fast help needed pls (reinstall LW)

after having been with limewire for almost 2 years, this is my first post lol if not for a problem.. but i really need help because...

i unintentionally uninstalled lw and after groping for answers online to get it back, i installed java 1.4 jre and deleted the lw preferences folder :shoot:.. it all started when i changed my browser from ie to firefox, and can't connect due to firewall.. but i can't find a way to re-install lw, so i can't test it at all.. don't even know if i deleted a wrong file.. my subscription is nearing expiration too..

by the way, i'm not a techie.. help, anybody?..

If you bought Pro, you can follow the link to your personal download page. If you haven't saved that link, go here & enter the email address that you used to buy Pro.
http://sales.limewire.com/support/pro_lookup.php

Before you install Pro, I'd reinstall Java & use this version (1.4 is very old). Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java verison before you install this one;)

Once you've installed the Java, then reinstall LW:)

I'm a bit confused as to why you'd reinstall that old Java. Did you buy Pro from Lime Wire » Official Website & Free Download « for $18.88? Your Pro payment entitles you to up to 6 months of free updates & email support.

Give Us Your System Details

Please give us these details so we can better help you. Also the latest version of limewire doesn't support java 1.4, so that may be your problem.

jomari June 18th, 2007 10:30 PM

thanks guys.. i've read somewhere about installing java 1.5 or 1.4 (somebody recommended choosing this because it's a bit user-friendly?) and delete lw preferences folder..

birdy, the package i bought less than 2 yrs ago was the $39 for 2 yr subscription (not the lw pro).. so i can't use the link u gave me.. is there any other way to trace this?

garbagefan2, i did my best to get these set up info: :-)
- Windows XP
- using Norton and Windows firewall; plus maybe that from Firefox?
- not sure bout ram and space available but sure is ample
- cable internet
- Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI modem located at PCI Slot 6 (PCI bus 5, device 5, function 0)
- connecting from home thru Cox in US
- http://www3.limewire.com:6346 "your test worked' ok
- no sharing of lw subscription
- brick wall on blue world icon on lefthand corner

for the meantime, i'll download the java... will await your replies.. thanks much.

Hi Jomari,

Unfortunately you were scammed. LW basic is absolutely free & you can download a clean version from the official site here.
Lime Wire » Download LimeWire
There's not much you can do after nearly 2 years...just put it down to experience & in future, only use the official site;)

After you've installed the Java JRE, then install LW. Use the offline installer...when you go to the LW download page & click to download, a box will pop up asking you if you want to save the file. Click cancel & then you'll see an option to download with the offline installer...do that:)

I'm a bit confused, do you have any version of LW installed now?

Don't use Norton firewall & Windows firewall together. Configure Norton to allow LW & disable the Windows firewall. Firefox doesn't have a firewall.

That modem sounds like an internal one! Do you have an external modem or router?

jomari June 19th, 2007 12:47 AM

i was scammed?:shoot:.. geez i've been downloading from lw since july 2005 and there was no such $39 per 2 yr subscription?.. this was the version i had before i uninstalled it - LimeWire 4.9.4..

i don't know where to check if i have an external modem.. sorry!..

ok i still have some lw files left in my system that i guess i have to delete completely before i install the 'real' lw lol.. i'll see how it works then maybe upgrade to pro.. see what happens from there..

will also configure my firewall settings.. thanks birdy.

jomari June 20th, 2007 12:10 AM

i did the easiest thing.. purchased lw pro.. gosh i didn't realize everything is so faster now.. it worked quite well.. quite happy with what i paid for.. but that was just yesterday. :-(

today i was trying to open (double click) the lw icon, but it won't open.. i mean, nothing happens.. what seems to be wrong this time?

i did notice there was a brick wall in front of the blue world icon on the lower lefthand corner yesterday, and was a little bit surprised of a turbo charged connection beside it despite the firewall..

help again?

birdy June 20th, 2007 02:22 AM

Delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

Also try changing compatibility (point 5 in that 'fixes' thread);)

What version of Java are you using (control panel > add remove programs will tell you)? Try this version. Use the JRE offline installer & remove your current Java version before you install this one.

