Moderators

There are senior members on the forums who serve as Moderators. These volunteers keep the board organized and moving.
Moderators are authorized to: (in order of increasing severity)
Move posts to the correct forums. Many times, members post in the wrong forum. These off-topic posts may impede the normal operation of the forum.
Edit posts. Moderators will edit posts that are offensive or break any of the House Rules.
Delete posts. Posts that cannot be edited to comply with the House Rules will be deleted.
Restrict members. This is one of the last punishments before a member is banned. Restrictions may include placing all new posts in a moderation queue or temporarily banning the offender.
Ban members. The most severe punishment. Three or more moderators or administrators must agree to the ban for this action to occur. Banning is reserved for very severe offenses and members who, after many warnings, fail to comply with the House Rules. Banning is permanent. Bans cannot be removed by the moderators and probably won't be removed by the administration.

The Rules

1. Warez, copyright violation, or any other illegal activity may NOT be linked or expressed in any form. Topics discussing techniques for violating these laws and messages containing locations of web sites or other servers hosting illegal content will be silently removed. Multiple offenses will result in consequences. File names are not required to discuss your issues. If filenames are copyright then do not belong on these forums & will be edited out or post removed. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

2. Spamming and excessive advertising will not be tolerated. Commercial advertising is not allowed in any form, including using in signatures.

3. There will be no excessive use of profanity in any forum.

4. There will be no racial, ethnic, or gender based insults, or any other personal attacks.

5. Pictures may be attached to posts and signatures if they are not sexually explicit or offensive. Picture sample attachments in posts must not include copyright infringement.

6. Remember to post in the correct forum. Take your time to look at other threads and see where your post will go. If your post is placed in the wrong forum it will be moved by a moderator. There are specific Gnutella Client sections for LimeWire, Phex, FrostWire, BearShare, Gnucleus, Morpheus, and many more. Please choose the correct section for your problem.

7. If you see a post in the wrong forum or in violation of the House Rules, please contact a moderator via Private Message or the "Report this post to a moderator" link at the bottom of every post. Please do not respond directly to the member - a moderator will do what is required.

8. Any impersonation of a forum member in any mode of communication is strictly prohibited and will result in banning.

9. Multiple copies of the same post will not be tolerated. Post your question, comment, or complaint only once. There is no need to express yourself more than once. Duplicate posts will be deleted with little or no warning. Keep in mind a forum censor may temporarily automatically hold up your post, if you do not see your post, do not post again, it will be dealt with by a moderator within a reasonable time. Authors of multiple copies of same post may be dealt with by moderators within their discrete judgment at the time which may result in warning or infraction points, depending on severity as adjudged by the moderators online.

10. Posts should have descriptive topics. Vague titles such as "Help!", "Why?", and the like may not get enough attention to the contents.

11. Do not divulge anyone's personal information in the forum, not even your own. This includes e-mail addresses, IP addresses, age, house address, and any other distinguishing information. Don´t use eMail addresses in your nick. Reiterating, do not post your email address in posts. This is for your own protection.

12. Signatures may be used as long as they are not offensive or sexually explicit or used for commercial advertising. Commercial weblinks cannot be used under any circumstances and will result in an immediate ban.

13. Dual accounts are not allowed. Cannot explain this more simply. Attempts to set up dual accounts will most likely result in a banning of all forum accounts.

14. Video links may only be posted after you have a tally of two forum posts. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam. Video link posting with less than a 2 post tally are considered as spam.

15. Failure to show that you have read the forum rules may result in forum rules breach infraction points or warnings awarded against you which may later total up to an automatic temporary or permanent ban. Supplying system details is a prerequisite in most cases, particularly with connection or installation issues.

Violation of any of these rules will bring consequences, determined on a case-by-case basis.

Thank You! Thanks for taking the time to read these forum guidelines. We hope your visit is helpful and mutually beneficial to the entire community.

Default There was a Problem viewing "NAME" files

I just recently heard about lime wire's private file sharing feature and lept at the chance to use it as I'm a musician and like collaborating online with fellow artists. This seemed like an easy to use solution.

So me and my friend both download the newest limewire (Amazing work on the UI btw!) And we add each other as friends using our gmail accounts. I share a folder and so does he. But when I click on his name I get an message in a lime green box that says There was a Problem viewing "His Name" files.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Info
-Me = Xp pro 64bit edition
-Him = Vista

Most likely due to a firewall issue. Both of you check the first option 'Check Your Firewall' at top of this page: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/connec...t-connect.html 3rd paragraph in that first quote box.

