Sharing Button

I know i.m a bit dim, but I never really understood exactly what the options/
sharing/share finished downloads button does? the preamble is ''You can share files that you download to unshared folders'' what does this paradox mean???
also if i tick the box, what happens? if i untick the box what happens? I havn't noticed any difference! I'm still sharing folders that I have loaded into library whether ticked or unticked? so what exactly is happening?
I've been using LWire for awhile now but have never really understood that bit,can anyone explain please.
Puzzled,
Newbee2

It just means that the download is shared after it finishes even if the folder you downloaded it into isn't being shared

newbee2 February 20th, 2007 04:33 PM

Thanks sleepless for reply,
Two small points on this,if you are 'Browsing' someone, do these files shared to unshared show up? presumably yes? and if one was being uploaded would it show in my upload window.whilst being uploaded?
Many thanks,
N2:confused:

I really don't understnd what you're saying in your post, please clarify

muhctekdano February 26th, 2007 08:30 AM

I think this is what he's asking:

I download file xyz into the 'my pictures' folder.

I do not share the 'my pictures' folder, but I have the option ticked to 'share files that I download to unshared folders'.

If someone browses my files, will they see file xyz? And will it show up in the upload window if I am uploading it? I think another question to ask is this: will it appear in my LW Library?

Sleepless February 27th, 2007 02:09 AM

yes.. or actually I think it shows up under induvidually shared files

I'm not quite sure that your answer is correct unless you have your entire drive shared.

Let me explain my understanding of how I believe LW works:

First of all, most (careful) people will only share a folder on their drive and not their entire disk. Within that folder LW will download and store the files you select. And within that list of files you can select any number of files that you do not want to share.

However, if you move a file (or files) to a non-shared folder LW will not share those files regardless of whether the "shared attribute" has been turned off or on. So to share those files the folder/directory that they are in must first be "Shared".

Now, you can share any number of files as long as the folder (or folders) that they are in are Shared.

Finally, LW can only browse shared files in shared folders/directories and, of course, you can have any number Shared Folders

At this point, I would like to ask any forum member if their interpretation of "shared files and folders" differ from mine and to reply accordingly.

PS. Please note that my post refers to using LW on a PC with a windows O/S.

Thankyou all, especially ukbobby, who has articulated very clearly what I was trying to get at, I'd often wondered ,before asking this question, why I could be downloading a file from a host, and the file I was downloading didn't appear on the 'Browse' list for that host, so where was it coming from? As above it isnt in the 'Library' (Muhctekdano)It should be?
I then worried that any fully downloaded file would be shared automatically if the 'unshared' button was ticked, which then led me to wonder if any uploads were going on that I couldnt see, ie I could download files that I couldnt see from others? so were they also uploading from me? and so on etc..
It's still an open question, and ukbobby has got the closest yet, interesting.
Thankyou,
N2

Either I misinterpretted this or you did. I thought the original question was whether downloading into an unshared folder whilst having above option ticked would have the downloaded file shared. And unless there have been changes made to later versions of Limewire, they are shared. The folder won't be shared because of that, only the downloaded file.

Isn't this the option being discussed?

And of course, to expand on the individually shared files, you can right-click on any file in the Library window & choose either share or stop sharing. Same applies for folders if you wish to stop sharing a folder.

Point taken, I was unaware that this "sharing facility" was available in the latest version of LW.

Still, I am surprised that this has been incorporated because, and this is my first thoughts on it, it seems to add an extra layer of confusion and perhaps an element of danger, i.e. less secure. However, to those that want this facility it will add extra flexibility that can be used, for example, to sort files as the user's requires.

PS. I should now update my LW Pro.

Thankyou everyone on input,
So my other points,ie do files shared in unshared folders, show up on 'browse'
and do they show if 'uploaded' havn't been answered yet, and yes security was a factor in asking, as was genuine confusion.and as to extra flexibility, this is hardly 'Crystal clear' to anyone ,let alone the new user.and why cant you as LOTR suggests decide to 'Not share' in the library, they dont SHOW in the library???If I understand this, once you have ticked the box,all downloads are shared, whichever folder they are in? as they dont 'Show' a lot of people will not realise what they are sharing?Hence my other unanswered questions.

I split up your post and answered, but I think you are seriously overthinking things.

YOU CAN

they dont SHOW in the library???
THE DO UNDER INDUVIDUALLY SHARED FILES

THEY SHOULD BECAUSE THEY SHOW

Hence my other unanswered questions

Brilliant, thankyou sleepless, once ive got hold of the wrong end of the stick, i can continue not understanding for AGES !! so if i havnt ticked the box, files in my individually shared arnt shared, correct?
Im sure im not the only one who has been slightly confused over this,(ts not overthinking its confused thinking because of lack of info.)I just wanted to be sure that I wasnt sharing all my downloads without my permission, because id ticked that box.
or maybe(Blow to my ego) I am the only one !
Many thanks to all for clearing this up,
Still, Newbee2

Just remembered, so how come you can download a file from a host that doesnt show in the browse window? often ive browsed a host because a download has started, only to find that the file i'm downloading does not appear in hosts lists?
this was one of the reasons for wanting this cleared up.
Thankyou again for help, much appreciated.

Sleepless March 1st, 2007 11:33 PM

Most common reason would be that the host doesn't have the complete file. i.e. Has partial sharing turned on.

I would also like to thank you for clearing up my misunderstanding as well, coz' even us oldies still have things to learn about LW.
