2.1.1 on 2K Server sp2 - won't install

Okay, downloaded and tried to install 2.1.1. The installer starts, downloads a file, halts for a moment, and then says:

"18: Internal Error in Windows Installer."

I OK that message, and then this one comes up:

"This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Installer service.
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_is6B\LimeWire 2.1.1.msi"

I'm running 2000 Server, service pack 2, which was the latest as of last week. WindowsUpdate.com doesn't offer any newer updates.

Any ideas?

2.1.2 beta didn't work either

Update: Just downloaded the 2.1.2 beta; it had the same problem.

Jake Robb January 16th, 2002 11:45 AM

no good

The FAQ only suggests that I be logged in as an administrator...

...which I am.

Any other ideas?

I would recommend uninstalling all previous LimeWire versions in the Control Panels>>Add/Remove Programs window, and then restarting your computer. Once you have done this, try running the installer again.

There is also a detailed FAQ item in our FAQ at:

Still Won't Install

I've done the following:

- Set permissions per the instructions via dcomcnfg.exe
- Separately downloaded and installed isscript.msi

Now, rather than get a 1628 error (Windows 2000) I get a 1608 error. Will the Pro version actually install in Windows 2000? I have my doubts.....

Win 2000 Prop
5.0.2195
SP 2

still no go

I've never had LimeWire installed on this system before -- so there's nothing to uninstall.

I guess I'll just have to wait for either service pack 3 or a new version of LimeWire.

We all run Windows 2000 over here at LimeWire, and the installer works fine here.

Have you uninstalled all previous LimeWire versions and restarted your machine before running the new installer, marksj? Restarting has frequently solved install problems for many users.

Sorry for the frustration!

2k SERVER.

I think it may be a problem with 2k SERVER.

Don't ask me why I'm using it...

marksj-

It sounds to me like there was a problem with the setting of the dcom permissions. Error 1628 doesn't have anything to with dcom permissions -- it usually means that you have another copy of the same version of LimeWire already installed. It sounds like changing the dcom permissions on your machine set them to values that produced the 1608 error to me. I would have another look at it myself.

Thanks.

As far as win2K server, what error are you getting?

Jake Robb January 18th, 2002 07:26 AM

I already said...

The error messages it gave are in the first post in this thread. :-)

Jake-

Sorry about that! It sounds like there might be an issue with win2K server, as you said. The documented error for that code is simply "Installer is not responding," which is not particularly helpful.

Unfortunately, I don't have any fix for this problem right now, although I will be sure to post if I find one. Our apologies!

Jake Robb January 18th, 2002 07:51 AM

can I help?

This is a development machine... I've got a full set of tools here. Let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Jake-

Actually, there is one thing you could do. Try running the installer from the command line with verbose debugging output. The syntax is like this, just as an example:

LimeWireWin.exe /verbose"C:\IS.log"

If you could then send me the IS.log file as an attachment to afisk@limepeer.com, that would be great. It might not say anything, but it could be useful.

Thanks very much.

done

Okay, I sent the message. Just for the sake of documenting this, though:

=== Verbose logging started: 1/18/2002 11:22:44 Build type: SHIP UNICODE 1.11.2405.00 Calling process:
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\Driver\7\INTEL3~\IDr iver.exe ===
This installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service. You must install a Windows service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer service.
C:\WINNT\TEMP\_isC9\LimeWire 2.1.1.msi
=== Verbose logging stopped: 1/18/2002 11:22:44 ===

I don't see anything helpful in there...

Refund?

I just can't install the Pro version....I've never had a previous version installed on this computer at all. I have all of the appropriate permissions on the machine and I'm not willing to download the free version with the, um, extras....

Have you tried restarting before running the installer? If that doesn't work, can you try running it from the command line in the manner that I outlined in my earlier post? That would give us some useful debugging information.

We should be able to get it working on 2000 in some manner. Sorry for the problems.

Any Help For Win 2000

Has anyone been able to get the full version to load in Win 2K? I've tried everything, but still no luck. Thanks!
