macOS Big Sur Wire Share install
 

Greetings,

I am presented with a blank window when trying to run Wire Share on macOS Big Sur.

I have already allowed the installation of an unsigned application and have allowed the traffic trough the firewall.

I am a Java software developer so the problem maybe something I have changed in the Java settings.

May I ask which version of Java is installed?

Which version of WireShare? Is it 6.0, 6.1 or an earlier version? Is it the standard (BigJx) or WireShare 6.0 (HERMES) version?
A variation of java versions has been used for the code & gui depending on WireShare version.

I don't think anybody on the WireShare dev team has Big Sur OS 11 to test since Apple loves to limit what OS each of their older machines can run.

Whilst this won't solve the problem with the WireShare version you have, you could try a different version to see if the problem persists. https://sourceforge.net/projects/wireshare/files/
If one of the versions do open and load properly, it gives us a starting point to work from.

At this point I haven't heard back from BigJx.

Edit: Forgot to ask, does the WireShare program 'Get Info' option have any compatibility options?

It might be worth opening Console (if it still exists) prior to opening WireShare to check if any errors show. Please report any findings if any.

A bit of a search around stackoverflow suggests big sur changed the dynamics of java such as the paths.

Hi therealalbaro, from the screenshot you posted above, it appears you have downloaded WireShare 6.0.1 with embedded Java 6. Therfore, it doesn't matter which Java version you have installed as WireShare will use the embedded JDK. I currently don't have a Big Sur machine to test on but I think the issue may be Big Sur not playing well with the embedded Java. Additionally, the embedded Java 6 version is 32bit which may also be an issue on Big Sur. Maybe you could try the WireShareOSX-v6.0.1.dmg which is compiled with Java 8 and has an embedded Java 8 64bit runtime and let us know your findings.

Problem Solved
 

I was able to solve the problem by downloading the version compatible with Java 8. Java 6 has not been supported in Mac OS since macOS 10.7 Lion. If I remember correctly, it is more than likely a Mac OS prompt, that prevents the program from running. I was able to accept the prompt for Frost Wire years ago which allows me to still run the software.

The program seems to crash at start, I tried getting the about window to open to no avail. It must be that Mac OS Java prompt that keeps the program from working properly.

It might be the prompt attached I don't remember exactly, the problem is that the prompt is in Java 6, and is not visible in any newer version of Java. The irony.

Only if run in 32-bit. Apple's java 6 was both 32 and 64 bit capable and is at least compatible with os 10. Depends how java 6 is set in the app.
I have apps (such as WireShare) that use Java 6 on El Capitan 10.11 and there are java 6 updates available for the later macos (10.12+) releases.

I meant the Finder information window about the app, not after the program has opened. Sorry I should have been more specific.
