Using the TorrentReactor web-site (as a previous user of BitTorrent) one thing I find disappointing about LimeWire is the lack of downloads that I really want. Is it only possible to download files from other LW users,or is there a way of telling it to download from a source other than it's own search results?

Do you mean a Gnettella source or from a web-site?

I was referring to Torrent search web-sites, but I would be interested in either if it's possible to widen the availability.

Perhaps you should put your idea forward as a suggested improvement.

AFAIK this initial implementation of Torrents in LW is just an introduction to it. The devs will be adding more things as times goes by. However (afaik) they didn't want to over complicate it by bringing in a whole bunch of stuff at once. The initial implementation was just a simple one. I am aware they're going to add more things & improve LW's ability at torrents. BTW can often use your browser to search torrents.
