Thumbs down Limewire killed my system...help (can't use Task Manager or open options)

My wife was downloading a song and it was not filed as corrupt or anything and has been checked by several scans. All of a sudden my computer reset, i am unable to get LimeWire to log off without forcing through a programs to stop. It will not uninstall completely and than won't reinstall calling the program corrupt. I have also lost all of my Notification area (task bar right side) They are empty boxes that i can access. I am unable to CTRL/ALT/DEL also and can not open any option menus in any programs includeing LimeWire. WFT do i do now? any help is appreciated. I have years of billing and work info on this computer and can't afford to lose it. thanks in advance

I have the exact same problem with an additional one called Sychost which i can't get rid of from the start-up list in msconfig it just keeps on reloading itself, have never had these problems before only since i downloaded Limewire yesterday & dowloaded a couple of music files, now even after countless scans by Norton & 3 spyware removal utilities i am at my wits end.

Even though i have un-installed Limewire that too keeps on loading itself on to my my screen.

Any help would be most appreciated.

question @ helpme87: are you getting a message similar to "task manager has been disabled by the admin"?

I have and am having the same problems as the guy above. Option window pop up and disappear instantly. Also my task bar next to my clock is just a black empty box. I have uninstalled i think totally LimeWire but the other things still are not working.

What type of virus search? i have run my scan many times

worst case scenario: only a reformat and clean install will fix your problem...if this is the case then you have 2 obvious paths you can follow 1: backup all important data to CD/DVD or 2: buy another HDD and use it to install your OS on and keep the existent HDD to use as a slave for data (which of course means you can pull your important data off of it and move it directly to the new HDD)

Success guys

Found the answer in another thread =

Got rid of Norton, downloaded AVG free & bingo performed a full scan located 2 trojans including the main culprit Sychost & 1 virus then deleted the nasties & now my pc is back to normal

Got me beat how a free anti virus program can out perform a so-called top of the range product in Norton but it sure did.
