Default CD Player Malfunctioning.

Hi Group,
Up till I down loaded and started to use limewire I had no problems accessing and using my cd player on my pc. Games and other programs worked fine.
Since I have started to use limewire the CD player no longer works for any program. The pc is able to see that the cd player is still there but this is all.
I have a HP Compaq pc with a 2.8 GB processor, 1.5 GB ram, 250 GB on the HDD and am using Windows XP Pro for the operating system. Please help me figure this out as I would like to upgrade my limewire basic to limewire pro. I will not do so till I can figure out if limewire is indeed the problem.
Thanks, Bill H

Are you able to burn CD's? If you put a CD into the player, does it play with any program?

Try going to LW's menu bar, Tools > Options > Player & disabling it temporarily at least. See if that makes a difference.

I used to be able to burn cd's but not any more. I used to be able to play music cd's but not any more. I could down load programs and not any more either. I tried disabling the LW player and this did not make any difference either.
The pc does see the player. For some reason it can not play anything on it. It does not see when a cd is placed in it. It does not matter what kind of cd is place in it. I have been to the device manager and there is no problem there.
I am lost as to how to proceed here.
Thanks, Bill H

start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager

see what shows up there..expand the cd/dvd drive menu and look at properties and choose trouble shoot...perhaps even go so far as to uninstall, reboot, and see if your OS auto installs it and then perhaps it might work...dunno...or it just might be blind coincidence that it has died...

Hi Group,
Another strike out with this. This is my second attempt anyways and still no luck. I also tried a roll back using the system restore to a full month ago and no luck with this approach either.
thanks for the ideas so far and keep them coming.
