Vanishes on XP

Great piece of software needs to be more win32 oriented it just vanishes of XP when it feels like it usually straight after it connects it sits for a minute then it dissapears yet when its in the taskbar minimised it tends to behave a little more but uverall its unstable as hell on XP gets the speed wobbles up and stacks.

In other words the java gui doesn't lock in and stay on screen just decides to shutdown and vanish for no reason best you fix this hopefully the full version dont have this problem cos if it did there'd be a lot of ****ed of paid custmoers FIXIT pronto

Windows XP Problem

This has just started to happen with me using XP Pro. Have been using LimeWire Pro for some time now and it's just started to shut down with no warning. I agree that paid users should be getting higher priority and this problem should be receiving attention.

LimeWire is independent of operating system. It relies solely on the Java Virtual Machine.

If you haven't already done so - you could/should download the latest Java VM (Java Runtime Environment - JRE) from the following link:

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html

After installing the latest version of Java you may need to re-install LimeWire (I'm not sure if it will pick up the latest java without a re-install). Since you are having problems, a re-install of LimeWire is a good idea anyway.

There are plenty of people using LimeWire under XP without a problem - so you need to look closely at your system to find what is wrong with your system.

Read the forums and see if any of the problems described match what you are seeing - the solutions given there may well help you. There are other XP users who have had problems - so you should find something that relates to you without much too much effort.

I have the same java error on XP pro. I have 1.4 of the java plugin. I have uninstalled and reinstalled till I am blue in the face.

For those with Java errors - what is the error?

Is everybody connected to the internet *before* they try to start LimeWire?

Are you installing to the default location?

If so - have you looked in Program Files\LimeWire\"version number"? Do you have an incomplete and a shared folder there?

What internet connection do you have?
Do you have a firewall or router?
Any other software running?
Have you tried the gnutella OK test?

Registered users have a direct email address they can use for support - there is no official LimeWire presence in here.

Gnutella Test:
In WindowsXP: Go to the start menu and select run (or hold down the window key (usually between Ctrl and ALT on the left of the keyboard) and press R

type in "CMD" without the quotes in the box. Press return. You should have a DOS box (well... something that looks like a DOS box anyway).

type in:
telnet router4.limewire.com 6346

and press return.

After a moment or two you should see the message "Gnutella OK".

If you don't see this message you have a problem with your connection to the gnutella network - LimeWire won't work.

Vanishes on WP for me too

I've got the same / similar problem. For me I can't get Limewire ver. 2.4.4 even started. A Limewire window pops up with the Limewire logo & messages at the bottom that say it's loading options & such, then get a bigger window that says "Running the Gnutella Network" at the top pops up for a few seconds then it disappears.

I've done the "Gnutella OK" test - no problem. I've got a cable modem connection to the internet so I'm always connected. I've loaded the latest JAVA Runtime environment 1.4.0 then installed Limewire. Every combination of uninstalling & reinstalling Limewire & the Java Runtime environment, but it's always the same result.

Sure hope someone comes up with a fix to this soon!!!

A Fix - For Me Anyway

After my last post I tried something else that worked for me. Hopefully it will for you too.

After I installed Limewire I uninstalled all Java Runtime Environments(JREs) - then reinstalled the JRE ver 1.4.0 - then started Limewire - you should get a message that it can't find the javaw.exe file - click browse - go to the windows/system32 folder & click on the javaw.exe file.

That's it! It worked for me. Hopefully it will for some of you.
