My Limewire graphics are scrambled and I can't see it - weird!!!!!

I am running basic version 4.18 on XP, AVG Anti Virus, Windows Firewall. First I had a problem connecting. It took ages (like this for quite a while) and then finally it took so many ages I was in the next century so I gave up trying for a few weeks. I decided to try again yesterday and today and now the graphics on the interface are scrambled and I can’t see anything but ‘pretty’ patterns. I have uninstalled and reinstalled and it’s still the same. This is so weird – or am I missing something obvious. Not a graphics card problem as everything else is fine.
ISP is Orange and using Orange broadband router

Try updating your Java. Go to the site below, choose the JRE (Java Runtime Environment), choose your platform, tick the license agreement... then you'll see a few different versions available. Download the JRE offline version.
Java SE Downloads

Remove any other Java versions installed on your computer (via Add/Remove programs) before you install the update:)

yselkla December 31st, 2008 12:02 PM

Thanks for that. My Java is set to auto update, but I will try it anyway. Thank you.

yselkla December 31st, 2008 12:23 PM

Birdy - I have downloaded it - the graphics are scrambled on that too so I can't see it to install.

vampire365 December 31st, 2008 05:04 PM

Same problem here, but I reinstalled Java fresh and still same problem. I have it on LimeWire and FrostWire. Plus, World of Warcraft has to be forced to use OpenGL or I get a black screen, but I can hear the sounds. I just reinstalled Windows AND my video drivers. Any ideas?

yselkla January 1st, 2009 12:20 PM

I downloaded Frostwire to try it and I have the same probs as vampire365 with that too. I haven't tried to install the java update (after uninstalling all java versions) - as I can't see the installation window because it is scrambled. I am worried that I will end up with no java at all!

yselkla January 1st, 2009 03:38 PM

I have uninstalled all previous versions of java. Re-installed the latest version from the website and tested it on the java website. Message says congratulations you have the correct version but the graphics on the java 'test' mini window are scrambled! I have downloaded the latest drivers for my graphics card. Nothing has changed. What to try next???????????????????

Same here

Lord of the Rings January 2nd, 2009 09:10 AM

See The way to fix the Blank screen on startup.

Different solutions to different cards. But one that might fix your problem is with your graphic card settings.

Quote: "Set D3D settings to default. Might be a AA or AF problem."
For Nvidia cards ... turn the advanced options off. ;)
The Nvidia advanced option has problems ... it has affected gamers also.

In any case, check what options your video card has. :) You will most likely find them in your control panels. Most likely one of those settings is the cause. :)

Something else to try is via your computer settings to change the resolution of your monitor temporarily to see if it has any effect. ;)

vampire365 January 2nd, 2009 11:50 AM

Still didn't help

yselkla January 2nd, 2009 01:55 PM

Well, last night I also updated directx - no different. I have checked the 'blank screen' option above. I have checked all the other things suggested by Lord Of The Rings. I am not a gamer so I don't adjust any graphics settings but I have checked them anyway and they are all standard. What I find most weird is the java test on the java site - the graphics are the same on the little test window as they are on LimeWire and FrostWire - blocks of scrambled graphics. Is it the same for you vampre 365?

vampire365 January 3rd, 2009 07:03 AM

Yea, same here. And my virtual fish tank will not show my fish either. I get the background and sounds, but no fish. Strange.

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 07:18 AM

Which video card brand & models do you each have?

Could be a java & video card drive clash or a setting.

So it's not only affecting LW or FrostWire.

I did see someone post some years back that turning their screensaver on or off had an effect. It seemed to clash with LW or the video card.

Have you tried changing the monitor resolution or setting on the computer .. monitor can be set not only at different dimension but different frequency also?

vampire365 January 3rd, 2009 08:50 AM

Tried changing the resolution and the settings to no avail. I have an INVIDIA FX 5500, by the way.

vampire365 January 3rd, 2009 08:53 AM

Also just turned off my screensaver. Didn't help. The first screen showed me a chopped-up version of Bart Simpson (probably due to the fact that I just watched an episode), the second looked like a smaller and chopped version of my desktop, and the third looked like a chopped-up version of the World of Warcraft log in screen.

vampire365 January 3rd, 2009 08:55 AM

To kinda add to this, I just tried to open my Java console, and the screen turned into a chopped up Bart Simpson in the window.

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 09:38 AM

I am aware the nVidia video cards come with an advanced option ... might be to do with FX not sure. But are you able to find it. I have an nVidia 8800 but mine is on a mac uses different software drivers. I was warned by several people over past 12 months about the nVidia advanced options or menu ... this apparently affects some windows users.

Sorry for sounding vague on it. If you find 3D or shaders options, disable them.

vampire365 January 3rd, 2009 10:26 AM

Well, looks like I found a sad fix for the problem. I had to uninstall Java 6 (all versions) and install Java 5.16. There is apparently a known problem with Java 6, but nobody seems to want to fix it. Oh well, at least the stuff works now.

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 10:30 AM

So ... definitely a conflict with Java 6 then.

yselkla January 3rd, 2009 01:06 PM

My graphics card is nVidia Geforce 5700 256 had it for a while, as my screensavers etc and everything has worked fine until now with this bit torrent thing. I haven't changed anything at all apart from the things I have mentioned here in an effort to sort it out. Limewire used to work fine until the connection problem which seems to have now deteriorated or turned into another problem. The weirdest thing is the java test saying it's ok but the mini test screen is scrambled. I have tried everything you have suggested and nothing. When I tried changing the screen resolutions I brought up LimeWire and I did get parts of the green nVidia logo which is strange. Something must be scrambled somewhere.

Vampire 365 - I have a fish screen saver - SereneScreen Aquarium and that is fine - still got my fish lol!

Wondering whether to do a system restore - I feel a format coming lol!!!!!!!!!!!

yselkla January 3rd, 2009 01:19 PM

Read your post re 6.0 vampire 365. I don't have it as I usually install on line and don't save the installation file. I think I found it on the java website is it - JRE 5.0 Update 16 JRE 5.0 Update 16
Java SE (JRE) Runtime Environment 5.0 update 16

vampire365 January 3rd, 2009 02:57 PM

Yea, I have that version of Java now. My fish screensaver is Aquazone Seven Seas Collection, by the way. Still haven't pinpointed the problem there yet. My problems started after I reinstalled Windows XP fresh. So, don't know.

vampire365 January 3rd, 2009 02:58 PM

It seems the scramble brings up the last things you've viewed. At least it did for me.

Lord of the Rings January 3rd, 2009 03:44 PM

There's also JRE 5.11 offline version Archive: Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Update 11, which seemed to work better for some people. :)

yselkla January 4th, 2009 03:30 PM

That would make sense - the last graphics viewed etc. Anyway I uninstalled java 6 and installed 5.0 update 16 and bingo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LimeWire has never worked so well!!!

Connected straight away as well with no probs. I think that it started to go pear shaped with the first version 6 and then progressively got worse with each update. A lesson learned I think - updates aren't always the best way to go, and do I really need them?!!!

Thank you for your help and support vampire 365 and Lord Of The Rings (got your penguins too - sent by a friend via email - cute aren't they). Haven't tried my screensavers yet. Hope they work - I paid for them! Weiserware do brilliant ones.
