I do not want to share my files.

Can someone please tell me how I can make it so people cannot upload my files? I do not want to share them.

Thanks in advance.

Tools-->Options-->Sharing and the rest is self explanatory. If you have alot of good files that you think others might enjoy and as long as you have the proper internet security set-up, it is always considerate to share your files.
Good luck friend!

Not Sharing Files

SugarPlum

Just to follow up on what LinusVanPelt wrote, if everyone took the attitude that they do not want to share their files then the P2P network would cease to exist.

P2P is about sharing and not to share your files while downloading from others on the network makes you a freeloader.

Most of us on this forum can understand if there are some files you do not want to share but to say you do not want to share anything then I for one will not share with you.

I have set my LW not to share with freeloaders and I would strongly suggest to other forum members to do exactly the same thing.

:D Theres a very good reason for not sharing files okay i agree you should share your music and videos thats just what the whole p2p networks about but if you have "sensetive" images i.e. private photos from say your holiday and documents containing passwords or bank details you should not share them [obviously] it is better to put your i.p. number into the direct connect and see exactly what your sharing incase your photos of you and your partner practising for readers wives is shared funny but not very nice for you.I go on documents i can read other shareers e-mails msn conversations which are private and can sometimes contain private details like adresses and phone numbers great if you want a 3am phone call but not if you just want to download a few music tracks and a few pictures. It takes carefull setting up and checking regulary it can be a bit embarassing if you don't.

there's lots you can share, and help out artists who encourage sharing. See www.magnetmix.com for some.

Sharing legitimate files can help the network.
Another way you can be a legitimate peer in a peer to peer network (and not a leech) is to leave your LW running for long times as an Ultrapeer. This can take some work to set up, but is another way you can help the network by sharing your bandwidth.

I agree entirely with UKBobbby01. I also set my options not to share with freeloaders. I would like to see Lord Of The Rings or someone similar make a "Sticky" about how not to share with freeloaders - I know you can't make them share but if more members knew it was possible to prevent it I'm sure more of them would. A Sticky could include the fact as well that there is a lot of non-copyright music out there which can be shared perfectly legally.

ummm--the freeloading option has been ineffective for quite a while now: it's just a placebo.

Look for posts by et voilà to see how long the freeloader option has been broken.

Comments noted .......aagh .......... did not realise the disallowing freeloaders settings did not actually work. Oh well, forget the Sticky idea. Let's just hope we are sharing with sharers most of the time.

Couldn't you just keep your sensitive files in an unshared folder?

How do you determine whether a person is a freeloader or someone who doesn't have anything to share yet? You have to start somewhere don't you?

steffi August 15th, 2006 11:39 AM

Do you mean that even if you've named a specific folder in LW's share option people can still see other folders you haven't named?!

What I do with mine is keep the ones I want to share in a shared folder and my sensitive ones in a folder that isn't shared (noone can see those of course). If you later decided to share them you could move particular ones to a shared foldier, or, to share all in that folder, just change the folder itself to shared.

steffi August 15th, 2006 12:52 PM

I couldn't really believe anyone could have stuff like that in a shared folder but I suppose you could forget it was there couldn't you? I've only got music in my shared folder and I'll make sure I keep it that way.

We have to get information somewhere, we aren't born with it; even those know-it-alls who read these posts looking for someone to jump on. They just clutter up the forum.
