Freezing Up At Splash Screen

Whenever I start up Limewire, it freezes at whatever splash screen opens first. While I had a previous version installed, it froze up at "Update To Pro," and now that I've tried some of the suggested fixes, it freezes during the Preferences setup (I deleted the Preferences folder). By "freezes" I mean I can't click on any buttons or boxes, even the [x] to shut down the program. The choice-type buttons even light up, but when I click on them, nothing happens.

Windows XP; Limewire 4.18.8; Latest version of JRE, all previous versions of Java uninstalled. Completely clean installation of Limewire, including removing all registry entries.

There's some other general buginess with Windows, so I can't be sure if it's Limewire itself or something interfering ... but it just stopped working between one day and the next, without any system changes or new software on my part.
