Sending a file directly to another computer
 

I want to send a file that's too big for email to a friend; or have them download the file from my computer using LimeWire Basic. We tried the Direct connection button at the bottom of the search column.

We both have the message that we're behind a firewall or a router. MY firewall is disabled. I had to to get the new router to function. I'm using just the router firewall now.

Is there a way for a direct file transfer for us to use?

You will both need to get rid of that firewall to be able to direct connect to each other...I know that you have allowed limewire as an exeption, but the firewall that is blocking you would be a NAT Firewall which is built into your Modem/Router...

Any way just to be sure this is the problem could you post these details please...You may also want to get your friend to do the same...

11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up. ~~ Basic Network through the router; total of three computers wired to the router; one laptop wireless
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. ~~ I had LiveWire before with a different router and modem. It worked fine, HOWEVER I NEVER TRIED TO GO DIRECT IP TO IP WITH IT. With this current setup I can search and download files apparently okay. I just can't attach via IP address to my friend's computer or vice versa. Theirs says the same thing about a firewall.

Okay. I've been to PortForward and I've run the directions for setting up a Static IP address on this computer. I then set up the DLink DI-624 router to allow LimeWire to access port 35000. I changed it in LimeWire and saved it. And I've done this twice, actually.

I unplugged both the DSL modem and the router and reset them both. I've shut down this computer and restarted. I restarted the modem and router with the computer OFF, let them completely boot back up and then started this computer.

I'm at a loss. This shouldn't be this difficult. I just want to share a couple of large files with a friend. I thought this would be easy. I even had them search using the exact file name hoping LimeWire would find my file and upload it for them to download. No such luck.

Any more help would be ideal. Your suggestions to this point have been very helpful and educational and I appreciate it. A LOT. Us ignorant computer users ought to be banned from using computers ~~ but then, who would buy them if not us illiterates??? LOL

A side question, I have three other computers on this "network" in the house. Now that this computer is a static IP, do I need to assign all the others a static IP, too so they don't eventually conflict???

One side comment, too: Having assigned a Static IP to this computer, I could be dreaming, but my internet pages SEEM to load faster now; like it really is accessing this new Higher Speed DSL I'm paying for. Am I imagining this or could it be faster now?

I would suggest you use Winzip to compress your file into a mnagable size, failing that you can use winzip to cut your large file into any number of smaller compressed files that your friend will put back together on delivery.

I'm also curious to whether the static IP number is only 1 digit different to your ISP's number...

I ask this because I port forwarded for a friend the other day and the static IP the instructions gave me didn't work, but if i entered the ISP's IP it worked...go figure, I'm at a loss of why that happened...lol

Okay. Is the ISP's IP # the DNS numbers from D-Link? There are two of them. One is the one I log into the web setup for D-Link and the other, quite different in series, is the ISP IP??


I GUESS I ought to mention that I had an OLD Qwest DSL modem and this
"newer" D-Link router. They worked fine together. THEN, I upgraded my DSL to a faster connection and bought this new Qwest, ActionTec GT701. When I first switched out the modems, I could no longer see my network. The tech guys told me the router thought the MODEM had router capabilities and it was confused. The MODEM is NOT a modem/router; JUST a modem. So they had me adjust the IP settings in the D-Link web setup, turn off my XP Firewall and disable my McAfee Firewall and use only the NAT firewall. So this configuration I'm using is a modified configuration from the original that the D-Link set up by default. WHEW! How's that for long-winded. NOW do you guys have any more ideas???

Oh dear you have lost me know lol...

The DNS numbers aren't the ISP's IP, give them a call and get their IP number from them....
The Router login is similar, but not always the same (I think lol)

Once you have that number, delete the configuration you set up in port forwarding the router and just put the original IP number (the one your isp give's you) in where the static IP number should go....It may work, it may not...

With your actiontec, does it have a letter after GT701.

I downloaded Pando and it seems to work just fine for the file transfer that I needed to do. So I guess I've achieved what I need as far as file sharing.

I asked another question that I think got lost in the shuffle but may turn out to be important.

Now that I have a Static IP on this computer, do I need to create Static IP's on the other two that are hardwired to the router and the one that accesses it wirelessly? If I don't make them all Static, will they eventually be assigned the same IP and stop communicating???

That, I think, is the end of my questions for now.

The best thing is to give them static IPs. I have run into trouble with this before, because if you turn on the other computers before the one with the static IP, one of them might get the same IP as the static one is supposed to get.

Regarding the other thing, I really don't know why it wouldn't work to portforward. It is usually because of user error, but modem-->router-->PCs setups can be tricky at times.

And finally yes, your internet will load faster, not because of the static IP itself, but because of the other info you add as well saving the PC-->Router-->PC messages that would otherwise occur
