Default What IE 6 Settings enabled? Can't connct LWbasic.

I've searched a bit here but haven't seen what Internet Explorer 6 Settings in XP Home SP2 [Sony Pent 4 laptop] need to be enabled for LW Basic to work.

I wasn't able to begin the download [the most recent version, I believe 4.12.6 ? on Aug 29, 06] until I discovered LW requires Javascript enabled. [My understanding is JS is highly vulnerable so I keep it Disabled, as w/ most Settings in Security, Custom Level.]

Then I noticed LW adding Java and I wondered if this is because I have Java disabled. [LW's install of Java was apparently successful, it shows in Control Panel.]

My install of LW Basic was apparently successful according to the messages it produced...It created a Short Cut on my desktop.]

But when I click the Shortcut, it seems to try to re-install and wont connect...I see a crawler across the bottom of the dialog box..."adding HTML," etc.

I have Comcast cable, no router. As far as I know, I gave adequate permissions from Zone Alarm Basic, checking the Remember box. [I have Microsoft Firewall disabled, and use only Zone.] But I didn't see in Zone's list of Programs the one LW said should be given permissions: zaw or paw something?

I Uninstalled LW Basic from Control Panel. I still have the Java it installed.

Thank you for your help.

First of all, LW is a Java based program and thus needs Java to run. You have to enable it (besides IE is much more vulnerable to attacks then Java IMO). Use FireFox instead.
Secondly, you should actually not use the Control panel>Remove Software function to uninstall LW. It is better to use START>Program>LimeWire>Uninstall.

I'd recommend you uninstalling the Java and rebooting. Then enable Java via the IE. I think it should be done via the Internet options (though I haven't use IE for qiute some time -I don't even have it installed).
After that reinstall Java using the JRE offline installer of the newest version which you can get here:
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp

Then reboot again and install LW. Then configure your Norton to allow LW access.

just did all that to a T and i get the same result as the poster. the last thing that i think i saw in the crawler say was launching library or something like that. i am running defender pro, but no firewall that i know of on it. i did however have the firewall icon showing when i did have it working. any input on why that icon was up and where i might go to find out if i do infact have a firewall that i can't find running from defender...already looked everywhere in the program.

desertPOD,
I see from one of your old posts that you've tried deleting the preferences folder before. Did you ever try changing the compatibility to Win NT or 2000? Right click the LW icon & give it a try (sorry if you have already tried that, can't remember seeing it in any of your old posts). Have you tried reverting back to an older version of LW (providing you have an old installer) to see what happens?

Your LW might've been seeing an internal firewall within your modem or router.
You'd need to enable UPnP or port forward in that case. There's info about those in the thread below, just in case your LW gets going again

thank you for some more paths to follow. unfortunately i don't have an old installer. i tried to change the configureation and i allpied all of the different ones that they had and still no dice. last night i tried to install it on my laptop that is a couple of years old and it worked. they are both connected to the same router and both with cables. I'll have to go through that link carefully to see what i can find out from that. the router is a linksys router and even though it works on the laptop, i'd rather it work on the pc (800-ish mHz vs alsmost 2 GHz).

well, i'm now convinced that it has to do with java. i have tried everything and every JRE install i can find and none of them is helping with the situation. i have turned off the firewall to see if that is the issue as well as enabled all the up2p stuff. it gets right to the point that it would open up the LW window and then does nothing. the computer clicks as to say that something should have just happened, but nothing did.

Ok, I'm no Java expert (there is one, but he's not around right now!) Try using this link for downloading Java:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Follow the instructions for download, then reboot & go back to that link to verify the Java installation. This is a download of update 6... I can't find the same procedure for update 8 (the latest). I'm using LW 4.12.6 Pro with this same update 6... give it a go & see if installing then verifying the install makes any difference.
(apologies if you've already tried this method!)

i understand that, and i was a part of another thread looking for solutions. the poster of this thread played out my situation exactly, so i figured that if his was solved than that might help mine.
