Hello. Im New Here.

I finally got Limewire :yahoo:

Im new here & have no idea how to use Limewire.

I tried to download a song & it didnt work, it turned yellow when I tried to play it in the media player. I did download my first cong before that & it played. Im wondering if the 'T' or 'cable' choosing has something to do with it.

I also have over 5000 songs that I would like to 'share' but I dont know how to offer them.

Can anyone please suggest a place where I can read up on Limewire & how to use it from start to finish.

I understand some of the terminology.

thank you very much Hobo & Birdy, you were both so quick, lol.

I will read up on all the above & get back to you.

I 'think' I figured out how to 'share' my tunes, it says at the bottom of Limewire that I am sharing 5k+ songs.

BBS.

MrsVege November 25th, 2006 04:57 PM

Very good input Hobo, & I understood it, lol.

I didnt know Limewire had it's own media player 'till this morning through the 'Tip Of The Day', (Brilliant idea.) I did manage to put the music through the Windows Media Player 10.

I have downloaded one tune, its the old ****** ***** for the kids. I played it & the sound wasn't the best, but it is an old track.

I downloaded 2 others as I said & when I tried to play it, this came up:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

This I do not understand & I have no idea how to find the answer.

One thing thats in the back of my mind is the useage. Im allowed 500MB, & I dont know how much that is, but I will probably come across it in the info I have to read.

With the sharing, I can figure out how to put some instead of all. I noticed the lag on the computer with all of them there. I don't know what upload is, but I know download can be costly. Does it cost for uploading?

If there is somewhere else I should be posting this, please let me know. In a forum I go to, to learn how to do back-ups, they gave me my own thread, cos I kept getting lost, lol.

Cheers.

I have put all the "A's" from my tunes to share. I will leave them there for a couple of 'Aussie' days. My computer is on in average 12 hours a day.

Sorry, I dont know how I got the letters to go large in the above post, I found the 'edit' button, lol. I'm not sure if I'm game enough to use it again.

MrsVege November 25th, 2006 06:21 PM

Is the following in relation to me not being able to the songs not playing & causes the writing to turn yellow?

==============
The best audio files to download are mp3. You should avoid wma for various reasons, one of which is they often are unplayable. Codecs are a big subject and I'm not an expert but this link has information about them. http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=40665.
I would not worry about it now unless you are desparate to open one particular song ...probably easier to re-search and find an mp3 version.
==============

So I should just leave them & not delete? Is there a way I can avoid this type of 'thing' lol.

Oh... &.... if I get out of Limewire, am I still sharing. I need to do other stuff now & I have to get out of it. I dont want to disconnect anybody, lol. I also want to know about chatting, but I will read about that later when I get a grip on the basic's.

Cheers

MrsVege November 25th, 2006 07:01 PM

Thank you for your help

G'nite. :tease:

I'm off fishing now, lol.

:super:

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 12:12 AM

No fish... but I did find out that I've used 1010mb. I'm only allowed 500. I downloaded a site that I thought I wanted, & being use to dial up loading, I didnt think anything of it when it took 8 hours. :bangh:

I can't share at the moment or receive any tunes, though I will be here to find out whats what.

birdy November 27th, 2006 12:21 AM

Who's your ISP? If I go over my limit (iPrimus) I just get booted back to dial-up speed but I can still upload & download...just takes forever.

500 MB isn't much, check if your ISP has a plan with a higher limit...if it's not a huge increase in speed, it might not cost much more than what you're on now.

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 02:31 AM

I changed IP's when I went to Broadband.

I had to get Satelite because I couldn't get anything else other than dial up.

I can't really afford to go any higher with MB's, so I will just have to chill for the next few weeks on my dial up conection while I still have it.

Thanks for trying to help though. :xirokrotima:

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 03:30 PM

I signed up with Activ8.net.au They are advertising on the T.V. at the moment. Satelite from $29.95, free installation to those who are eligible.

I am allowed 500MB's

But .. get this... I emailed their support asking how much extra I will be up for, for the extra MB's, & the returned email said: You will not be charged at this stage for exceeding the limit, up until January. normally its 8cents per MB.

