Exclamation Limewire instantly crashes. Certain Java version required?

Just wondering because every time I open Lime wire, I get the loading screen and then the GUI appears for about .5 - 1 second, and then it crashes instantly (I realize there have been a few posts on this issue happening but I have found only 1 thread where the person posting says the problem was resolved and their solution did not work for me).

Let me tell you my setup and what I've done so far:

Windows XP sp2
Pentium D 830 3.0 Mhz CPU
2 GB pc6400 RAM
Windows Firewall (with Limewire added to exception list)
Symantec Antivirus 10.0.1.1000
35+ GB available on system drive (100+ GB available over all hard drives)
Cable internet (6 MBPS down) from my house in US (Cox Communications)
Limewire 4.14.8
Java 6 update 2
Limewire test page worked
Have used Limewire for 2 years or so

I have used Limewire with no problems until about a few weeks ago. All of a sudden this problem started. I have uninstalled and reinstalled LW SEVERAL times, when that didn't work I decided to uninstall ALL java versions I had installed (which was several versions, probably about 6-8). Once all of them were completely uninstalled, I installed java 6 update 2 from the java.com website. I have tried doing a search on my PC for all files and folders named Limewire, and then deleting them, I then proceeded to do the same in the registry. After removing all traces of Limewire files and folders both on my system drive (where it was installed), and in the registry, when I attempt to reinstall it (the install seems to lay down without any problems, btw), still the same behavior, the program loads, and then instantly when the GUI appears, the program crashes. I get no errors or warnings at any time, and nothing appears in ANY of the event logs.

I am at an absolute loss on what could fix the problem outside of reinstalling Windows. Does ANYONE know how to fix this?

And according to Limewire's error log (which I just a second ago realized existed) the problem is with java:

# An unexpected error has been detected by Java Runtime Environment:
#
# EXCEPTION_FLT_STACK_CHECK (0xc0000092) at pc=0x010ccea9, pid=3328, tid=2112
#
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (1.6.0_02-b06 mixed mode, sharing)
# Problematic frame:
# v ~RuntimeStub::resolve_opt_virtual_call

I'm definitely running the most updated java version and saw someone else had posted that LW may have problems with the new version and you may need to try installing java 5 update 11, which I have done, and still have same problem...

I'm so irritated I could puke...

Some people have had trouble with the latest Java updates. Try this version instead. Use the JRE offline installer & remove any other Java versions before installing this one (it's easy enough to reinstall a later Java if it turns out that Java's the problem).
Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11

Next, delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here. Your search for all limewire files & folders may have already done the same thing, but try this anyway - just in case your search didn't include hidden files & folders.
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options (including days to keep incomplete files), you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

If that doesn't help, try reinstalling the latest version of LW (4.14.8) again & make sure to use the offline installer (when you click to download LW & the download box pops up, cancel that & you'll see the option to use the offline installer).
Lime Wire » Download LimeWire

If all that fails, right click on the LW desktop icon > properties > compatibility & run in compatibility mode for Win 2000 or NT.

Sorry to repeat things that you've already tried, but these fixes are the ones that have worked for other people.

Yep. You were right. For some reason the Java 6 update 2 runtime causes an exception in Limewire. Once I uninstalled it, leaving java 5 update 11 by itself, that seemed to resolve the issue.

Holy crap, that's TERRIBLE. I really hope the Limewire developers can fix this issue soon, because I really don't want to be limited to an older java version only so I can run LW. That has GOT to be fixed.

Anyways, thanks alot, Birdy!
