Default Unknown error with playback

Please help. When trying to playback dowloaded music files I get the following error: Limewire cannot play the file (path). There is a unknown error with this file. I use Windows XP SP 2 and Window Media Player 10. The sizes of the files seem to be fine. Except for the duration only shows 0:00:01 when viewed in Explorer.

Hmmm...Could be several things. If the File is showing 1 second duration, then thats a Good indication that the File may be Fake or Corrupt.

You say Limewire comes up with the Error Report, Where?? In the LW Media Player??
Then You say You are using WMP 10. So which is it?????
It may be as simple as needing a Codec Pack for WMP. Details for that is also in the Link I provided Below.

I HATE WMP and LW Media Player is Pathetic, so my Suggestion would be to try an Alternitive Media Player if these Files are of coarse Good Files.

See here for suggestions By LOTR. Hope this Helps.

CODECs list for Movies/Audio/ Alternate players / Video help forums/ video-mp3 fixers

Within that thread is a link to download VLC player...it's free & has codecs installed to play most file types. It's a very reliable player.

Default More info on error

Hi, thanx for the reply, here are some more info: I get the error in LW. There is an WMP icon next to the downloaded files, so I thought it would try and play the files through WMP. I downloaded 4 files and all seem to have the same problem. I downloaded codec's but it didn't solve the problem. Please assist?

Hey Thanks for giving more Info.

You need to First disable the LW Player. Go to Tools > Options > Player. Uncheck the Box and Click Apply and OK.

Now to make WMP your Default Player.
Go to your Shared Folder on your HDD. To do this...While in the LW Library, click Explore (Lower Left Part of the Screen). Once the Folder has Opened, Now Right Click Any File. Highlite "Open With" and click Choose Program. Click on WMP. Now Check the Box...Always use this Program...Then OK.

If you have No files on your HDD, WMP should become your Default Player once the LW Player is Disabled.
Hope this Helps.

Just to Add
Scan ALL files with AV before opening them, & like Remoc said VLC player is much safer and
less troublsome, with no back door. WMP dials to web & protects the file you downloaded so it cannot be Shared or used by others.

P.S. The Link for VLC player is in the link that Remoc posted above.
Peace.