So I'm still not sure what's what, lol, (free downloads till January? I'm on my dial up connection at the moment downloading a song to see how long it takes, not long at all. I'm beginning to think that dial up really isn't that bad. I don't know how to do anything on a computer to warrant broadband, I just wanted my phone line open.

Lets hope Activ8's above comment means I'm in the clear. I will figure out the useage I'm allowed & go from there.

Thank you both for your concern. I'm sticking around because I don't have anywhere else to go. I use to be assistant director on a hold'em ***** site, (the players were recruited for staff) & I was there 16 hours a day average. I barely go there now, so I have some spare time.

wondering why November 27th, 2006 03:45 PM

That's really expensive for dial up, I think your being ripped and their offering free download usage to get people in at the moment...Who do you go through for your home phone ???

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 04:05 PM

Sorry, sometimes I'm not clear on what I say, but 'I' know what I'm talking about, lol.

My dial up was only $12.95 a month with unlimited downloads & I was never kicked off the internet. It went through the phone line.

I waited 2 years for broadband to come to our exchange & when it did I found out I still couldn't get broadband because I didn't have a copper something-or-other. Satelite was my only option to not go through the phone line. I thought $29.95 a month was a good price for it. 256/64 I think with the 500MB limit at .08 cents a MB if I go over. (That would mean 500MB's would cost $40. 1000MB's useage costs $49.95.)

Activ8 is good, its just I don't know what I'm doing.

I went through the previous emails from Activ8, & found one said that I could use as much useage as I want until February. I'm not going to do that though, I don't want to get use to using alot, or take advantage of what I think might be a 'new' Provider.

It's all good. As I read somewhere: Patience is a virtue...

wondering why November 27th, 2006 04:10 PM

Ahhh got you now...500MBs isn't alot, so I reckon you go for it while you have got the extra for free...:rolleyes_2:
Have fun...

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 04:27 PM

Other than being here I don't have or know of other places, lol. I am thinking in the direction of a movie or 2 though, hehe. Maybe. Needless to say I can leave the 'sharing' thing on, lol.

The copper something I think is a copper pipe on my phone line. Im sort of out on my own here but with towns very close by.

wondering why November 27th, 2006 04:29 PM

So what part of OZ you from and is the weather getting stinking hot for you like it is in brisbane...

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 04:33 PM

I'm in the Riverland, it's going to be 37 today. Fruit growing region. I live on a fishing track to the Murray River, the main traffic are kangaroo's & lizards, lol.

wondering why November 27th, 2006 04:36 PM

Lol, I hate the heat, I had the aircon going at 7am this morning, we have been getting 35 to 36 for the last few days...Sounds nice where you are, but still to hot...:D

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 04:48 PM

Yes it is hot, & I'm not a big fan of it. I have 2 aircon's in my house, lol.

My husband wants me to shift to the city, but my youngest (Daniel) is starting school next year & there's only 37 students in the whole school. My 7 year old (Jack) absolutely love's going there, & would break his heart to leave. So here I stay.

Do you have kids?

wondering why November 27th, 2006 04:58 PM

Yep I have 2 kids a 13yr old son and a 9yr old daughter...I originally came from Port Macquarie NSW, but moved to Brisbane in 99, I'm still wondering why (pardon the pun lol) I did....:D

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 09:21 PM

I always wanted a daughter, lol. I use to cry when I walked down the 'pink' isle in a toy shop, lol. I'm over it now though, but I still get very clucky.

I also have 2 older boys as well, 18 & 21.

I've been noseying around the site, & there is so much to learn.

It's so hot outside, I'm bored & have got absolutely nothing to do, not even housework, lol.

Are there any sites around that I can get invovled with? Nice 'clean' sites, lol.

birdy November 27th, 2006 10:04 PM

Sorry but we really shouldn't mention titles of things downloaded...even though Oz doesn't have the same laws as some other other countries:wink:

I have 2 boys too, 6 & 9. They run me ragged:D

MrsVege November 27th, 2006 10:31 PM

Sorry about that. I deleted that bit. I should read the Rules & Regulations of your site.