If you want some help with that brick wall, can you post your details please?

jomari June 20th, 2007 12:14 PM

birdy, i believe i've deleted the preferences folder already (as in my first post above).. although i see in this folder "C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe" some other files that were last modified 1/29/07 - application (120kb), executable jar file (7mb), application extension (40kb).. i installed the new lw pro just 6/19/07..

i also have downloaded the java J2SE 5.0 as you instructed, and have changed compatibilty to Windows 2000 (my OS is windows xp)..

now for my system details:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) - Windows XP version 2002 service pack 2
2. What firewalls you have? - Windows and Norton
3. How much ram? - 512mb
4. Hard Disk space available? - 132gb
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) - cable
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? -
Intel(R) 537EP V9x DF PCI modem located at PCI Slot 6 (PCI bus 5, device 5, function 0); i don't know where to find router data..
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.)? - from home
8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. -
i've downloaded J2SE 5 update 11 (after i deleted the old version)
9. Who is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? - Cox
10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there? - ok
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. -
sharing internet cable connection with another home computer, but each functions individually (not networked)

12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. -
i guess it's my 2nd, after i was scammed the 1st time..
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? - yes (on the 1st day only, because i can't open lw now)
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...1&d=1158099342
14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled? - Intel(R) PRO/100 VE network connection; D-Link Airplus G DWL-G510 wireless pci adapter (rev.B) (i don't know if this makes sense )
15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)? Some people might not be aware that their security suite includes a firewall :) - norton
16. What country are you living in? Sometimes there are ISPs with the same name in more than one country (eg Clearwire in the USA & also in Ireland). USA

birdy June 20th, 2007 05:07 PM

Sorry, I should've been a bit clearer & said "delete the preferences folder again":p
It's a good idea to delete that folder after updating or upgrading LW;)

You could also try NT compatibility (even though you have XP) & running as administrator...see that 'fixes' thread in my previous post.

Are you running Windows & Norton firewalls together? Don't...they'll conflict with each other. Turn off the Windows firewall & configure Norton to allow LW.
PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall

You're using a wireless adapter...what's the brand & model of the modem/router that you're wirelessly connecting to?

jomari June 20th, 2007 11:06 PM

birdy i believe i've configured windows firewall off and norton allowing lw already.. no luck..

how do i look for the specs of my modem/router?

birdy June 21st, 2007 12:43 AM

Try reinstalling LW again. You could also try the Beta version & see if that opens (you can download the Beta from your personal download page).

The wireless adapter that you're using doesn't have a firewall. But if you're connecting wirelessly through a router or modem-router, that might have an internal firewall. To check, go to the other computer & see what devices are plugged into that. Maybe another D-Link device?

yes birdy, this pc is connected wirelessly with another D-link device, because cox's cable internet connection is wired from that remote pc.. thanks for bearing with me birdy.. but as another favor, can you tell me how and where i could find that firewall culprit?.. is my d-link a router?.. the remote d-link is a modem-router?.. :o

birdy June 21st, 2007 01:08 AM

The D-Link Airplus G DWL-G510 is a wireless adapter & it allows your computer to connect to a modem/router for access to the internet. The adapter that you have in your PC doesn't have a firewall so that's not the culprit.

Is the other computer with the other D-Link device in another room? Can you go & have a look at it & give me the model number? Then I'll be able to tell you if it has an internal firewall.

Did you try reinstalling LW & if so, does it open now?

jomari June 21st, 2007 01:33 PM

tried reinstalling the lw beta version, still no luck.. but before i did that, i didn't delete the lw pro.. if a window asked me there's an old version, i just clicked 'ignore'.. wonder if i did the right thing, or should i delete all lw files before reinstalling?..

the modem from the other computer (in another room) is Motorola SM56 speakerphone modem..

what do you think?..

birdy June 21st, 2007 07:03 PM

You should let the installer remove the previous LW version. Go to start > all programs > limewire & use the uninstall option from there to remove the LW versions you have now. Don't try to uninstall through add/remove programs, that will cause problems.

Now reinstall LW.

That modem sounds like an internal modem (inside the computer). Are there any external devices (outside the computer)?

jomari June 21st, 2007 08:48 PM

i uninstalled lw already, tried to reinstall but can't because there's a running version accordingly.... umm birdy, i still saw some program files in my hard disk (executable jar files, etc about 21MB size) that i can't delete because it says lw is running, but i don't see any lw software open or running in my system..

the motorola modem is located outside the computer, so i guess it's an external modem..

do you think things will be normal if i use internet explorer browser instead?

jomari June 22nd, 2007 11:14 AM

birdy, have u given up on me? :-(

birdy June 22nd, 2007 08:18 PM

Open task manager, click on the Processes tab & see if there's a LW process running. If there is, end the process. Did you uninstall LW via add/remove programs?

Otherwise, try the advice here to remove the files.
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/275825-post7.html
If you still can't delete the leftover LW files, try rebooting into safe mode & see if they'll delete.
Safe mode

As I said, I can only find info about an internal modem with that model number. What's the model of the other D-Link device...you never did say.

I use Firefox & it has no negative effect on LW but if you want to try going back to IE...go for it. See if there's any change.

jomari June 23rd, 2007 10:08 PM

it's working perfectly now.. :yahoo: thanks birdy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
