basic stuff

Hello.

I learned of LimeWire from my teenage son, who heard about it from a friend.
I downloaded and installed it, and it worked fine. I downloaded a few songs, just to try it. I haven't tried to burn a cd yet, but I will.

I have a few basic questions and, yes, I did try the FAQ and User Guide, but could not find these topics.

1. While I understand the concept of file sharing, I'm leery of allowing strangers into my computer. I don't pick up hitchhikers and I don't allow strangers into my home. Isn't this the same thing? Can people only take things that I permit? Or can they look at everything? Do I have to permit at all? I'm a writer and have things on my computer that are not for public consumption yet. Can people take things I'm working on?

2. I've read about the copyright controversy. Has that all been sorted out?
It is legal to download music, send it to an mp3, or burn a cd, as long as it's only for personal use and I'm not selling it, right - like videotapiing a movie on TV? As a writer, I'm sensitive to those issues.

If I decide to continue with LimeWire, I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future but, for now, I'd appreciate help with these.

Thank you.

Go to your Library and then explore. It will take you to your shared folder. Thats what you are sharing. Also might want to load Peer Guardian. Just a suggestion. Hope that helps

Okay. Thanks.
The only things in that folder were music.
Does that mean that other people can get to that folder and copy what's in it?
Is that how it works?
Does that mean that they can't get to the rest of my files?
I know this sounds dumb, but I'm new to it.
Thanks again.

Yes, as long as you have configured your settings right. Click Monitor and if you see any action, then other hosts are uploading from you. Also I would suggest taking some time to read the Stickies on this forum because it is loaded with very valuable info to assure a good experiance. There are tons of corrupt files out there in addition to the worms and viruses. So make sure your AV is updated and scan all files before you open them if possible.

Hi Patio. Here is how LimeWire works.

1. You download something.
2. When it's finished it's in your library.(The place with all the files you downloaded.)
3. If someone wants a file you have they search for it like you did to get it in the first place. And they can download it from you or from someone else.

So basically no one is snooping in your computer. The only thing they see is the files you got on LimeWire. I hope this helps you. :xeri_ok1ani:
