I tried uninstalling Limewire and while it got rid of whatever it keeps showing a pop up message :

I'm also getting spyware and other popups that could have only come from Limewire.

Incorrect.

You are not getting ANYTHING from Limewire (except a hat full of problems with the new versions).

What you ARE getting is garbage from people who are sharing files in the Gnutella Network. If you are downloading applications and anything that contains executable files than it's just tough for you as, unless you really know what you are doing, which automatically assumes the use of serious and effective anti-virus protection and not freebie junk, you should not even dream of D/Ling programs.
It is also necessary to learn about the various file sizes which are impossible to be what the filename purports to be, i.e. a full length movie that's 3Mb !
Limewire is merely one of numerous p2p 'clients', as they are called (meaning simply, a program that one can use for the purposes of filesharing).

These forums are full of good and accurate advice about how to do filesharing in a safer manner.
Have a read and be wary. the internet is an absurdly 'dangerous' place today !
