't want to filter out copyright Files in search results.

This option is enabled at setup, The choice is your decision.
Do a test to see if search results improve.
You can reverse this change at any time, the choice is yours.

P.S. A file that requires a license, is protected so if you obtain a license, that file cannot be shared.
So don't put those files in your shared folder.
That will cause more frustration to others as they play only silence.

Try downloading & using the VLC media player (Its Free) & recommended by us here
at the limewire forums. VLC player has most all of the codec's built into the player &
plays above average quality for music & excellent quality for video files, (It plays most everything)

If you wish, VLC player can be set as the default player for your computer, to do this
In Limewire Library, highlight a file mp3, avi or whatever you wish then click on
explore, in the bottom left corner.
This will take you to the shared folder outside of Limewire, right click on a file,
choose, open with, highlight VLC player, then tick the box to always use this program
to open this type of file. Repeat this action to include all the file types you wish VLC
to be the default player.
USE THIS LINK IN BLUE (download from the nearest mirror site to you)
Your servant.
Peace.

Hello,

I'm having a problem with limewire shutting down whenever I try to access the library. The computer is running XP and the lime wire version is 4.12.11. Java version 1.6.0.

I looked into the program files and found this log.

Try using this version of Java. Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java version before you install this one;)
Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

If that doesn't help, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

Previous Flt only affects XP users

Ongoing tests have revealed the premature termination of Limewire problem when using JRE 6.1 - only affects XP users.

Tests in the Windows Vista environment have not revealed any runtime problems.

It seems the new version of JRE 6.1 has cross-platform issues. Seems stable in Vista, crashes in XP.

Previous advice to affected XP users remains. Uninstall JRE6.1 & download JRE5.11

XP users will need to wait until Sun corrects cross-platform issues in a future release eg JRE 6.2

I reinstalled JRE 6.1 and the program is working fine now.

Thanks for the help.

i've deleted all previous versions of my java and installed the 5.11 one and it still closes everytime i open it. help!

birdy June 27th, 2007 09:05 PM

KRS,

Try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).

Otherwise, try changing compatibility (point 5 in the 'fixes' thread).

KRS June 28th, 2007 10:28 AM

^well i can't really do that because when i do a file search i get that message that says "windows explorer has encountered an error please send or not send the problem blah blah"

Screen saver seems to be my issue!!!

Hello one and all,

This maybe completely unrelated to the issues other are facing in this thread, but my issue seems to be exactly the same with a completely different fix.

I found as some of you also found that while working on the machine Limewire runs normally but afetr you leave the machie and in my case the aquazone (tropical fish) screen saver comes on, LW crashes.

I changed from this fancy scren saver to a windows (flower box) and now Limewire does not crash at all.

Like I say, your Java runtime version maybe the cause of your issues, but I have the 'bugged' version and LW 4.12.15 and the screensaver certainly sorted my problems out.

Cheers

Hi,

I updated my limewire last week to 4.14.10, and now at the end of the startup screen, it just dissapears. I have read all the posts i can find relating to this or similar, and have followed their instructions, ie. uninstalling limewire, including explorer search and deleting all related preferences folders etc. I have also then reversed my java install to 5 update 11, deleting all other versions first (including latest v6). Then reinstalling limewire (all using offline installers) but the problem does not go away.
I noticed in mickjapa108 post that java 5 update 12 is recommended, although the link goes to update 13, and I cant find update 12. Do you think this is relevant or should my system work anyway with the update 5 as recommended in lots of other posts ?
any suggestions ?
eg.like limewire, does java need any further deleting of remaining hidden/system files/folders when removing previous versions after using 'add/remove programs' to do the standard removal ?

on first startup of limewire after removing the preferences folder, the wizard runs as it should asking me to select my preferences such as connection type etc, but on completion, the remaining startup window just completes ie. 'loading user interface, loading core components .....etc etc' to 100% and then disappears. after the first, then subsequent starts bring up the loading screen again, which dissapears at the end, with nothing running, nothing in sys tray, nothing in 'processes' in task manager.

any help would be greatly appreciated,
many thanks.

cosmosis66 Hi

Right click on the LW icon on your desktop > properties > compatibility. If you're using XP, try running in compatibility mode for Windows 2000 or NT.
If you're using Vista, try compatibility mode for XP.

Do you have Alcohol software installed? If so, check out the thread below & see if that helps.

Hi thanks for your reply. Sorry, forgot to mention I had already tried the compatibility back to win2000 (running XP pro) and still same. I have also now tried frostwire which I saw suggested on another thread, and that has exactly the same problem as limewire.
I checked my two daughters pcs last night and they both have latest limewire and latest java, one on vista home on a new laptop, one on xp pro on an old laptop, but both working fine so I'm really stumped now !!!!
help !

wange November 13th, 2007 04:49 AM

Sorry, also do not have alcohol software installed. I had seen that thread and couldn't find any reference to the software or filenames on my laptop.
thanks.

Important thing is that you have to check how many Java versions do you have. You must have only ONE version of it, not 2 or more.
To be able to see how many Java versions you have, go to Control Panel then onto Add/Remove programs. Scroll down and check how many Java versions you have. I suggest to uninstall all of the Java versions, or everything that begins with Java. After that go to Java official site and download latest offline version of Java. Install it and hope it will work.

There are lot of conflicts made with this new LW between different versions of Java. Try this and reply what happened.
Thx :)

wange November 14th, 2007 01:37 AM

Hi thanks for your interest.
I did uninstall all java versions using add/remove programs (see post #24 above) before installing latest version. I also kept on uninstalling each time before trying the older versions eg 1.5_11 (12 & 13) but still the same. have also just tried starting via limewire.jar as suggested on limewire.org forum but still same.
??????????

mickjapa108 November 14th, 2007 04:43 AM

Hi wange
sorry about the confusion 1.5.\10,11,12 & 13 are OK to use even JRE 6 without any updates is fine, the prob starts with JRE 6 u 1.
If you have installed newer java versions, you should do a search of your COM for old java files including Prefech files & delete them before reinstall, careful you don't remove the installer files, Put your old installers into a new folder on a drive where you will not delete by accident , if this fails to improve things Post your details, I will see what I can do to help.
Peace