6 & 9 are the fun ages. It' pretty full on, lol.

I see you live in Perth, such a beautiful place. I lived in WA for a couple of years. Family was the only reason I came back.

MrsVege November 28th, 2006 03:40 AM

I find it very hard to go to another thread, when I can't understand what it says, lol.

So much to learn. :bangh:

MrsVege November 30th, 2006 05:20 PM

Ok, I'm back from the 'movies' to get back into the tunes, lol.

I would like to ask about the 'Incomplete Files'. Is it ok to delete these files after the song is in the 'Share File' & in the Media Player?

wondering why November 30th, 2006 07:41 PM

I don't get what you mean about them being in the incomplete folder if their in your shared folder...

If you mean can you delete the file from Limewire after it's been downloaded and sitting in your shared folder the answer is no...

This sticky will explain more...:rolleyes_2:

MrsVege December 3rd, 2006 03:58 PM

Hi guys... sorry I haven't been around.

We had a few fires spotted everywhere near me, they were called the 'Bookmark' fires. I was watching flames as high as the trees from my front door about 2 or 3 kilometres away. It was a hairy experience.

We are so lucky the wind was in out favour. :yahoo:

I had a few things ready to grab & run, including the computer, lol.

Now, back to fun.

Everything I download or try to then cancel goes into an 'incomplete' file (just above the 'shared file' where they end up if downloaded)

I think thats the one you say can be deleted.

Sleepless December 3rd, 2006 04:34 PM

Any cancelled incomplete files you do not want to continue downloading and all previews can be deleted from the incomplete folder without disturbing anything else.

In case you access the folder outside of Limewire. There are two files which should not be deleted unless you want to start fresh. They are called Downloads.dat and Downloads.bak

thediscoera December 4th, 2006 09:02 AM

This is for "Only A Hobo". I read about what you said that the best audio files to download are mp3 and to stay away from wma because they are unplayable. I don't know if this holds true to whats happening with me, but maybe you can help. Everytime I try to play a song, it opens upto Music Match and eventhough it is okay, I just can't play it anyways. I believe the file I downloaded was a "wma" file- I'm at work at the moment and I can't remember exactly. Can I have it set to play with iTunes instead? The other thing is that I set it to play with the LimeWire Media Player, and it still opens upto MusicMatch. Can you or anyone else help - please. Thanks

thediscoera December 5th, 2006 05:43 AM

Hi Only A Hobo - Thanks for your help. I did exactly what you said and it worked wonderfully. The only problem I'm having now is with itunes. Itunes recognizes limewire and it opens its own library, but when I try to drag a song to the itunes library it won't let me, as a matter a fact it won't let me drag it anywhere for that matter. The question is, is it even possible to do that? Again, thanks for your help in advance. Whatever feedback you may have is most appreciated.

thediscoera December 6th, 2006 06:53 AM

I followed your suggestions and you were right on target. Thank you so much. I am now able to enjoy my music with my Ipod. I hope others find you as helpful as I have - you are very good at what you do. Thanks again.

MrsVege December 9th, 2006 05:57 PM

I have a question, but I won't be able to get back to you for awhile.

How do I get Windows Media Player to play the tunes that won't play because of something called 'codec'? (I think its called that)

Cheers
MrsV

Sleepless December 9th, 2006 06:03 PM

If you are using XP I would recommend this codecpack:

http://www.xpcodecpack.com/

Just download and install (should contain every codec you need to play music except protected .mp4. It includes Mediaplayer Classic as well, which is very good for playing movies/videos.

MrsVege December 9th, 2006 06:46 PM

Thank you both.

Sorry Hobo, I would been zoned in on the other thing I was trying to do, so I would have put it in the 'later' info box in my head. Then I forget.

There is supposed to be a storm here soon so I don't want to be on here when it hits. I will be back tomorrow to let you know how I went with it.
