recent connection problems

I have been using Limewire for a long time. I have recently encountered connection problems I have never had and to my knowledge nothing on my computer has changed. I have the firewall turned off. I have dsl, and my provider runs a firewall I believe but it has never caused a problem before. I have the latest version and I can't connect.

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
12. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?

You might well read here to understand what might has happened recently at your University:
http://www.ilstu.edu/helpdesk/securi...Management.pdf

Seems that they have recognized that the students overstretched the bandwidth usage and have begun to shape the p2p applications.

Then maybe that's the problem:
04/07/04

* Customers in South Ames may be experiencing intermittent connectivity with their DSL. Qwest is currently making changes to the DSL systems and there is no ETA when this will be completed.

Just ask your network administrator what the problem is......;)

Connecting to gnutella via University networks has always been a PITA due to their usage policy.
That you had no problems so far, doesn't mean that your University hasn't changed its behaviour.

One more thing, if it turns out that the problem hasn't occured due to your network administration, try to delete the " .limewire " preference folder when LW is completely closed (see point 2&3 in Fixes for Limewire):
http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=36420

Maybe that could do the trick......;)

Also, my ISP is ISUnet(which is not Iowa State University net), it stands for Internet Services United. The lines are provided by ISU but the service provider is a third party, so I believe the Iowa State regulations don't apply?

I promise, the next time you post because of some problems, including clear detailed information, I'll try to help you with the proper infos.....

Okay, I've got two more things that came to my mind regarding your problem.
Firstly, I assume you see the brickwall in front of your globe in the left bottom corner of the LW window.
It is possible that this brickwall does not come from your (offline) firewall, but from your Antivirus program (in my case it was AVAST). I went into the menu of Avast and put the comeplete LW folder into my exception list. After that I restarted LW and the firewall dieappeared instantly. So, that might be a way to solve your problem.

Secondly, after reading some more about ISUnet, I came to this article:

http://www.isunet.net/support/support_disconnects.html

I don't know whether this is connected to your problem, but I thought I'd let you know anyway.....;)

I'm having dreadful connection problems at the moment. I get connected to LW bt often the connection drops and the connection quality display drops to next to nothing. Whe nI click on conncetions I see that all tge connections I had to Ultra Peers have died and LW is trying to connect to 3 more.

I've used LW for a long time and I know how to configure the program. This has only happened since LW upgraded to 4.12.3 and only in the last 12 hours.

The connection quality drops and then sometimes it goes back to full strength. Other times it drops to almost nothing, and when I click on the "Connections" tab it shows I have a connection to one ultrapeer with many more trying to connect. Twice I have had no connection at all, and then I get a popup dialogue box to say it was trying to connect, but after that, and regardless of what I do, I can't get a connection.

Help!

This is mightly confuzing...

Do you see a brickwall in front of the small globe in the bottom left corner of the LW window?
And who is your ISP?
