Default Limewire Freezes, is it AOL?

I have this frustrating problem which I cannot find a fix in that LW freezes after about 10 seconds after start-up. I have followed the advice posted in many threads regarding reinstalling both java and LW but without success. I've run CCleaner and other suggested applications.

I temporarily fixed the problem by installing earlier versions of both LW (pre 5.1.3) and java (5.xx) but this was short-lived. I'm not sure this makes any difference, but I searched Windows registry for anything relating to LW and deleted it before the reinstallation. I have since tried the same but without success. O/S is WinXP

Is it possible that my ISP (AOL) is preventing LW from opening?
Any help on this would be much appreciated, I miss the convenience of LW.

Cheers ADH

Hi ADH,

Which version of LW were you originally having trouble with? To use any version of LW 5, you'll need to have Java 6 installed.

Some people have found that using this older version of Java 6 solved a few problems: Archive: Download Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE) 6u5

Are you making sure that you only have one version of Java installed at a time? Make sure to remove any other versions via Add/Remove Programs, before installing another Java.

Otherwise check out this thread (click on link), there are some other things to try apart from reinstalling Java: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/331559-post2.html
Even though that post's in response to someone whose LW wouldn't open at all, something there might also work for you? Deleting LW's preferences folder can help with some weird issues!

If nothing helps, try installing LW to a different account & see whether it opens without freezing.

Would not stop LW from opening, however AOL in UK usually shape p2p sharing bandwidth so you will not get good speeds. Many other ISP's in UK are shaping also.

Hi Guys

An update on my plight. LW is still crashing and it appears to be when the connecting icon becomes active. I have tried all that is detailed in the threads such as completely removing LW and Java (latest), using JRE6.5, reinstalling with offline versions etc.

History - I first noticed difficulties when I moved to LW5, within a few weeks I believe. No other programs were installed on my PC between the upgrade to LW5 and the beginning of the problems. The first time it froze, I removed all traces of LW files then reinstalled; LW worked perfectly for about 2 weeks then problems again. This time, I could sometimes get the program working if I started LW then immediately clicked on the task bar when the main screen had loaded randomly choosing different tabs such as Options. Keeping the program 'busy' in this way worked yesterday when I tried. I had a stable connection, really fast searches and lightning download speeds. Once I'd finished my session, I closed LW, restarted the PC and opened LW to check if the problem had resolved itself; no program froze 6 times 6.
Your help would be much appreciated.

I have exactly the same problem. I only just installed Limewire as I've not used it in ages. I installed to my wired desktop using WinXP and it froze. Installed it to my wireless laptop using Win7 and it froze again. Just sounds like crap to me.