His name is greyed out right, or just non-browsable?

(BTW I know you probably wish to retain anonymity, however using the bugmenot account will make it incredibly slow for you on this forum. That account has been abused too many times by the wrong type of people being problematic so we have limited its abilities. Setting up a fresh account will get you back to normal. Your personal details are kept private.)

-We both have our firewalls completely off.

-His name is not greyed out and when I click on his name I get the message
There was a Problem viewing "Name" files in the middle of where his files should be.

I do not think there is a connectivity problem as he and I can connect to the p2p network and download files. Just unable to connect to each other.

Any more ideas?

I have not used the Friends option yet. If you're sure that the advanced window for both of you say you're not behind a firewall (which does not necessarily mean you cannot connect), then I'm not sure what the problem might be. My only thought might be something to do with Vista's security, the permissions on his folder where his files for share with Friends is.

However, Browse host has never been a perfect tool, it is supposed to have improved greatly for LW 5 compared to LW 4. My impression was it had improved. Friends is more or less the replacement for Direct Connect option of LW 4.

No simple answers at this point. One alternative, at least for time being is using magnet links. He creates a magnet link to one of his files, sends it to you via email, you copy-paste the magnet link address into your browser & LW starts to download it. Then you Browse him using the View Files of ... option by right-clicking the downloading file. If still cannot browse him. hmm ... something is interfering. ISP inbetween, it's hard to say. Perhaps even a less than great performing ultrapeer between you two.
Magnet links: Posts #3-6 here http://www.gnutellaforums.com/limewi...tml#post339645

* BTW I do notice in your image, it shows a Medium quality connection only. This could 'definitely' affect things. If it's because LW was left alone for a long time, then waking it might set it back to full connection.

(Good to see you share a lot of files. I share 2.5 times that but that's with LW 4, it seems for MacOSX, LW 5 does not like too many shares with this release at least.)

Thanks for the help even though I couldn't get it working. Next Time he comes online I shall try sharing less but besides that I don't know what to do.

Actually I am sharing around 75,000 files but that screen was taken when it just started up.

Do you know of any private file sharing program alternatives?

Direct Connect The World of Peer-to-Peer (P2P)/Networks and Protocols/Direct Connect - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks

Here's one of them: DC++ your files, your way, no limits but I think only for windows

neo-modus direct connect was the original which all other direct connect clients copied from. But their site seems to have sold to an advertiser. Program no longer runs. On my old G4, I tried my old mac shakespear client, connected ok on OSX 10.3.9 but not even opened on tiger .. perhaps because it wasn't installed on there or perhaps because it's no longer developed. Their forums no longer exist. So I have no idea now what alternatives there are for Mac direct connect. I haven't used it for about 3 years or over.

Direct connect connects via hubs. There are public hubs & private hubs. A private hub would be ideal if you guys could set one up between you. However it does require extra software & know-how to set up & operate. Private hubs are invitation only, & usually require passwords to enter. You can share directly with anybody within the hub. Simply click on their user id & view their files, choose whichever to download. Easy as that. Cannot remember if you can make certain folders shared with only certain people, or prevent others within same hub seeing particular folders. From memory I think you can stop a person viewing your files at all.

Disadvantage of public hubs is anybody can download from you. Some have minimum share requirements such as 10 GB or 1 Gb depending. Some don't have much in way of requirements.

You might be best to use Parallels & set up windows XP, run a direct connect client such as Direct Connect++. Via parallels you could share files/folders directly from your mac.

BTW it's much easier to share very large numbers of files via direct connect than LW. Direct Connect (except for initial hashing of files when you add to share) does not seem overladen if too many shares. And also reads from external drives much much better than LW can for sharing. LW seems to carry all files shared on its shoulders. lol DC clients don't.

Bittorrent I 'think' now has a private share option with 'friends'. That's definitely a thought. There's also private sites for BT users. But they always have share requirements. Unless you guys set up your own. The 'Friends' option sounds good & is probably similar to LW 5's Friends option. I haven't tried either so cannot give you any more information.

Other alternative might be Skype.

Edit: Silly me thought you were a mac user. Not sure why I got confused. There are alternatives to DC++ for direct connect. Thanks Sleepless also. A great alternative to DC.
