1st time and i need help playing files!!!!
 

When i try to preview a movie that i'm downloading it won't work. All it says is.... "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file". What am i doing wrong. The file type i'm trying to play is DVDRip.avi,that's what it has after the name of the movie. Can someone send me any info that will help.

Forgot to mention that I use windows xp.

You need some codecs for the files to play properly.

For WMP try K-Litecode Codec Pack or XP Codec Pack 2.0.6.

Or try using VLC media player, it has the codecs built in and will play most file types. It's a good player to have around as a backup.

Additional (Hopefully useful) information:

Before d/loading videos, check them with Bitzi Web Lookup. It'll help you sort out the good ones. While on the Bitzi site, search for the file there and use the magnet link to start the d/load in limewire. Then search for it again in LW to help find some sources for the file.
Also preview the file when it gets to 10-15% to check that it's what the title says and not mislabeled porn.

all these different programs seem to indicate that the file type is not recognized. I have been downloading alot of AVI files. The overall download would be 55GBs made up of about 20 files of about 5 AVIs each. Are none of the files usable until the entire download is finished ? Since they would not all finish at one time, how do I know which ones are done and which ones are not? If say all but two of the AVIs are eventually downloaded, but Limewire cannot find the last two, does Limewire know to end the download ? Will any of it be any good if I don't get all of it ? I have tried several of the players and the codes listed. If it matters, these are ******* torrents.
Looking for help to make this download worthwhile. Thanks

Torrents sometimes will be .rar files that need to be extracted(unzipped) first. Check to see what type of file they are.

To see which d/loads are finished, look in the d/load window in LW and under status it'll say "Complete", and the progress bar will show 100%.

If I understood you correctly, I monitor the download box. It shows the status of the entire 55GB download. Is there a way to see the status of the individual files ? The download is creating files labled as AVI, but they do not want to play on any of the players recommended in this forum. One even said it had no video in it.

I don't think you can view torrents until they are completely d/loaded, as they don't d/load from start to finish. They download the parts that are available, in other words, you might d/load the middle part first then some of the beginning then back to the middle, ect. Once they have finished you shouldn't have any trouble viewing them.

I am new to this. I think I understand some of what may be going on better. Thank you for taking time to reply.
